When I was in India, almost all the guys I worked with had them and they are great, sanitary, easy to clean and simple. I like them.

my 2 cents here:
The points about usage are key. You have to start with what you will use it for. Since I dont really go into combat or those types of situations, and mostly shoot at targets, its hard for me to think of this subject except as a civilian that knows what looks and feels good.
Its a hard choice for me honestly. I think if I had to pick one gun, I would pick the AR on looks and versitility mostly and how tricked out I have my M4
Benefits of the AK are great. It is to me ugly looking, but it is easy to keep working and is reliable and accurate more than most give credit for. Its cheaper to get ammo for as the foreign 7.62 availability is still pretty strong. Its versatile and comes in several models and calibers depending on if you go 47 or 74. Reliability is really good with these guns clean or not. Penetration on this weapon is good for many surfaces as mentioned above. Its easy to work on in the field without many tools.
The best looking rifle in my collection by far is my ar-15 which I converted to an M4 style tactical rifle. It easy to operate and handle with good stopping power and also a great gun. It is my favorite looking gun, and milspec makes it really easy to get aftermarket parts, swap it out and make it into whatever kind of weapon you like. The AR-10 in .308 winchester is a great platform for a sniper rifle and I cant think of a more versitile platform than ARs in general. You can swap uppers on a AR and shoot .22, 223, and many other varities on the same lower. The world is your oyster with this gun, but keep that bolt clean and use good brass ammo or prepare for failures due to fouling and replacing extractors. You have to carry a bit more toolage to deal with this in the field. But the attachments you can put on an AR and some of the triggers make it so fun and easy to shoot.

New Saigas are not like other shotguns. There can be lots of possible causes here. Before you buy anything, try to do some reading here. Use some slugs, like wolf or other high power russian ammo and run at least 100 rounds through it. Its going to cost you a bit of cash to do this. Try a combo of mags as suggested already, dont load them fully. Failure to eject could be the bolt, and here is a good article from the forum on polishing the bolt. I wrote up an article on conversion and all the fixes I found here and you can try that too for info. Good luck, you will enjoy this gun a lot once you get it reliable.

+1 on the trigger spring slipping into the trigger group. It happend to me this weekend a long while after my conversion. Do what Corbin said benging the tips a bit, it fixed mine. If you cant get it right with the bend tricl, +1 on the Carolina Shooters 25% reduced power main spring as your for sure fix.

Since you are gonna be in Trukee, so close to NV, why not just camp in NV instead? If you really want to go to all the trouble, mail your guns to yourself at a NV address and pick them up on the way to the campsite so you don't have them with you on the CA side. Lots of effort, but CA is not going to consider you legal with any AR variant.
Or you could switch weapons and bring something like a Rem 870 instead and a 10 cap mag or less on the pistol and you will be good. Its a bummer the laws are strict there and you wont be able to get through legally.

If you can weld the nut down so you dont have to retighten. At a miniimum get the purple loc tite and apply liberally so you wont have to screw them back in all the time as shooting this gun tends to rattle them loose very easily, especially with slugs.

On a side note, what is the impact of leaving lead like this in the barrel? Does it do any harm in the long run if you clean with solvent but dont get it all out each time?

I like um cause they are three pieces per rail so if you have an accessory in the middle you can easily put one in front and one behind.

With all the knowledge people who frequent this site have, I was wondering if anyone has seen a banana clip for this older 22lr rifle. I can only seem to find 10 rounders. Let me know if you have seen anything larger and where. Thanks!

A lot of that is going on right now. Make sure you scan your computer for trojans and key stroke loggers. My wifes account was hacked recently and they were using her hot mail to send spam and maxed out her cc.

I used the tromix trigger guard and its really a time saver. Id say it saved me an hour vs reworking the factory guard. I recommend if you can to weld it to the chassis, or weld the nuts down so you dont have to tighten it often. If you just use locktite and the provided screws, it will loosen after shooting slugs in particular as these guns do have a lot of force and tend to shake themselves loose.
One last piece of advice, on the bolt you use to hold in the pistol grip in place, make sure its not too long. If it is, when you tighten it down, it will dimple the flat side of the guard that sits flush with the gun chassis. That puts stress on the weld or bolt and it will break the provided screws.

You may need to break in the gun with slugs. There may be more mods necessary than just the gas plug depending on what you have.
