  1. Thanks for being so honest with me, Arik.

You're just confirming what I decided late last night after a very knowledgable guy on the akfiles gave me the run-down of everything he thought I should do if I wanted to do anything... going to extraordinary lengths to make her look Russian rather than Bulgarian.

What I realized is.. she is Bulgarian, and pretty fucking sweet as is. I decided that I should just leave her be and appreciate her "Bulgarianness" rather than trying to maker her into something she's not.

It also didn't help that I had a line on a primo matching Russian furniture set for less than $200, then the same knowledgable guy I mentioned took it upon himself to appraise that set, (the potential seller had put a pic into the general thread), at $300-$400.

It seems that decently priced good AK type 3 furniture is entirely too rare, unless you want to pay rusmilitary prices for a set you've never seen which may have issues, (repairs etc). I'd still like to pick up a set at some point, but until I find a deal that I don't feel I'm getting raped on, I'll stick with blonde.

  2. get some red laminate wood, polish the bolt, have the whole thing blued and have the selector markings fixed

I'll probably skip the bluing and new selector marks. I'm not trying for that level of authenticity, (imo the marks are pointless unless it's a display piece only, and bluing is inferior to park n paint).

I have located a new set of unissued Russian type 3 furniture, but the owner's not sure if he wants to part with it for anything other than the blonde set I've got now. If I can buy it from him, I probably will, but I want to keep the blonde set in reserve.

  3. well fuck it. since your already swapping out the FSB, that will possibly drop the resale as it is. so fuck it. polish that bolt and make it truly your rifle. and put that red wood on it. either way, its going to be sexy, so its an easy win-win.

if he does a good job on the fsb i highly doubt it will hurt the resale, if anything it will increase it

i agree hammer, but theres always the assholes that wont pay what something is worth if it does not have the factory original parts. me, i would consider this as an upgrade if anything.

Capt; you do realize that I'm replacing the "ban style" "de-fanged" Bulgarian fsb with one that's identical except for the unmolested "fangs", (used to secure a bayo on a 47 type 3), right?

The work will be done exceptionally well, and the new fsb is just that.. a new part. I think a "de-banned" SA M-7 C will sell for a bit more than one that's remained "ban style".

Regardless, I'm having it replaced just because it bugs me that I can't secure a bayo quite as securely without the "fangs"... not that it'll ever really matter... at least I hope it doesn't, cause if it's "fix bayonets" time, I'm likely fucked either way. biggrin.png

  4. Hello all,

I recently acquired a SA M-7 Classic, as detailed in my other recent thread. Here're a few current, (and possible "before"), pics:

    primosam77.jpg

    primosam73.jpg

    1000555t.jpg

Now, what I'm thinking of doing is having the bolt carrier polished while she's at the 'smith having the fsb replaced with one that has bayo "fangs".. so that it'd look something like this:

    ak47type31.jpg

    ak47type34.jpg

Then, I'm considering a furniture change to something like that on the above rifle as well, for better contrast with the polished bolt carrier and to better resemble a Russkie type 3.

There's some great stuff available at rusmilitary.com.. but it sure as hell ain't cheap. Anyone else have a line on 2-tang AK-47, (not AKM), red/reddish-brown wooden furniture, (besides Ironwood)?

Please vote and also provide your thoughts on my idea/s. Polished bc with Russkie-lookin wood? Polished bc with current blonde wood? Or.. should I leave it the hell alone?

I know it'll probably slightly drop the re-sale value, but I don't really care. The bolt carrier could be re-parked so I'm not making any permanent alterations. Besides, I don't plan to part with this rifle.

  5. Damn, I hope that poor guy that sold this rifle to you doesn't go pricing them. Between GunsAmerica.com and GunBroker.com there's one for sale. It can be had for $1,700.00

Or, you can buy one from Atlantic for ~$1,989. :D

Don't feel too badly for "that poor guy"; he's the one who set the price and I agreed to pay it.. didn't haggle or nothin. ;)

  6. you should get some IWD laminate and finish it in russian red....

I've considered that. If I did so, it would be as much to preserve the original blonde furniture as anything, because I do love the blonde look. I might also strategically stress the finish to give it that BFPU character to go along with the brown/red furniture.

I still haven't fired her... bout 95% sure I'll do so tomorrow. I don't think I can let her remain a safe queen, when she's likely the most accurate 7.62x39 AK I own.

  7. I'm sorry, but a 2" group at 100m is pitiful for the capabilities of a .308 (a "proper" .308 could do that at 500m). An AR in 5.56 can achieve that. I'm not condemning the use of 308 in a Saiga, I'm merely stating that the AK platform is not capable of utilizing the 308's capabilities. It's just my opinion, but I feel it's a waste. There are exceptions to every rule (as some AK's are more accurate than others), but as a general rule:

    A) you don't try to turn a shotgun into a rifle (I'm a 12ga fanatic and I see it all the time. Guys keep talking about slug accuracy)

cool.png you don't try to turn a carbine (ex: AK) into a MOA shooter (long range rifle)

It's common sense. Every tool has it's applicable use. Sure, it's ok to try to try to extend that use, so as to not have to use as many "tools", but it is NOT reccomended to suggest "improvising" one tool when one is already designed for it.

Bottom line: the AK is NOT designed for long range accuracy, so why try to make it such? I love the AK platform, it's simple, effective, reliable, etc... but it is what it is and has it's limitations. Let's not get all crazy and try to turn it into something it's not.

Are you under the misapprehension that typing in all bold somehow makes your opinion more valid? That shit's one step away from posting in all caps. rolleyes.gif

Please show us your 2" @ 500 yrd groups, shot with the .308 of your choice.

  8. .223 and 7.62x39 Russian steel case are about the same cost. The .223 has the advantage of lower recoil, less weight, and more bullet variety. The 7.62x39 has the advantage of greater target penetration and better magazine availability. Out of a 16 inch barrel the practical range of both is going to be about the same and as about as far as you can see your target without a high powered optic. 16 inch budget ARs don't shoot cheap .223 any more accurately than an AK. High dollar, 20 inch bull barrel ARs shooting match ammo will out shoot a 16 inch AK shooting Russian steal case. If you want a match rifle in are in the wrong place. Both rounds kill live targets equally dead. I have AKs in both, like both, and would have no issue relying on either.

The .308 AK is a bad**s machine. Izhmash states it is the most accurate AK variant it has produced. I don't know where you got your mis-info that the AK isn't intended for .308. PSLs and SVD AK variants have been shooting full 30 cal. rounds for decades. The 22" .308 Saiga will throw 30 cal lead into a two inch hole if you set it up right and do your part. It is a heavy son-of-***** though. The magazine selection isn't that great. 20 rounders are a bit much - long and heavy. The 8 round factory mags are descent but nobody sells them. What it needs is descent 10 rounders like those for the PSL and Tiger. But those don't exist, or I haven't found them.

5.45 - I don't have an AK74 can't comment. Will probably pick one up at some point I'm sure. 5.45 has some ballistic advantages over the .223/5.56. It's a brilliant round. But not nearly as widely available in the US as the .223/5.56. Other than the AK74 variants there are no other firearms in the US which use it, at least not to my knowledge. Whereas in .223/5.56 you numerous offerings, and even in 7.62x39 there are some bolt guns, ARs and the SKS among probably others which use it.

The 308 AK is accurate compared to WHAT? I'd pit my M70 Winchester bolt action against a 308 AK ANYDAY. Please. The 308 is a fantastic round, has great range/power, etc... but is is best used in a pricision weapon (which the AK is NOT). So, you have an AK in 308 with limited mag capacity, heavy rounds which are bulky (so you're not carrying many), and for what?... mediocre accuracy? No thanks.

It is true that 308 is the round of choice for snipers (for good reason. It reaches out and HARD). Do you see any AK sniper rifles? I don't. I see M70's, 700's, Barrets (although they're known for the .50), etc.

A 308 AK is more of a "it MIGHT/COULD" (in 308) than "WILL" of a proper firearm meant to fire it (such as those mentioned).

When you have an AK, it's time to stop dreaming and come to grips with reality. It's a short(ish) range weapon that's reliable, robust, and can take abuse. Nothing more, nothing less. If 300m or less is your game (seriously, w/o optics... that's a stretch in itself) then the AK will serve you well in 223 or 7.62. Forget the 308.

    Wow. Where's the -1 button?!

You might try actually firing a nicely converted S-308 before you damn them.

  9. Holy crap. You freaking stole that thing!

Just makes me wonder if it was stolen.

Nah, the seller just bought it several years ago, (before they'd appreciated in value so much), and priced it for around what he paid back then.

He didn't bother to see what her current market value was before offering her for sale; and I was glad to meet his asking price, before I'd even seen pics, (couldn't wait on this one). Carpe armorum! biggrin.png

  10. You guys need to stop, I mean it. If you get a great deal and have "Deal-Wood" and an overall feeling that life is great, I'm very happy for you. Just don't talk about it and post beautiful photos of beautiful weapons, please. I'm very impressionable. I found myself shopping AES10s earlier today and I have an unfinished S-12, a MAK90 I've been working on all day and a Sig P220 22LR on the way.

I simply cannot afford anything else!!! cry.gif

But if you look around yourself and realize you can't afford that new rifle, pm me. I might be able to help find someone to take it off your hands, eh hem.

    Now, WHERE'S THAT DAMN E-CLIP???

Haha.. thanks for the offer, Squishy, but if I were desperate for $; I'd sell all my furniture, my electronics, my tools, my blood n semen, and all my other guns before I parted with the SA M-7. ;)

Yeah, my "deal-wood" has lasted about ~72 hrs now. :D

    On a side-note; don't use e-clips, use hitch-pins.

  11. One of the sweetest AKs ever right there.

I'm jealous.... although still glad you saw it first and bought it, otherwise I'd be another $850 in the hole.

Now PA..... I thought you were telling me that the thin receiver SGL is superior to thick and milled receiver AKs because it's so much lighter.

And yet now you trade off the SGL for a milled gun. what.gifhaha.gif j/k ...... nice score!

    Thanks, Spartacus.

If I had to carry it slung all day, every day, I'd still prefer a SGL21 to the SA M-7.

I did sell one to fund the Classic, but I've got more. ;)

It'll be interesting to shoot em side-by-side and compare their accuracy. I expect the SA M-7 to be more accurate.. but by how much remains to be seen.

  12. Wow, you scored. $800 is a steal. Congrats

    Thank you, sir.

Nice rifle and nice score! You never know when a deal will show up in the classifieds. It makes the internet dangerous for your wallet!

Haha.. you ain't kiddin. For this price, I committed to buying it, (had to get first dibs), before I'd figured out how to best absorb the cost.

I ended up selling one of my SGL Saigas locally to cover it, so it was almost like a trade, one I did pretty well on.

  13. So, one fine night just over a week ago, I was still up and crusing the forums at ~3am. That's when I saw a new ad: "Arsenal SA M-7 for sale". I figured I surely couldn't afford it, but I've wanted one for years. So, I went ahead and read the details of the ad.

Lo and behold, the seller was advertising an unfired, (since the factory test rnds), SA M-7 Classic, (semi-auto AK-47 type III), with an asking price of.... $850 + shipping.

No one had replied yet, but this was on the akfiles marketplace, which is heavily trafficked, so I knew I didn't have much time. I posted "I'll take it." before even seeing any pics, and luckily, the rifle is as-advertised, in brand-new condition. The barrel doesn't even yet have any fouling, chrome is nice and shiny even at the bore.

I picked her up yesterday from my FFL. Here she is...

This rifle is also from early in one of the few production runs Arsenal has ever offered on this model. SN is AC 02 00XX. I'm very happy with my purchase. It'll almost be a shame to shoot her... almost. 000.gif
