  1. Almost sounds like he was trying to insert the axis pins AFTER the retainer was in.

    Installation should go:

Insert hammer, insert BHO, insert trigger, insert axis pins, flip spring legs up, insert retainer, insert safety lever. Or something along those lines. The last 2 steps are definitely the last 2 steps.

I was... because I couldn't get the damned safety in with the BHO in position.... only with it out of the retaining pin. When I got my replacement plate, I took some material off the top of the BHO and the safety and had no problems. I was hoping not to have to do that but its the way it had to be.

  2. I need to get a 2 round mag and I see that I can either get a Russian magazine for $80 or the Surefire for $35. It seems like a no brainer as I can get 2 surefires for the price of the Izhmash but I will need to fire 3" turkey rounds and 3" slugs with this magazine. Just wondering if the Russian mag is worth it or if the Sure fire will hold up under the 3" recoil.

I just bought the surefire 2 round mag and its the sturdiest mag I own. The material seems very thick and it looks very clean when inserted into the gun. I cant really say anything about the factory 2 round. I have never seen one.

  3. Im bumping this because I just finished my conversion and wanted to say/identify a few things as a noob who did the deed.

    1. Drilling the holes is a pain in the butt, but again, if you have the right tools i.e., a good drill, dinzags carbide drills and a good tabletop vice grip, its not that bad.

    2. Skip the dremel and go to the grinder to get the plate off... if you have a steady hand, this is the way to go. If you dont, use the dremel and put on a pot of coffee.

    3. Pry the trigger guard plate off by bending back the trigger guard and using it a handle for leverage.. wiggle it every which way and it will give. Skip the screwdriver, its scarey.

    4. Drill the middle of the rivets you grinded/dremeled off a little at a time, give it a couple of punches, if it does not go, drill it a little more. You dont want to mess those holes up.

    5. The BBQ grill spray-paint I heard about isn't a match but it looks like its going to hold up well. It dries fast and I found some other uses for it after the conversion was done.

    6. The video from carolina shooter supply is the best thing to do the remainder of the project IMHO. Follow exactly what he says and you will make less mistakes.

    7. In order to get the BHO spring in place I recommend a pair of small hemostats. You can buy them at a medical supply store of Harbor freight tools... an indispensable tool.

    8. Even if you grind down the safety like the video states, you may still need to grind off the area of the BHO that comes in contact with the area where you insert the safety lever.

    9. Dont be afraid to start over. I dont care how hard you thought it was to get the BHO spring under the pin. Sometimes you have to remove everything and try again!

    10. There is no substitute for the proper tool. Cut your losses and go to the store to buy what you need. Punches, hemostats drill bits etc.

    11. When you are done there are no words for how proud you will be, how knowledgeable and how much this adventure will make it your favorite gun you own.

    Thanks guys.

  4. The hammer and trigger pins have a slot in them right alongside the inside wall of the receiver. There is supposed to be a wire retaining spring there locking into those grooves to keep them from walking out.

Ok. I have a retaining plate, but it was partly blocking the hole... and so I dremeled it out...

... so I take it that the real answer is I need a replacement... because I screwed up. I was bound to make a mistake.

It's supposed to partially block the hole, that's how it retains the axles in place. You fit the pins in ALL the way, then slide the retainer into the channel of the hammer axle, then down into the channel of the trigger axle, then push the safety through the solid hole in the back of the retainer.

At least it was only a $10 mistake.

You're right. Could have been worse. Im juat glad that I dont have to take the whole thing apart again to fix it... although I am getting very proficient at that. :P

  6. I just finished my PGC on my saiga 12. Waiting for the stock and grip now. Everything else is done. However, I am having a problem that my pin holding the hammer in place rides out slowly shot after shot. Has anyone encountered this problem? I looked in the archives and came up empty handed. Did I make a mistake somewhere along the way in my conversion?

  7. That's not really a brake. Notice the slots on the bottom of the hider? That means gases are released in a circle, for a net ZERO reduction in muzzle climb etc. For a real brake, You have to look for top ports and side baffles IMO. But even then, the pressure behind a 12ga shotgun is so small compared to a rifle, that you don't get the same effect from the brake... at least that's what I hear.

Yep, pfmedic's got a flash-hider there, not a real muzzle brake. I haven't decided whether to get a muzzle brake or a poly-choke yet, (leaning toward the choke), but for the OP, here are a couple brakes that look like they might actually reduce felt recoil and aren't too expensive, (specifically the SGM brakes at the bottom of the page).

Didn't know that... but it looks good and like you guys said I dont really feel like the recoil on the gun is bad at all. My remington sportsman 48... now thats an unbearable amount of recoil.

  8. I'm thinking of putting a brake on my new S12 but there seems to be quite the selection for the Saiga 12s, unlike the .308. So I'm having some trouble picking one out. I'm liking the Tromix competition brake but what are some recommendations you guys might have. Also would I have to use a barrel nut for proper orientation? Chaos has restocked their brakes recently so I'll be checking those out as well. I'll probably put in an order for one at the end of the week so any input is welcome.

I prefer something more reserved rather than something very outlandish, but I do feel that your brake should say "I mean business." However. its really all up to you. I chose this model which you can purchase from mississippi auto arms.

  9. The 10-12 round drum is the best. I honestly dont like how long the traditional style 10 and 12 round mags hang off the gun. I need something more compact that holds at least ten rounds. Your compact drum is definately something I will purchase when you finish the product.

  10. I wanted to order a black stock set... just the handle and the buttstock... preferably warsaw length (AK-008BUSW). Any ideas why everyone is sold out? Emailed K-VAR with no response.. been a few days. Should I just order the whole 4-piece set from Danzig and pay more?

  11. how were you trying to put the handguard on?

...are they tight and thats why they don't fit or are they not locking in place?

The handguard bracket is where the trouble lies. I did crack a little composite off the unit when I attempted to put it on the opposite way... becuase its simply wont go on the other way. The good news is that its on the inside so you cant see and it doesnt effect the fit. The bracket however does. I shaved it down and it fits but looks sloppy. I ordered another and i will send it to a smith.

Anyway The agp magazine wont lock in place.
