  1.

Red:> How did you match the OD mag color, or are the Bulgarians making green 74 mags???

    Also, awsome rifle!

K-VAR had OD green AK-74 mags a long time ago when they first introduced OD green furniture. They are almost impossible to find now though. At any rate, I bought some way back then. I really like the look.

  2. The SGL is built from better parts than the SAR, and also the SAR parts are often used and/or rejected.

On a side note, the SGL-31 has the correct AK-74 front trunion, whereas a SAIGA 5,45 has a wide cut trunion to acomodate for the built in bullet guide the 5,45 saiga mag has. You can test this theory out yourelf; note that the 5,45 saiga will take AK-74 mags without any modificaton - however, a 5,45 SAIGA mag will NOT fit into a standard AK-74 of any contry variety. The Dfferance? the cut for the trunion. Also, as you said, the true Russian parts and collector value are something to consider.

Want to see some pics of mine? I put OD green furniture, and had Red Jacket Firearms install a folding trunion and Triangle folder on it, and while they had it refinish it in gunkote. Add my Sound Suppressor ["silencer"] and my Kobra red dot sight [an actual Russian Kobra, not the copy], and you've got a hell of a neat package!

  3. I dont like Paypal but i use it.There policys pretty much suck.I sold a Flashlight awhile back and had a "Buy it now" option.20 minutes after the the end of the auction the buyer emailed me that he misread the description and asked if he could cancel the deal,i said no problem and went thru the proper steps to not get charged the final value fees,i refunded his money a couple hours later then relisted the item and every thing seemed fine.2 weeks later i get a email saying the buyer opened a dispute that he never received his item, so they froze the amount in my Paypal account..i couldnt assess it until the dispute was resolved, all the proof of refund was sent that same day,it was all right there but the buyer and Paypal both dragged there feet for as long as they could according to there policy of handling disputes..Long story short, over a month later i got my funds back, after the claim being under "investigation by Paypal" for weeks i finaly had to call them and bitch out some young kid to get them to get off there azz and do something

So... all that BS and you STILL use it? Switch to Google or gearpay man!

  4. I've shot nothing but 5.56 out of mine, and it launches brass into low orbit.

I'm just trying to think of a way to make the ejection alittle less violent... I wanna reload my brass and I can't find most of it since it launches it into the next county.

    Any ideas?

I don't bother - with the indentation around the primer and the horrible crease I get in the side of the case from ejection it;s totoally not worth reloading to me. As long as it isn;t causing jams I don't worry about it, but it is seriously funny.

When I say "low orbit" I mean low orbit - It's throwing my cases a good 25 yards at least, and it pitches at about a 60 degree angle forward and at about a 45 degree angle up... quite amazing.

  5. If the rifle can accept and use "non sporting" magazines, it can't be imported.

Are you telling me that Arsenal is now importing Saigas that are able to accept and use 30 round milsurps right out of the container (which they would with the referenced bullet guide).

They they are above the law, or have bribed someone?

The law is the law. How is Arsenal importing "non sporting" Saigas? If they are not held up by the import laws,, why aren't they importing rifles with side folding stocks on them, too?

OK, I'm calling BS. Big time. That is absolute, utter, ridiculus CRAP.

I can remember in the 80's when all teh egyptian guns were imported with lo-cap mags - 10 rounders to eb exact. And do you know what everyone did? they threw it away and promptly inserted a 30 rounder - with no mods at all! And do you know what happned when they later imported Yugo AK's? same thing. And again when they imported VAlmets from Finland? same thing.

And for the record, YES the 5,45 SAIGAS will accpt a standard 30 round mag right out of the box. If you buy the SAIGA version then you need ot install a bullet guide. If you buy the SGL then it is factory done IN RUSSIA. But if you don't belive us do your own reserach - call Arsenal yourself.

  6. The "modern Izhmash Kalashnikov" has had a side folding stock since the '80s. How long do we have to wait around for this fact to set in?

To be 100% correct, only the AKS-74, AK-74M, and AK-100 series all have factory folding stocks. The AKS-74 was produced WITH the standard AK-74 for quite some time. So ALL AK's having folding stocks wasn't true untill the introduction of the AK-74M, which replaced BOTH the AKS-74 and AK-74 in service.

Also, I have a 5,45 SGL as well, and I love it. I did send it out to have a triangle folder put on it though. Should have it back this coming week? can post pictures then.

  7. Does anyone know do the SAIGA factory mags have the metal reinforcement in the feedlips? Metal front and/or rear catch/lugs? Metal reinforcement down the front and/or back? A proper AK mags has all of these, but I am unsure if the SAIGA mag has any of hem. In such a short mag, they are probably not needed, but I'm just mildly curious if they are. I sold my only stock mag when I switched mags so I don't have one to cut up to find out or I would. Anyone got any info?

  8. I have n SGL-31. It is an amzing gun, and I've seen come "converted" 5.45 SAIGAS out there that I wouldnt touch for free - THere are some finer point sI'd like to amke though.

1). with the SGL, you're going to get the typical crappy paint finish. Expect it to rub/wash off. Some builders will use a muhc bettter finish, others will also use paint. so in this regard, a builders gun could be better

2). The Arsenal uses Bulgarian and Russian parts, along with the USA compliance parts. A builders gun will have to use the same compliance parts, but all other parts are up to thier discretion - there is a possibility that the builders gun could be worse depending upon what parts they use

3). The SGL-31 is fixed stock. period. A Builder cna make a folder for you, and for some this is a big deal. Again, quality of the folder can vary, depending upon the builder.

In Short, The SGL is a great rifle with a crappy finish and a fixed stock. A quality builder will build you a quality gun that is better than the SGL, no doubt. A crappy builder will ruin your gun and it won't be as nice as the SGL. So - if you want to convert a SAIGA then choose a good quality builder. Like all things in life 9 times out of 10 you get exactly what you pay for.

  9. no, of course

we WANT to hear what you think, red......thank you for sharing with us.

Mr Tom is a 4th generation gunsmith, however. You buy a TOOL from us, not a TOY.

what do you want behind your front door????

oh, I like the blue highlight like im some moron.....Ill remember that.......Gary....and as for the bullet guide, it has already been disgusted......

Mr Tom is the one that has to greet you and smile, not Mr Ben. I just get yelled at for it.....

    -Ben Vamp.

    PS - got saiga?

Thanks for your uderstanding, I appreciate it. It's nice to know some people can accept constructive critism with grace, and not take it personally.

Do you plan on doing any of these eith the front end converted? how much will those be? It's interesting that you are are basically down the road from me, unlike my other guy who is across the country.

  10. ....I'm not trying to be an asshat about it....

Naw. I think you missed the bullseye by a New York mile.

The way you stated your opinion concerning VanKiller's GB auction, clearly identified you as an ASSHAT. I believe you could have stated your opinion significantly differently.

    -_-

I started my opinion with "For $800 I think it needs at least some front end work done." I still stand by that opinion and I don't think it calls for being rude. But what can I say? I'm just no equel to such a class act as yourself sir. You show your colors high and true for all the world to see.

  11. For $800 I think it needs at least some front end work done. If the gun is $350, a tapco stock and FCG, and possible duracoat refinish doesn't justify $450 to me. Sorry to sound like I'm rainign on your parade, an dI'mnot trying to be an asshat about it. I'm just saying that I have already purchased 5,45 conversions that had both the front and rear cpnversions done and they were put in full military configuration [not tapco AR stocks] with a complete refinish and lifetime waranty for about $50 more than you're charging.
