  1. Yes - but unlike the old Soviet cars, the Trabant has become something of a cult status symbol in Germany. Old Trabants sell for many times their original purchase price. http://autos.trovit.de/autos/trabant-601-verkaufen Back to Izhmash claims to exclusivity... Perhaps the Russian should take the Colt 1911 design (no longer protected by patents) as an example and simply call it a day. Or even better yet - build a really good 1911 that retails for under $400, and simply capture a big chunk of the world market for 1911's. With regard to AR15/M16. Before the cold war ended, nothing w
  2. Perhaps after some investigation, the Russian journalists discovered that the AK design has no patent protection and has been copied and produced royalty free - all over the world - for decades. Perhaps they should investigate the Chinese, Egyptians, and Pakistanis as well. Under the Soviets, mother Russia looked down its nose at imperialist practices like patents, trademarks, and trade names. Does the expression - "a dollar short, and a day late" have an equivalent translation in Russian? Also, I have to laugh about the hand made nature of Russian guns. While it is true that no tw
  3. I know this thread was started some time ago - but watching the future weapons clip - the AA 12 is shown stripped of its plastic cladding. At its core it appears to be a gas operated weapon using the same basic system as the AK. Its full auto fire rate of 300 rounds per minute can be matched by the S12's semi auto fire rate of about 5 shells a second. If one were to weld the charging handle to the top of the S12 bolt carrier, and put the gun in a similar composite shell, you'd be really hard pressed to tell the difference between the twp. Having observed you tube video's demonstrating th
  4. Did you miss the part about "hand fitting"? How about the fact that the law that requires new US parts is stupid, and really doesn't do anything, anyway? Not true Nalioth, Everyone knows adding US parts turns off the baby-seeking-bullet feature of the AK. When it comes to a Saiga tactical build, it's unlikely that I have missed anything. And, I am certainly no stranger to hand fitting parts. Simply making the parts correctly from the outset would eliminate the need for 'hand fitting'. I recently fabricated a 'hybrid' FCG from US and Russian parts. The goal was to
  5. Tapcos are known for this. They do it on AKs, the do it on RPKs, they do it on Saigas. Don't baby your bolt carrier, but pull it back all the way and let it slam forward. I've never seen actual shooting interfered with by this. Shooting will ease the 'new' off of it. It's not a "half-cock" when the disconnector releases the hammer. It's a full cock. I'm a couple of years (give or take) late on this subject, but since no action has been taken by US manufacturers to remedy the situation - the subject remains timely. The difference you are perceiving in the disconnector functi
  6. The Official video from Izhmash claims the tactical version of the S12 will cycle just about anything. Unfortunately, no such claim (or any claim) is made for the "sporter" version. In my experience, there are two reasons for FTE problems with S12 conversions. (1) The Tapco and Tromix/Tapco versions of the FCG are not specifically made for efficient cycling in the S12. The Tromix version drops in nicely, but, like the unmodified Tapco FCG sits quite a bit higher (than the original Russian FCG) in the receiver creating resistance to efficient cycling as the bolt carrier has to work harder
  7. The problem may be with your 'bolt hold open'. In order to properly install the safety for correct operation you may have to cut out a large enough section of the 'bolt hold open' to allow the safety to operate within its full circumference of motion. I did this with mine, and it now works flawlessly, with the added advantage of being able to remove and install the saftey at any time for cleaning of the internals. This is not possible with the stock (unmodified) Saiga 12. When you are done the front of the bolt hold open should look something like this. Just be sure to leave enough metal
  8. Obviously, you have put a lot of work and money into it. It is clearly an intimidating tactical build. However if it doesn't cycle properly - you may have put the cart before the horse. Two things I would look at are friction in the bolt assembly/bolt carrier systems, and the efficacy of the gas system. With two only two gas ports you may not have enough gas driving the bolt back via the piston. Simply enlarging the existing gas ports is risky. It's easy to take metal away, but not so easy to put it back. So - why not take it to a gunsmith specializing in AK's? As a Saiga owner I exp
  9. Alternatively, the distributor, RAAC, occasionally gets spare parts from Russia for warranty work, they dont stock much normally, but its definately worth asking about. info@raacfirearms.com If i can ask, what is wrong with the bolt and extractor you have, or are you just looking for replacement parts? I am a commercial jeweler in the sense that I am in business, but my pieces are individually hand fabricated and hand finished which is less "commercial" than say, casting or die stamping jewelry pieces in quantity. The bolt is fine, but extractor was a bit sticky and interfered
