  1. how can they sell them, if they need the conversion?

Define need. It goes bang every time without any conversion. If you bought it for what it is, you'll be happy.

However, if you want high-capacity magazines or a proper pistol grip then you need to convert it. This means reducing the foreign part count to 10 out of a total of 14 legally defined parts - but magazines count as three parts and a fire control group is also three parts so it's actually very easy to get it down to 10 foreign legally defined parts. A pistol grip and a new stock are also one legal part each. If this is confusing, use this handy calculator.

How can they sell you a bastardized AK made to look like a hunting rifle? Because they have to. Why? Because somebody felt like passing a law solely to protect the American assault rifle industry from cheap foreign imports, that's why.

If you're scared of power tools then leave it as it is. Otherwise, order some conversion parts and some Surefire magazines and refinish with engine enamel and you'll get an awesome completely custom rifle.

  2. Rats, I got bamboozled by a zombie poll. That being said, steel 35-rounders will work in my rifle. At least half of them work all of the time, all of them work at least half the time. The ones that don't run 100% only fail when the bottom of the mag is pulled to its extreme leftward point of wobble.

Hmm. Well, I really want metal magazines and they're $12.99 a piece plus s&h - so I'll order twice as many as I really need and then see if the half that don't always work can be filed to work! :donatello:

Dinzag bullet guides work best? I've got a rifle that left the factory in September 2010 with a round trunnion, if that matters.

  3. Federal Powershok out of my SGL 21 with a 2.5-7 power scope and a bench

Interesting. I'd been told it's all the cheap imported ammo that gives the AK a bad reputation for accuracy and I guess that's true. I also think it's that most people don't bother to figure out how to scope their 7.62x39 Saigas/SGLs.

The bullet will always have the rainbow trajectory, but a fellow could overcome that with skill.

Most of the farmers around here kill the hell out of hogs with an SKS .... and that's likely with the cheapest ammo they can buy. I have no doubts a quality bullet would do great at moderate distances on deer and hogs.

How far is moderate? A 300 yard hog-destroying coyote-blasting AK would be the cat's pajamas. I bet the hard limiting factor will be the range at which the bullets just don't have the velocity to expand.

Doesnt wiggle. You can tighten up the folder button in the open or closed position. It's an HDPS all aluminum stock, with a steel and aluminum HDPS folding mechinism....looks a lot like an Ace....

Impressive, but HDPS is out of stock for almost everything on their website - including the hinges and stocks. They'll sell you a 2 1/2 ton military truck though

I think I'll go with an ACE folder.

  5. i like the red star arms trigger you can adjust them for single stage or double stage and adjust the trigger pull.

    & welcome to the forum

Never mind whether it's a good idea, but what modifications do you have to do to fit an RSA trigger into a .223 Saiga?

    A standard conversion will do.

    Thanks.

  7. ACE has some M4 and "SOCOM" style retractable AND side folding stocks that they say require no modification to the receiver. B)

Ugly, but I like the features list.

Has anyone held one of these things? My thinking is that it's worth the $165 if it doesn't wiggle. Wiggly stocks irritate me. I've had some bad experiences with "cool" stocks on other weapons that wound up lock-tited into one and only one position forever. Might as well get some nice dark red wooden furniture instead so at least it'll look right for an AK.

The important part isn't the retractability, although adjustable LOP would be nice. My eventual purchase has to fold and it has to not wiggle on me. If none of these will do it, then who knows what will?

  8. How long is a 16 inch Saiga 308 with a folding stock anyway? If it's close to the length of a Kel-Tec RFB when folded and 1/3 the cost then I might be sold. I think it would be neat to have a .308 that fits in a backpack when it's not needed, and that folds up so you can use it in tight spaces or dense brush if you have to.

Also, can you convert one yourself and just slap on any old AK folder? Even the underfolders?
