  1. I got mine a few weeks ago form Atlantic Firearms. Absolutely no problems, straight sights no cant. Awesome gun!

I refinished the wood with my (some what) historically correct “Russian Red” shellac finish. I applied one liberal coat of Minwax Mahogany Gel Stain #605 wiped it off, then I lightly sanded some of the stain off using 400 grit sandpaper. Let it dry 24 hours. I then applied 3 coats of Zinsser Bullseye amber shellac vary lightly sanding with 0000 steel wool between coats. Let the shellac dry completely for 3 days then apply wax to protect the shellac finish from water damage. Preparing the wood for the stain and finish is vary important. I used Acetone to degrease and clean, then I neutralized the acetone using mineral spirits. Acetone will not harm combloc laminate wood glue. Sand with 400 grit and 0000 steel wool before applying the stain.

  2. i think i'll be in to my gun about 700-750 by the time i get done with most of my conversion. That includes pistol grip, underfolder, ak mags, and wood hand guards. Then i'll still have to do the front site, gas block, bayo, cleaning rod and sling. Project is getting too expensive and it hasn't even started yet

Have you considered the EAA Zastava PAP for your Yugo under folder project? There are a few guys around that can do the mag well conversion to accept double stack mags for a small fee. The zastava factory is thee original factory in Yugoslavia/ Serbia that makes the original "Yugo under folder AK's" for the Yugoslavian military.

Factory built AK's are definitely worth the extra noise. Unlike USA builds they have things like cold hammer forged barrels and they are correctly assembled.

looking info up on them, the saiga seems like a better rifle.

Izhmash Saiga and Zastava PAP are top of the line AKs. Zastava goes the extra mile during manufacture utilizing a 1.6mm thick RPK heavy receiver and milled front sight base and milled gas block. Saiga has a cast FSB and GB, 1.0mm thick AKM receiver. If you plan to go the Yugo route then I definitely recommend the PAP.

  4. There are hundreds of different AK type rifles imported and sold in the united states from a wide range of countrys, 95% of these different AKs will be fitted with US made TAPCO or other US made triggers in order to meet the US 922R compliance and importation law for regulated foreign made long guns.

Note: the Saiga is an AK and is in fact thee original Russian AK, and sets the standard to which the quality of all AK clones are judged by in the US and throughout the world

  5. I want to change the gb and fsb also. I just dont know whats compatible with the saiga 762.

The Saiga rifle is essentially a neutered AK74. The barrel made for the 7.62x39 Saiga is the same barrel that is installed in the Russian military AK74. Any AK74 FSBs or gas blocks will fit your Saiga's barrel. That being said swapping a gas block only for the benefit of a GP30 lug is no easy task. GBs and FSBs have an extremely tight fit with the barrel, and the swap will require the use of a heavy shop press and you will need to figure out a way to properly support your receiver so you don’t bend your barrel under the stress (been there done that...) On the other hand changing a dimpled or pined FSB is a fairly easy task. No shop press needed, only a dremel tool with a cutting wheel, a mallet, punch, a drill, and proper barrel support. When using a surplus AK74 muzzle break you will need to use a drill bit to bore out a bigger hole to accommodate the 7.62 bullet as the break was intended for the 5.45x39mm round. "How to" guides can be found on this site by using the search feature.

  6. Parts that fit saiga:

-AKM47 or AK74 Gas tubes from East Germany , Russia, Bulgaria, Egypt, Romania, Chinese Type 56, Poland AKM47-- (Not tantal)

-AKM47 or AK74 Front hand guards upper & lower with Saiga hand guard retainer, from East Germany , Russia, Bulgaria, Egypt, Romania, Poland AKM47-- (Not tantal) (A well respected vendor here sells the Saiga hand guard retainer @ http://store.carolin...nd-guard/Detail )

-AK47 or AKM47 or AK74 Pistol grips from East Germany , Hungry, Russia, Bulgaria, Egypt, China, Romania, Poland AKM47 & tantal (the polish bakelite grip is vary nice)

-AKM47 or AK74 stamped receiver wood or poly buttsocks form East Germany , Russia, Bulgaria, Egypt, Romania, Poland AKM47-- (Not tantal) Hungry AMD 63 wood only

-AK74 Front sight bases from Bulgaria, East Germany, Russia

-AKM47 or AK74 Top dust covers from East Germany , Russia, Bulgaria, Egypt, Romania, Poland AKM47 &tantal, hungry AMD 63 & 65

-AKM47 or AK74 folding wire stocks from East Germany, Poland, Romania.

In my opinion the highest quality combloc AK parts come from East Germany then Bulgaria, Russia, Poland, Hungry, China, Egypt and Romania (from best to worst)

Parts that DO NOT fit the Saiga unless heavily modified are from the following rifles and countries:

-Any Yugoslavian AK M70B1 or M76 or M72 parts

-Any Polish Tantal AK74 parts except pistol grip, dust cover and 5.45 tantal mags do fit saiga

    -Most parts from RPK rifles

    -SVD or Romanian PSL parts

-Most milled receiver AK47 parts such as Hand guards & butstocks do not fit the saiga

(please note the AK47 & AKM47 are two different rifles. The AK47 has a milled receiver while the AKM47 has a stamped receiver and will resemble a rifle that looks identical to the Romanian WASR 10 or WASR 10/63.

-All CZ 58 Parts do not fit the Saiga

I am not familiar with Chinese parts hopefully some one weighs in on that

I Hope this list I made helps and members please point out errors if I made any and please add on

Here is a pic of my saigas just to give you an example of what you can do with surplus parts

  7. I have never questioned the color, creed, looks, class, gender or age of any person before going into a burning or collapsing building to rescue them,

Kudos to you. I'm just curious though, as a professional firefighter would it even be possible to decide not to go rescue someone for any of the above reasons? I mean, the on-scene command says go and you go, right? In my line of work we perform water rescues quite frequently and when I tell my crew to go, they go, despite any risk, because that is the job we are paid to do. The reason I'm asking is that the question in the OP seems to be related to situations where one is in a position to make a choice as to their level of involvement.

Thanks brother, Any thing is possible as long as your prepared for the consequences that follow. All Firefighters work as a structured team, and with any team there is a chain of command. If that command tells you to do some thing, it is your duty to do it. As a general rule, when performing a search and rescue it is procedure to have a back up rescue team to rescue the initial team if they get trapped or lost during operation. But this procedure can be void in extreme cases if you are the only rescue firefighter on scene, and you know some ones life is truly in danger. If you lower your level of involvement to 90% then the other members of the team are having to work at 110% to make up for you, and that will get you fired.

  8. I have never questioned the color, creed, looks, class, gender or age of any person before going into a burning or collapsing building to rescue them, I know for many folks I am the last hope they have. For most people material things make them feel happy, for me the satisfaction of helping others makes me feel happy, to me happiness is the most important thing in life, with out it Id rather be dead. And I rather die a hero searching for happiness than die being the man with the most.

Yugo AK lower work? is there a length difference or just the width issues from the bulged trunions?

As a general rule steer clear of any Yugoslav parts unless you have a yugo made rifle, the Yugoslavians make a totally different spec AK, SVD and RPK than any soviet country. There is always the exception that you can modify any stock set but personally I would not try this with yugo sets (pain in the ass), Ive seen a few pictures on the net of Romanian AES-10Bs with Russian/East German wood furniture front to back, and no talk of modifications

  10. Congratulations on your sweet buy

Stamped style RPKs (like Romys) take a but stock that appears as if you could mount it on a stamped AK74, But the square part that inserts into the receiver is slightly smaller on the RPK.

As far as I know the Romy is com block/mil spec with all other stamped RPKs East German, Russian Molot

  11. If it was a forgery I'd think the finish would have to be different. I've never seen a refinished Saiga who's finish wasn't obviously different from the Izhmash factory finish.

Yeah that was my first thought, it would not be an easy task to remove the importer's name and make it look good either. my 7.62 saiga was bought around 2000 and it has "Imported by EAA" stamped in the same spot as miamisaiga's rifle has the engraving. I wonder if this is the actual importers stamp. It could be the work of KALASHNIKOV-USA LTD INC?
