  1. I'm glad to see this topic is still running strong. I just saw a Saiga-9 on another website and made me think of this old post.

Still would like to see the saiga 9 imported like the standard import saiga. I would love to do a conversion on it.

I saw the VEPR as well. Kinda silly magazine design IMPO. Maybe a vityaz magazine conversion would be cool for one. Either way we need a 9mm AK imported to the US.

  2. I don't know if anyone knew this....

But I looked at one of will's (red jacket) classic style conversions. Which is very well done and had the holes welded and all the little bells and whistles on it. Then was lurking around Atlantic and saw another (red jacket) classic they were selling for the same price that was on the RJ website as the classic.

Something didn't look right when I saw the Atlantic red jacket classic. Tapco timbersmith stock set, no weld holes, yadda yadda. Then looked at will's red jacket classic. Two completely diffrent builds? Same price? Either wills work is diffrent or someone at atlantic was told they were getting a red jacket gun or something. But the one on Atlantics web page does not look anything like the Red Jacket build on their website. Are these real red jacket AK's?

Just look at the two and tell me there isn't a diffrence.

I'd like to see more bronze tho. My idea was to do some bronze plating to some of the AK parts. To give it that true steampunk look.

I struggled with the idea of giving it a subtle copper or bronze wash, but I just never worked up the nerve. There is still a lot that could be done if I wanted to go full Deiselpunk with it, but I'm not sure I want to commit to anything that is irreversible at this point. I also do occasionally shoot this gun, so it has to be completely functional. But probably most importantly, I collect original Soviet-form AKs, and as it is, with the Russian finish and laminated wood, this still fits in very nicely. Making it look like it was crafted in hammered copper and brass would definitely set it outside the rest of my collection.

I dunno though. Maybe there should be room for a removable finned dustcover for this gun, just for those days when I feel like I might be set upon by the fiendish clockwork automaton army of Lord Higgenbotham.

Yes, I understand your fighting the urge to do some plating.

Since saigas are at an all time low in price these days I may have to pick up another to add to the collection. Also to make a project/art gun.

Me and a friend of mine have been tinkering with the steampunk style ideas for some time. We are tring to figure out a design for a mosin 91/30 at the moment. Which will have some bronzing and aged bronze discolorating in it.

Again. Keep up the good work. And always function over form. Looking pretty is one thing. But being in working order is another.

Also, my x39 is going to have some things done to it to make it look older and more used. Since I havent done much to it. I will be adding wooden ak style furniture to give it that classic look. And lightly sanding all the edges to look worn. I hope it turns out like it looks in my head. :P

  4. I was thinking of taking my saiga x39 and going the steam punk route when I got it. Then started thinking about resale value and what not. I'm glad someone did. This gun looks very awesome indeed. I tip my hat to you sir.

Never the less keep up the good work. This gun is simple and beautiful. Not over complicated and just a plain work of art. Cheers!

  5. Tony, That was some funny shit. "one hand to hold the gun and the other to hold the beer!" But you underestimate the power of the redneck. :D

I can only hope the Akdal gets more popular. Maybe it will bring down the prices of Saiga 12's. The akdal is attractive. But it doesn't have a track record like the S12 does. It seems it's up to the aftermarket to make it that tacticool AR 12 gauge.

To say one is better than the other is up in the air at the moment. One of the reasons I haven't run out and bought an akdal. It's too early to tell.

I think more parts made for the akdal the better. I can't wait to see a new lower and handguard for it. A lower that would take all the AR goodies on the market like grips and stock tubes would be a real "winning factor" to the akdal. Because today it seems the more crap you can bolt on to the gun the more popular it is. Don't get me wrong. I love all the goodies we can stick on our guns. And I feel it boosts the free market. Who doesn't like options?

The biggest issue seems to be magazines. People want more than 5 rounds of bang bang. A drum or bigger stick mags will help it's sales as well.

For now Saiga wins. It has more aftermarket parts and it's been proven. Till we see a true side by side fully modded Akdal Vs. S12 run and gun shoot off. There wont be a clear winner, or draw, or whatever.

  6. With the right guys wanting one it can be built. Here it a 7.62X25 built by Erie Ordance Depot it uses PPSH mags and barrel and is blowback operated.

Also here is a link to another forum where it is all talked about. http://www.ar15.com/...62_.html&page=1

    I will have one.

I think if they could be made affordable there is a market. 7.62x25 is a dying round. 9mm will be around forever. Hopefully we will see a russian made one so anybody can make one cheaply. Just like we have done with all the Saiga line of products.

You are 100% correct and I've already done it. My design is a little more advanced than the EOD's though.

I'm having a real rough time deciding if I want to use my SLR106 UR as a donor for the second one?

Do you have any pictures of your build? What barrel did you use? And what magazines?

  7. So, will the aluminum lowers be considered an FFL item? Will they be like an AR15 lower? Stock tube hole and removable grip? I'm thinking about getting one of these before they get too expensive. Because if tromix has already started on parts a lot of othe people are gonna hop on the train soon.

  8. I got wind from a K-Var rep that they are getting over 140 new SKU's for th 2012 shotshow. And this was on the topic of the Vityaz sporting carbine.

My guess was he was hinting at they will be getting an example or two of them. I was told they didn't know exactly what they were getting. But over 140 skus mean they are getting a lot of stuff. Let's just hope one of those SKU's is a vityaz carbine. We wont know till January. So take it with a grain of salt. There may be some products we have all been waiting for other than the vityaz.

  9. I think they are if you want a lighter AK to haul around. I don't know if many of you have hauled a fully loaded AK around all day. They get heavy.

I'm going to get one of the mini dracos. For when I'm out hunting hog. My mosin only shoots so fast. It would be nice to have a good back up in 7.62x39. When the piggy desides it didn't like getting shot and charges. Or if I get swarmed by a whole mess of them and need something to get them away from me while I run for the hills!

The Draco isnt that much lighter than the full size AK as you only give up a few inches of barrel. The AK is extremely light I take my 308 hog hunting all the time. I dont get it you say the AK is too heavy but you want to carry a mosin plus a draco?? Why not just a rifle and maybe a .45 or a knife to finish them off if needed.

I'm just try'n to talk myself into one tongue.png

Plus have you seen the price of .45 acp these days? Geeze.

A knife? Wow I never want to get that close to one. The hogs here in Texas don't mess around.

  10. Unfortunately I've run into a very basic problem- my Sheriff has a no-sign policy, at least that's what I was told when I called, for Form 1 NFA items. I'm going to try and set up a trust I guess. Are they complicated? I really don't want a lawyer getting involved for the extra expense. How does one transfer property property to the trust and then create a SBR as a trust?

From what I'm to understand trusts cost around $600. For one rifle it isn't worth it. But if you must go SBR and have no other options than I guess roll with it or come election time. Vote for a diffrent sherif.

So, $600 for the trust (in the long run you can make multi sbr's) and a $200 tax stamp. You just turned a $400 gun into a $1200 investment.

  12. If we can't get pistols something like this would be the next best thing. Just get a stamp, chop the barrel, re-crown it, and attach a muzzle device. Come to think of it that might be better than the pistol as cutting the barrel is arguably easier/cheaper than adding a rear trunion. However the downside is I don't think it would be coming in with a folder so if one wants that (I know I would) there is still all the same work a pistol would be plus the barrel work. Gun restrictions that are just annoying hoops to jump through to get the same end result are so silly.

It's pretty dumb I agree. They just want more money out of us with those $200 stamps. How else is the ATF going to make their money?

A configuration like the one pictured would be nice.

those would be sweet but, i would think of it this way if we were too ever see those come to our shores, most likely would look like the current saigas being imported, with the sporter stock trigger housing all the way to the rear, single stack only, non traditional hg etc...just to get them here as per importation laws. i have my name on a list for the vepr-12s that will be hitting our shores, but will also be losing all those cool factors just like the picture above, damn these import laws.

I wouldn't mind a Saiga type config at all. I had fun converting my x39. Building another would be just as fun and probably faster since I have one under my belt now.

I'd imagine it would have to be modded similar to the current rifles. As we are now seeing saiga rifles with the front half more as it should be, it would be nice if we could at least get that much.

Yeah, I wish they had come out with those when I bought my original Saiga x39. Would have made the conversion a lot easier. Seeing as the hard work has already been done.

i like i want please i need my fix

heads in the clouds once more

You and me both. I think a lot of people would buy these.

  13. The Russians put AK factories in every goat shed in every shit hole in the world.

WHY don't they put one HERE?

With all the AK's floating around the 3rd world that market must blow. In the US we can't get those, so an American made AK series would make big $$$$$. Especially if they make them in all the calibers we want. I would bet the American market would be larger than most 3rd world military buys. With the added attraction of being a steady demand so the factory can run at a steady pace, instead of boom or bust.

Oh, Don't you mean Arsenal? LOL. I think they pretty much make AK's now. Aside from making the receivers. And then after fit and finish you get an $800 AK-74 :-X
