1. Man, I've been missing out on some of my favorite topics! I need to check in here more often. Gardening is my second-biggest hobby, with guns being first. My 2011 garden was ~800 sq ft, but I moved and I'm down to less than 150 sq ft. Makes Jonny sad. :(

Pre-started plants: In some regions, it's your only option to get any real results. Tomatoes in particular take too long to start producing from seed around here (NE IN). Starting indoors is unbelievably rewarding but can end up being cost-prohibitive. I get all of my tomatoes and peppers from a couple local greenhouses. It's important to note which variety you are buying as well. For instance, I love fresh sugar peas. I picked up some Oregon Sugar Pod II's and some Sugar Daddys last year. The Oregon Sugar Pod II variety did well at first, but bolted as soon as it got hot. You can find charts that show all of the characteristics of a certain variety like disease resistance, germination time, time to harvest, etc.

Planting on a hill: If you're growing peppers, you can use this to your advantage. Obviously the higher end will drain faster and generally retain less moisture. Hot peppers produce more capsaicin if they dry out a little more between waterings. I'm on a hill this year too so my hot peppers are going at the top.

Don't overlook soil amendments: Keep an eye out for things like high clay content, sand, soil pH, and how well certain plants perform this year. Around here, the "soil" is mostly clay which is horrible for gardening. It retains moisture fairly well but when it dries out, it's completely bone dry. Then it packs down hard (roots need some air too and can't spread worth crap when they have to fight through clay) and won't hold nutrients at all. I've been fighting they grey scourge with cocoa bean shells (breaks down fast, loosens the soil, gives nitrogen boost), sphagnum (peat) moss (same as cocoa bean shells but less nitrogen and holds water well), and perlite which is an expanded volcanic rock commonly used in potting soil (that white stuff that looks like styrofoam). This year, I also tracked down some vermiculite (holds nutrients until the roots reach it). By tilling all of the above, I'm hoping to reproduce the 10' (not even exaggerating) tomato plants I had back in '11. I'll have to scrounge up some pictures of that garden.

I use a micro-irrigation system which I've cobbled together from materials at Lowes, Menards, and Harbor Freight. Lowes has a "Mister Landscape" starter kit that you can use as a manifold line. Then grab some valves and sprayer heads (should be right next to the kit) and head off to Menards (assuming you have these three stores in your region). At Menards, they have Rainbird brand stakes for watering at $0.88 instead of the $5+ for the Mister Landscape brand that do the same thing. Then off to Harbor Freight to snap a $10 drip kit (you just need the roll of hose and some of the fittings). Bam- you just made the most easily customizable, totally badass watering system in the world for like $50. We had a wicked drought last year- I laughed. :lolol:

Holy shit, now I remember why I've been staying off of here- I ramble too much. :)

  2. I'm a welder, so carrying would be no bueno. :) My bosses are pretty cool about it though. One keeps a Colt Double Eagle in his lunchbox and the other brings his G21 inside when we work late. This past summer I was the only one working past 10pm. He asked me where my gun was and I told him it was in my truck. "Wtf is it doing out there? We're all alone here- go get your piece." We've never had any serious trouble, but it's not comforting to think that the "Barber Shop Shooting" was right down the street...

  3. Keep us posted man

Well they just cancelled the Precision Rifle Shoot for this weekend due to the rifle range being underwater. Lame!

Hey y"all. Looks like us Ft Wayne/New Haven folks could take over. ha. Jonny Im just up the road from u. Take the new extension for Maplecrest and its about 1/4 mile to my place. Im hopin Max can set up some range time. I need to get out and release some tension.

Lol! I'm on the back side of Meadowbrook, like 1/4mi from Adams Ctr. Agreed, Jonny wants mag dumps. After the Facebook discussions I had with some liberal fuckwads this morning, Jonny NEEDS mag dumps.

Ha! Like I said before about your Dad's place, Rayne, you're only about 5 minute away from me! Auburn isn't a bad drive from our neck of the woods. Glad to hear you found something! It wouldn't happen to be a place that does lots of injection molding for automotive, would it?

I'd love to go shoot, but weekends are hit and miss for me and week nights are absolutely out. My fiance is away at school and when comes home I like to spend my time with her... Range trips aren't really her thing though... I never know what is going to happen at work so I never know when I will get out of there... plus they frown on things like having your car stuffed full of guns and ammo in their parking lot! :)

Anyhow... If we get up enough guys and some cool hardware I'll make the time.

Jonny: You work on E Pontiac? You a bail bondsman? Make fake IDs? :haha2: When I worked at Navistar we always got a bit worried when we had to go over to the test track... I've heard plenty of stories about guys working late out there and hearing gun fire.

That is no joke, my friend. I work second shift at the old Fruehauf building. In the summer, it is not even unusual to hear shots fired. Oddly, LEOs don't show up for about 10-15 minutes. :)

My personal favorite of these incidents was about 10:30pm.

Just around the corner, I heard:

    Pop!

    Pop pop pop!

    Pop pop!

    BOOM!!

    -tires squealing-

Somebody done got fucked-up. No sirens at all that night. This is why I keep at least one spare mag on the dash and a round in the chamber.

  4. I didn't know things were down (haven't been around much lately). Auburn, eh? That's a bit of a commute. Still, in this economy it's hard to find work that pays worth a damn. Gotta take what you can get I s'pose.

Looks like I'll be up at Hillside Saturday morning unless it floods out again. I was going to see if either of you guys would like to meet up but I've gotta help a buddy move as soon as I'm done there (test-firing my very first reloads). Maybe in a few weeks I'll have time and ammo again and we can ring some steel.

  5. Ah, I've never made it to one of the K's Merch shows. Something always seems to come up. I'm in Fort Wayne pretty often- I actually work on E Pontiac, hence me being on a gun forum. :lolol: I'd be surprised if we haven't bumped into each other once or twice.

Either of you fellas on IndianaShooter? Ever make it up to Hillside?

Hells yeah, we can go shoot sometime. Max's right, Rayne- gotta get another. Hell, even I have a spare! :)

If you do decide to tackle it yourself many of us "locals" have resources available to help. If that's absolutely not an option, and if it was me, I would probably send it to one of our well respected vendors. Lots of good work and solid support comes out of many of them.

^This. I know a guy in New Haven who would gladly help you DIY for free. :) If you are set on sending it out, stick with the forum vendors. They have resources and experience far beyond any of the guys around this state.

  7. Signs mean nothing. Trespassing if you don't leave when asked?

Fuck it. You don't want my business? That's your choice.

I carry everywhere I go. New IN law allows carry to work (to- not in). I leave my 1911 in the truck 'till it's time to clock out, then it's on my hip. Thus far, openly carrying has had overwhelmingly positive consequences. Concealed carrying has given me great peace of mind.

IMO, the crazy ones are those who believe their protection lies in anyone's hands but their own.

  8. Sucks for long time firearms owners lookin for a traiditonal fun day of looking and buying guns, ammo, and related items. But, it's a great thing for the 2nd Ammendment. The more gun owners out the there the less likely Pres. Barry and his minions will be successful in taking our 2nd Ammendment rights away from us.

I hope you are right liberty but i fear just the opposite.

How many of these panic buyers will exercise proper safety protocol? I'm concerned that many have no experience with firearms beyond the video games they play.

If there is a sudden rash of accidental shootings due to mishandling it could ad fuel to the already raging anti-gun fire.

I would love to be more optimistic about the future of our rights but my optimism is in short supply these days.

That is exactly my concern as well. I think it's great that people are coming around, but I've heard way too many people talking about buying and immediately carrying a handgun. Not to be sexist, but I especially worry about all the ladies getting into it now. Most are completely new to the world of firearms and don't have a clue what to do.

Fortunately, several local gun shops and ranges in my area have stepped up and started women's CCW classes as well as "Ladie's Night" at the range. Props to them- ownership is only half the battle.

Personally, I'm more worried about every newly licensed 16yr old, hitting the road for the first time. Lots more of them, and more likely to have an accident.

Excellent point! It was interesting to see the statistics RIA shared on their Facebook page. Intentional shootings were the lowest cause of death, with accidental shootings being the second lowest. Vehicular accidents were waaaay the hell up at the top of the list.

  10. It wouldn't surprise me in the least. I know people who have been lawfully carrying a holstered handgun, only to have some jackass call the cops and say, "Oh my god! Help me! There's a man with a gun!"

I took a handgun course last year and the instructor was telling us about a guy who was shot by the police because of this. He was with his family at Home Depot and someone in the store saw him and called the police.

As he was leaving the store, the police drive up and tell him to "freeze" and all that. He complies and as he's raising his hands in the air, his shirt raises revealing the CC gun.

    They shot him right there.

I'm not sure where this happened or even if this story is true (can anyone provide a reference?), but that has remained the only reason I don't carry on my person. I just keep it in my bag or car. People are just too skiddish, and I'm much more concerned with those folks than I am any murderer, thief, etc.

I don't have any officially reported cases like that, but I absolutely believe it.

Odd as it may sound, that is why I have begun open-carrying (legal with LTCH in state of IN). People fear that with which they are not accustomed. I was asked to leave a grocery store this past summer because I had my .40 on me. I took it up with management and won. Now when I run into the same supervisor who asked me to leave, there is no apprehension. I am treated with respect by the staff and they, in turn, correct other customers when they get skittish about me.

It is unfortunate that this is rarely the case...

  11. The whole thing could be a vindictive bitch of a wife wanting to wreck a man's life.

Could be. Is this how this will pan out? Anyone that gets pissy with you and know you own guns goes to the cops and fabricates some lie?

It wouldn't surprise me in the least. I know people who have been lawfully carrying a holstered handgun, only to have some jackass call the cops and say, "Oh my god! Help me! There's a man with a gun!" I've even heard rumors of people claiming, "He was waving the gun around and acting threateningly!" When no such behavior was carried out.

People believe what they want to believe. If the media says, "Guns are the source of the problem," the general populace will seek the comfort of a scapegoat.

Laws, restrictions, increased security measures, and fearmongering are not the answer. Education, moral values, human interaction (love thy neighbor), and a bit of logical thought are.

  12. I hope the same thing happens. Infact, I would venture to say it happens more than we realize already. But I doubt that it would ever be reported outside of a blip on a local news or a paragraph on page 24 G in a local paper.

Actually, it does happen quite frequently. I've read numerous small reports (none of which I can remember the specifics of) in which the "bad guy" was taken out before he could do any serious harm.

You are spot-on about the media though. I always thought people were exaggerating when they said the media tries to "brainwash" you. Hell no! It's quite literal!!

When people see me OC'ing, they always ask, "Do you have a permit for that?" It's what they see on TV. My personal favorite is, "That's registered, right?" They have no idea what the laws of this state are. When asked, "What permit might that be and where might I have registered it?" They just stare blankly.

    Silly, silly sheeple.

  13. Oh, great! In my neck of the woods, no less!

I've been fighting hell to make people aware that the state of Indiana allows open-carry in public places for years now. I had finally just won a couple of small 2A victories, and now this.

My hope in all of this is that after all the violence of late, someone armed steps up and is in the right place at the right time to put the next one down and save some lives & liberty.

    -fingers crossed, gents-

  14. Hey they go bang every time...

So does my ex, but that doesn't mean I want that bitch hanging around!

Nah, they are what they are- neat little shooters for the money, backed with a good warranty policy from what I've heard.

As to the OP, this is unfortunate. I'm getting really tired of all these shootings being publicized by the liberal media. It's one thing to state the facts, but they don't even do that. My LGS got robbed about a month ago and the first report was that the owner had been shot in the face, a customer had been grazed, and the shop had been pilliaged. A friend of mine spoke to dispatch an hour later and they informed us that no shots were fired, the owner had been beaten by hand, and four guns were missing.

People just love to tell a sensational story, and the media has a field day every time a crime is committed with a firearm.
