Lookin' good! Maybe lengthen the far left one a bit to match the other 2.
I'm looking to do the same with my Saiga eventually. Test it out on the range and let us know if it helps cool the barrel!
yea it does look shorter, but actually its only by like 2mm. no biggy since you cant really tell in person. As far as cooling, I just got back from an outing.
Without vents: after 40 consecutive (2 per second) rounds the hanguard was very hot and uncomfortable to hold
With vents: same test, hanguards are warm around vented area. still comfortable to hold. i must say it is a very worthwhile mod. especially for free.
i shot off 250 rounds today and not once did the hanguard get excessivly hot.

i used a dremel hss inverted cone cutting bit in my drill press. i was a little nervous that i was gunna screw up big time, but they came out pretty good in the end.

i decided to do this mod today after reading about the positive results. i did manage to get one side fairly straight, but i wasnt so lucky on the other side. i did figure out a good way to keep things lined up (hence one good side) . too bad i didnt figure it out before i started .
first off, a drill doctor is the way to go here. i sharpened my bit after 2 holes which helps keep the bit from wandering. next, you definatly need a starter hole. i tried using a center punch but it wasnt enough. so i took the smallest drill bit i could find, and trimmed a bit off of the shaft. the idea is to have the bit sit deep into the drill press chuck. i had only about 1mm of bit sticking out, which eliminated wandering and was just enough to make good starter holes.
i would love to do my handguards next, but i think i'll wait till i pick up a cross slide vise...

While at the gun show today. 16" barrel, BHO, plus a 30 rnd mag, for $325. i do not plan to convert it as i really like the traditional type buttstock. i think the 30 rnd is the new surefire mag (at least thats how the stand owners wife explained it). it locks in perfectly, but i didnt have time to try it out for real.
I am wondering about the reciever though. it is marked RAAC and has 06 under the certification test mark, but it also has the b-west inport mark that was etched out ? there are no dimples, but does have a small bevel on the chamber. i'll get pics up later this week.
the only problem i have is the hollow stock leaves the rifle feel front heavy, so i just filled the empty space with expanding foam and some small lead weights. im hoping it will give a more solid feel.
i'll give some more info tomorrow after i test her out
