  1. Fkn awesome! :super:

That was well worth the price of admission! I had a great time and that stage will be talked about for years to come!

Thanks Iain for all your hard work!

You were there, Holy Cow which squad were you in? I wish I had known, I always like sayin hello to Saiga 12 forum members. If ya thought that stage was cool, just wait, this was a learning experience using night vision in this setting for us. Once I figured out how to get each person set up in an efficient manner the process went along fairly smoothly. NOW, we are planning more. I am thinking something the size of an Ironman stage, In the Dark. Stay tuned kids.

  2. I've found Remington 1 oz. Sluggers work best in my barrel/ choke combination for 3-gun events. I can get 3-5 inch groups bench rested and have 100% hits on a standard IPSC cardboard target at 90 yards standing. A friend recently used Winchester slugs at one match and the slug loads smoked so much we really thought Winchester was using black powder. Just my two cents, but dump that Poly-Choke as it will not contribute to slug accuracy nor give you reliable shot patterns. This is from over a year of personal experience with one and the best thing I did was have the barrel bored for a Remchoke instead.

OHHHH I hear yeah on the poly choke... unfortunately it is silver soldered on after... We shortened the barrel... yeah I screwed myself there. However as long as I set the poly choke and don't touch it I am getting 3 to 5 inch groups at 60 yards. With a Remington reduced recoil slug I can get under 3 inches. problem is it won't runt he gun on anything but gas setting 3 DAMN IT ! ! !

Anyone know where you can get a replacement barrel LOL?

  3. Well I just got back from the Ironman this year and on my squad of 10, 8 were running Saiga 12s and of that 7 were R&R guns. I am running the R&R Mag well with R&R converted Surefire mags and the left side charging handle so mine has some R&R goodness in it.

All in all the R&R Saiga was WELL represented ! ! !

  4. I am guessing that the thought here is to get an Ammo that is for serious defense use and specifically long term storage, loaded in the magazines? I like the idea and I would be in for a couple of boxes in 00 buck or number 4 Buck and slugs as well. I have been thinking of looking into getting some brass cases from the Cowboy Action Cats for just such an application.

I hope this comes to fruition.

  5. THAT WAS EXACTLY what I was thinking of doing with the AGP mag well. I could get the mag in each time but it was not a positive thing like with the R&R mag well. The problem is, with the AGP mags there is a screw boss on the front of the AGP mags. Your onto something there but you might have to make a provision in your "guide" for that screw boss. I like the way your thinking, something to cover that lip of the forward edge of the mag opening in the receiver mag hole created by the gap in the front of the magwell.

The R&R Mag well on the other hand, inside front edge, (on mine) actually overlaps (just a smidge) the front of the opening of the opening in the receiver. It ensures that the mags is smoothly guided into the Receiver.

I will try and get some pics and get em up later,

  6. Where's the poll option for "Doing Fine Without One???"

Alas the mag well takes the gun into a new dimension of being usable, it REALLY does. The difference is just night and day. The left side charging handle, also an evolutionary step forward. Once you pick one up a run it you will look at the un-modded Saiga as truly pedestrian.

    SORRY but it is true.

That being said I have a JT Travers first gen mag well (actually a couple of them and a a bunch of modded AGP mags. I have gone to the R&R mag well with the Surefire mags to go with it. All I can say is OHHHH BUDDY ! ! !

Doug knows what I am talking about.

  7. Holy Crap this thing is long. Has anyone shortened theirs? Mine sticks so far back I have to move my trigger finger around it to get it in the trigger guard. I see a shortening and slip on button of some sort in the future.

  8. For me I can only shoot slugs at my local range and whenever I clean mine with my tornado brush, it looks the same.

I have the exact same constraints at my firing range.... which is why I finally decided to sell my S-20 and opt for a Saiga rifle.

zenmetsu -- If you found yourself surprised by the amount of lead shavings that you removed from your barrel using the tornado brush after shooting slugs, I can't help but to wonder how many forum members here DON'T thoroughly clean their shotgun barrels using a tornado brush (because there really is no other best way to remove those lead slug deposits from the barrel).

    :smoke:

Ahhhhh that would be me... I usually just run a bore snake through mine a couple of times every couple hundered rounds are so...

This thread has now SCARED ME ! ! !

Tornado must find one and not shoot till find one...

  9. Just got back on this forum and am happy to see the Iron Man supported here so well.

I just shot my first one this summer and loved it.

My 63 yr old father completed it as well, so anybody thinking it's to hard needs to just give it a try. He also won the Heavy Rifle Raffle of a DPMS 308. It's probably one of the best 3 days of training anyone can participate in, and is going to make you a better shooter no matter what.

I was the only Heavy Rifle Trooper this year, and my LR308 AP4 cost me horribly the whole damn match. It Jammed at least 5+ times on 9 of the stages. Then towards the end my saiga started turning into a straight pull single action. All the cleaning in the world would only help for so long.

Congrats Russell, It's cool to meet you on the web, and looking forward to seeing you next year.

Austin Hecker, who won "Limited" posted some vids of Iron man online.

Here's a perfect example of my worst stage. Warning Profanity!

Good on Ya for shooting the Ironman and tell your father he is hard core for coming out as well. By the Third morning of getting up at O-dark Thirty I was Tired. I normally work nights and having to shift from going to bed after midnight and getting up when ever to going to bed at 2300 and getting up early is OHHHHHHHHHHH so much fun.

What major issues were you having with both the rifle and your Saiga? My experience with the Ironman is that the Saiga gas port area and plug must be cleaned EVERY NIGHT with out fail. The huge amount of gas (and lead) will seal ya up tight if left unattended.

  10. Not to rain on anyones parade, as one can certainly do whatever they like, but I've wondered about why someone would do a tan or desert camo pattern on their S12 if they don't live in a desert area. Arizona, New Mexico, etc. yeah I can understand. But for instance in Ga. where I am? Do you know how much a tan S12 would stick out in the terrain around here.

Try looking at a black firearm with NV and you will understand why folks choose other colors.

Go FDE all the way. It is my favorite color for my firearms. Once I get some time, I will be using KG on my S17.

I did mine in a Tan of my own creation. I am traveling at the moment so I don't have pics of it to post but i think it looks outstanding.

On the concern of a FDE weapon in a heavily green enviroment, FDE is a great base for other colors added to break up its's outine. Also FDE does look quite differnt when viewed by a NVD. The FDE seems to not absorb so much light thereby. Black weapons stand out like a sore thumb when viewed with a NVD.

  11. The match is over :)

SinistralR won Trooper again; Ian (the guy in the great story) took third in Trooper. Some fat ass took sixth in Open, somehow, despite blinding incompetence. Squad 7 was Saiga-Heavy and a great bunch of hard working SOB to boot :D

    Alex

I just got the results to open and DUDE ! ! ! you beat Beven Grams ! ! ! Holy Cow plus in overall you were way ahead of Bob Novack and Travis Gibson and a WHOLE slew of others.

I dream about being near the top...

    --------SIGH---------

Someday and tens of thousands of rounds later...

Yeah Squad seven was Saiga heavy. Again Tell fred for all his help with mine. Nothing like going into a big match like this and having Super Saiga Gunsmiths right in your own squad.

  12. A friend at the match (thanks Pete!!! ) gave me a Gunfixr gas reg to start me on the path of creating my Saiga comp killer so watch this space for the results..... :D

Yer Quite welcome. Pay back for kindness from one of your fellow 7th Armored Brigade Soldiers in the First Gulf War. Now lets see what your Saiga morphs into.

Stage 7, the totally blind Pirate-Hostage escape stage is quite possibly the best stage I have seen at a 3 gun match ever. Very creative and challenging. Thanks to Sam and the guys for making that happen.

I gotta agree that was indeed one of the funnest things I have ever shot in any Three gun match. I hope Sam dreams up some more stuff like that. The belt fed 240 Golf at the end was a REALLY nice touch that didn't have to be there. I am sure that cost Sam a small fortune.

The stage did provide one of the funniest moments in the whole match. Sam yelled at one of our squad walking up to the stage to hurry up and run down the road.

"This is the RUN part of run and gun ! ! !"

To Which Ian Harrison (former British Army) Strode up purposefully and replied in his British accent

"Officers never run, it scares the men."

The look on Sam's face was priceless.

Congrats on winning trooper, Russell that is an ass kicker to even finish. One guy in my squad was wearing NO KIDDING La Sportiva Makalu's (serious mountain climbing boots) so as not to twist an ankle humping all his gear from stage to stage.

    HARD CORE ! ! !

  13. It was nice to have met you guys and all the help keeping the Saiga running. Saiga 12s were very well represented this year. You cats are great to shoot with, I gotta get down to Texas and see ya'alls digs down there.

Hopefully people will post some pics... cause I managed to come away with only 6 pics the whole time...

Great Match, Great people, still sore, headed home

  14. Post some pics of the Robinson XCR please. That does look nice. I just Duracoated my S12 and I will get some pics of it this weekend and get them up.

As everyone has stated PREP is the key, the painting part is the easy part.

Mine has been ultimately protected as it was first parked, then Gunkoted over the park, and finally Duracoated a tan color.

    Pics to follow,
