Fact:  The most common AR ammunition has 1,200 ft/lb of energy inside 10 yards.  Unless you make a very stupid ammo choice (like M855), the bullet will yaw/expand/fragment and will dump that energy in the target.  That's going to be lethal for almost any torso/head hit.

855 will do a great job....from the 20" barrel it was intended for.  Mall ninja M4's don't have it!

M193 from a 20" will leave your lungs on the other side of your body at HD ranges.

  2. I have bvac jhp remans that i have now relegated to shtf.

I have win white jhps and i am not sure what high priced jhp i have in my ammo storage, just haven't looked at the high priced as it was given to me by a guy getting out of semi amd going strictly revolver.

Ive looked at the machined brass bullets, even contemplated the rip ammo, just haven't made a solid decision on full time sd ammo.

As for 12gauge, I have black cloud loaded as my home defense round for the s12.

Hope that Black Cloud is buckshot, or you'll be pissin in the wind!  Birdshot is strictly for the birds!

My first S-12 kill was made on a rabid coyote at 10 yds.  Took 30 rounds of target loads to stop him dead.  I knocked him over at round 5, and it took another 25 to stop all movement.  The problem with birdshot is penetration. #2 will give maybe 2" of penetration on a duck, which is normally enough, but I've seen mallards take 9 solid hits of #2 at 15 yards and fly off.  Also, birdshot can be deflected by biker jackets. Yeah, a head shot with a good duck load is going to be one painful lesson, but it will open you up to a lawsuit.  Minimum shot size should be #1 buck for HD.

  3. Remember, it isn't the machine, but the operator.  That is what got our asses initially kicked in the air at the beginning of the Vietnam War.  Pilots were not trained for dog fighting...it was a 'thing' of the past, despite very experienced and senior pilots protesting against it.

I have no doubt that the F35 is a great plane.  But at what cost?  I GUARANTEE that a plane, just as superior, could be built for half the cost.  But with kick-backs, over inflation of cost estimates, congressional pork/favors, it will not happen.

    True on that!

When my father was at Ft. Sill, he got to talk with a Rockwell radar tech. (Dad also worked for Rockwell)  The tech told him about the overrun problem on the new fire control radar being fielded.  They start out with a damn good radar, and go into production.  Then the Army wants to add some new features, so production stops and things get retooled and A model starts rolling.  The Army then wants even newer features, so production stops again.  B model starts rolling, and on and on.....  This constant start and stop crap is what drives up the costs.  If they'd just build the whole run without stop, there would be no overruns.

I think the F5 was a damn pretty airframe!  That plane just looks fast!  Too bad they underpowered it!

  4. We need fighters that are cheap and by the thousands.  I'm so sic of the MIC bullshit about how having this one fighter is worth an entire WWII air wing.  That air wing could cause 10,000 times the damage that that one fighter can.

Look at the F22 vs. the F15.  The F22 carries 4 missiles internal plus the gun.  The F15 8 missiles + bombs, or add a few more missiles, and then the gun.  Who's going to stay in the fight longer?

The same is true between the A10 and F16.  The A10 can carry a bomb load that the F16 couldn't even leave the ground with.

And every time they buy a shiny new toy, the force gets cut that much more!  Didn't we learn our lesson from GWII?  We need the real boots on the ground to win a battle, not some shiny expensive little toy!

What we need is about 1-2000 of the F20 Tigershark.  The old F5 airframe could match the F16, but the F5 was underpowered.  With the F20 design, the F5 could finally match the F16 at half the cost.

  5. 9mm is fine out to 50 yards or so.  124 gr JHP's out of a 5" barrel (M11/9) have enough power to punch clean through a WI whitetail, unless you hit a leg bone, then it will shatter it and bounce.  The 16" barrel will give better results.  I normally use 9mm when I can't see more than 50 yards in the woods.  No need to have something that will launch one into the next county.

Good bait is a pouch of Red Man sprinkled on the ground.  Deer love it!  Game wardens can't find it!  And if they do see you spreading it, you're giving an offering to the indian hunting gods.

  6. You can snag a HP for around $500.   Just lost the old XP machine last week.  Fucking hate Windows 10!

Pull the motherboard and replace all the 5V buss filter caps with 10V caps, and that XP will run forever!   6.5V caps running at 5V will eventually start puking their guts.  Idiot engineers running with no safety factor, just like those kaboom 50's.  Methinks they need a lesson about safety factors with 62,000 psi right next to their face!

I'd stick with Mil spec parts as much as possible.  That way if things go up, you can cannibalize military rifles.

Okay, if you get a military M4/16, are you really gonna cannibalize it or are you just gonna slap your upper on a full auto lower?

Both!  I'd take lowers till the stable is all select fire, then break the rest down for spares/barter materials.

People have a hollywood/video game idea of what shtf is like.

Full auto feels powerful, feels badass, but aimed fire is more effective and conserves ammo.

The odds of being in a situation in shtf where full auto fire is needed are nearly zero.

True...But there are times when having full auto is useful.  Like taking out vehicals or aircraft.

It does wreak havoc on the 210 round per quarter rationing in the bunker, but if you go empty, you grab one of the backup AK's.
