  1. Gonzo, I didn't say (or didn't mean to say) that the stock was too short. It is too long. I've spent a ton of time with an M-16, and I really don't know how you can say that it is longer. I have very long arms (38 inch sleeves) and it is just too long of a reach for me.

Yes, they let me try it before I bought it. But, it wasn't really intentional. I just didn't want the SKS I was there to pick up, and this was a far more attractive option.

Now, why do I want the axis pin retaining plate rather than a wire that it has now? And, will this confuse me when I am following someone's directions?

  2. Messiah, I didn't figure you'd actually want to use my rifle for the video- but it couldn't hurt me to offer. (And of course, the offer stand should you change your mind.) I would love the DVD, especially since I can't seem to find your CD anywhere. Since I've never done any metal work, or worked on any rifle other than the AR system I'm a bit concerned. Add to that the issues a guy is having on warriortalk with his conversion, and I'm debating just taking it to Tromix (they're only 90 minutes or so down the road.) But, I'd rather do it myself or find some small business or private 'smith do the work. Better to pay an enthusiast (and get a better price0 than pay someone that is just running their business.

  3. Gonzo, the reason I am looking to convert is two fold. One, I do want it to be a high capacity weapon. I think this is going to be a SHTF rifle. I'm not interested in just having a range gun. I don't hunt. And I already have a general purpose rifle. And, it seems difficult, at best, to find extra 10 round magazines- which further advances my desire to use magazines that are readily available.

Second, the ergonomics on this thing are horrible. The stock is too long for my tastes (I've shot the M-16/AR-15 series of rifles a great deal) and it is uncomfortable to shoot.

After my first range session it is clear that my less the ideal vision and the open blade sight design aren't going to get along, so some optics are in the future. If I'm going to throw money into the gun, I may as well make it the rifle I want.

I'm not looking to buy another rifle at this point because I really don't see the need. Since I have this rifle I would much rather make it the rifle I want rather than spending the money on a second rifle- especially of the same basic design.

Veriform, it isn't the rifle that bothers me, it is the metal work. I've never done anything even similiar. I don't have the tools that are mentioned in some web sites, and that bothers me. I see I can use a drill and a dremel, but it appears that a drill press is the desired method. Of course, I only live about 90 minutes from Tromix. So I suppose I know someone nearby to bail me out if I get in over my head. And, I am sure they can fix anything I mess up along the way.

I have no idea how to tell if the pistol grip hole is cut out or not. Of course, if it is that difficult, I would't be opposed to using a better sized Monte Carlo stock, or even a thumbhole stock. I don't know how to find out if it is there or not, so I'll tear the thing down and see if I can find something. Of course, it took me 20 minutes to get the thing back together last time. Just too used to the AR system I suppose, but the bolt carrier didn't want to fit back in for me... and that further worried me. Between that and a thread made by a guy having a heck of a hard time with the conversion on Warrior Talk is making me think twice.

But, I think I am going to start looking for pieces and see what I can do. Maybe the DVD mentioned will become available soon.

  4. I'd be more excited if it weren't reported by "socialized medicine" Canadian doctors, and was reported by our good old-fashioned American "one-percent less leftist than Canadian" doctors! :haha:

Actually, most doctors I know are pretty conservative. I shoot with a group that is made up of 9 people, 3 are doctors. My other half is a medical student, and just about everyone she knows is a Republican of one level or another. I would say the American docs are about 900 percent less leftist than Canadian.

  5. I've been looking around, and I think I'm nervous. I've never attempted anything like the conversion before. I'd be much happier if I could find someone that knew what they were doing to at least help with this thing.

Oh well, it will be fun with the 10 rd. mag for the time being. I just wish I had more than one of the things.

  6. Now, I don't want to give the impression that I don't like the gun, or that I don't want it. I just never thought of owning one. It will be going to the range for the first time tomorrow, and we'll see how it handles.

  7. I had no intention of buying a Saiga, or any other AK type rifles. I'm a pistol shooter, and have a scout rifle. I had always considered that 'good enough.' But, something was telling me I should get a better rifle, so I started looking. I had decided on a bushy AR, and was getting ready to buy one. But, then I was playing on auction arms one night and bought an SKS without meaning to. When I went to the FFL to pick the rifle up, I started talking and ended up leaving the SKS and some green paper and leaving with the Saiga.

I've visited these forums a couple of times in the past, but I am a total newb to any AK style rifle, and the Saiga is even more of a mystery. Other than knowing that is has a loyal following, I don't know anything. From looking hear today, it appers that I need to do some sort of modification to the rifle. So, I look forward to learning everything I need to know.
