  1. Go with the NATO. I am shorter than you, and even then my Warsaw + recoil pad is just a tiny bit cramped for me.

I strongly recommend the SAW grip. I love it. I have heard good things about some of the Ergo grips, maybe check those out.

If you are not too set on the synthetic set, consider a really nice set of wood furniture. BattleRifleG3 makes some high-quality stuff, and it is US-made and 922r compliant parts. Pick from basic replacement wood furniture, thumbole stocks, AK-style furniture, or even customize a set down to the last detail, for a truly unique rifle (or shotgun, in your case).

  2. Gun shows are your best friend... not only can you pick up and feel the actual firearm you want, but once you do pick it out, most of time they arrange the transfer for you. All you need to do is call the place and pick it up when it has arrived (if there is a wait period).

If you do not have a wait period ("cool-off" they call it), go in, pick the gun, pay the money, walk out with said gun 20 minutes later. Consider driving to the next county over if they have better gun laws such as no waiting period.

Don't forget to check local ads. If you can find a Face-to-Face for sale ad, most of the time you can just give em cash and they'll give you the gun (longarms only). Simple as that, no paperwork.

    Good luck!

  3. Thanks John,

That is exactly what I wanted to hear.

Since you are familiar with Florida, is there anything you would recommend/not recommend, in addition to what you have already stated, to a Floridian in that general area? St. Petersburg/Tampa Bay specifically. I mean, considering being on a penninsula, connected to yet another penninsula (FL itself). Some kind of floating vessel, boat, canoe, etc? Fishing gear? Or possibly something else I could not even imagine.

Thanks again for the great post/collaboration!

  4. JWarren,

I would love to know what specific things you have learned from the Katrina experience, and I'm sure many others here would like to know about it as well.

When did things start getting crazy? What types of things were you able to stock up on at the last minute? What did you manage to survive on during those several weeks? I'm just full of questions as I'd really like to learn from your experiences...

So what did a typical day consist of? Would you mind being specific about any self-defense situations that arose?

What would you have done (and hopefully are doing) differently for next time around?

What kinds of things would you recommend that would otherwise slip my mind?

Feel free to PM me with whatever you feel like sharing, or better yet post it on the forums so that all of us can benefit from your actual experiences.

  5. Well, I don't like the way they look, cosmetically speaking. I would have to pull it apart and make it my own.

On a broader scale, I think this is great. I think they will drive down prices on the overpriced millsurp Romaks and such. Plus at that price they will sell well at the Fun Shows and you will see alot of new AK owners. It is always a good thing when hunters that buy only "sporter style" weapons give in to that "Inner Child" and buy one.

Maybe it will even knock the prices back down on Saigas.

    +1 on the looks.

I'll head out to the Suncoast gunshow in Clearwater on the weekend of 24-25th. Hopefully there will be a few there, I'll handle it some, and report back on the prices of it and other AKs.

Now all we need is this gun in 12ga. Then say hello to cheaper S-12s... :D

  6. I would rely on:

    - Mossberg 590 (complete with bayo), with a few boxes of 00, #6 shot (for the birds :)), and slugs.

    - 7.62x39 Saiga, several mags and a half-case of ammo.

    - Several knives, including folding, survival, bayonet, etc.

    - some non-perishable edible basics

    - various toiletries, tools and clothing

    - fishing/hunting necessities

    - and a big 'ol boat of a sedan, keeps on going and going.

EAA Witness in 45 ACP and/or a CZ-75 are on the wishlist...

I would not wait at the house, the nieghborhood is bad enough without rioting/looting. I'd make a run for it, pick up a pal or two, and head to a remote location on the mainland. Haven't given this much thought yet, but ya gotta start somewhere.
