  1. The sites are attached to main components of the shotgun, so I would guess that they're attached in-house and not sold separately.

Something to remember with the 6" barrel - half of that is the shell. So effectively it's like a 3.25" or 3" barrel.

If I ever got an SBS, it would probably be a 10" minimum.

  2. I understand that Tromix is stacked very high with orders and isn't taking new ones until September. Congratulations on being the most popular Saiga conversion smith around!

What I'm most interested in is the anticipated offering of a Saiga-410 conversion to 444 Marlin. I know that the opportunity was offered for a guinea pig to do it at material cost only, and I wasn't in a position to consider it. But when/if the conversion is developed and proven by Tony's initiative when it fits his schedule, I'm interested.

    Three questions:

1.) When would Tony begin doing these conversions? I'm guessing no sooner than early 2008.

2.) What would pricing look like? I understand that barrel blanks are pretty expensive, but would it be possible to consider using take-off levergun barrels as a cost saving option? At one point Marlin barrels were about $45 at Numrich.

3.) Besides the barrel, what key changes would be involved? I'm assuming that some sort of rifle sites would be standard, either at the muzzle or on the gas block. Would it need a new gas block as well, and if so, would it be Tromix made or military surplus? Standard length gas tube? Standard length furniture?

My ideal 444 conversion would have a long barrel (say 20-24") without a muzzle brake, a muzzle mounted front site, and a classic (non-conversion) buttstock with a matching handguard.

  3. And I'm game pending pricing, schedule, and such.

Actually, on that subject, I might suggest/request that even if the schedule to do other conversions won't be open for a while, if the basic price and specs could be offered people could more firmly express their interest.

  4. If you're going to do a caliber conversion, it's more practical to build it fresh on a kit, particularly a current barrel-less kit.

There has been at least one 50 AE conversion done by a fellow by the screenname "Meeper" known on the FAlFiles and Gunboards.

SKSs are not cost effective to build anymore. The machining would cost more like $800. But they would be nice for a barrel conversion on existing ones. One company used to do them but I think they stopped. As a donor gun they would be pretty dang cheap if all you were converting was the cartridge.

I would love an SKS scout setup in 6.5 Grendel. 223 would require a different bolt face. I'd say X39, 350x39 (wildcat), and 6.5 Grendel would be the way to go on an SKS. 50 Beowulf maybe, but it would take some doing with the magazine.

Hate to burst the bubble on the S-12/223 combo, but think for a moment how much that thing would weigh and how tall it would be with one AK action under another. The S-12 would have to be SBS and the S-223 would have to be 20" for the muzzles to be flush.

At some point a rifle over the shoulder and an SBS shotgun at the side just makes more sense.

Folks keep telling Tony what to make, but a lot of them just want free gun porn and aren't really looking to pay what it would actually cost. Remember that Tony did quote a price on a beltfed 12ga.

  5. I am thoroughly amazed at the work you do! I sent you a PM, but incase you don't get it here's the contents:

can I have a price on a two piece set?

    http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?act=at...st&id=11422

I would want the butt-stock sans rubber pad, and a standard forend (as close to looking stock as you can get it) with sling swivel stud (going to use a harris bipod). I would want these in a deep red wood (whichever looks good and is cheaper). Oh yea, this is for a unmodified Saiga .223. I'm assuming that because there's no PG here there's no 922r problems

Would this be closer to what you're looking for?

  6. I'm on the same page as Mike and Bvamp. The hammer should be cocked back before the bolt is far enough back to catch the next round. I would look into replacing the FCG. There should be plenty of FCGs out there from all the conversions. The trigger and linkage wouldn't be the problem, just the sear (formerly trigger), disconnector and hammer. SOMETIMES mismatched parts can malfunction, so make sure you use a matching FCG.

  7. Here's the scoupe for this thread:

Many people have been interested in Romak III / PSL sets for quite some time, and I have been limited by the fact that I don't have a PSL on hand. In this time, PSL prices have gone through the roof as availability has dried up and as much as I'd like to get one I haven't been able to at a reasonable price. Romakdaddy's set a.) didn't have 100% standard PSL parts and b.) was done with a level of constant cooperation including a bit of final fitting by him. Some have been interested in something similar but none of those orders have taken off, and I think communication may not have been the best at my own fault.

BUT NOW... I have made a local arrangement for PSL stock fitting. Problem solved for a limited time. We have an appointment for mid summer. After the fitting, final shaping would proceed through the rest of the summer for a stock shipping ETA of September.

    What you get:

Three or four piece stock set with either separate P-grip and buttstock or integrated dragunov or thumbhole style.

Your choice of styles and options for all pieces. Buttstock length can be customized at no extra charge.

Your choice of wood pending availability. I can discuss options based on your preferences.

Stock sets will be shipped sanded and unfinished, ready for you to apply the finish of your choice.

While these will be fitted to a real PSL, there still may be some minor final fitting required. We're talking pocketknife or file at the most.

These can be fitted to the buttpads/buttplates of your choice at no extra charge as long as you provide the pad/plate and it is under 1.75" wide. A favorite of many is the limbsaver. Default will be a stripped and modified AR-15A2 buttplate.

    What it costs and when:

I price sets according to a base price for certain woods and no options, and then add according to wood choice and options. Base price will be $180 shipped. Details and option prices will be listed below shortly.

TENTATIVELY, there will be a 15 set maximum for this buy. I may be able to extend it, but if 15 orders are placed I may not be able to take more this time around. Of course if I get 15 orders really fast and more are beating on my door, I'll do everything I can to make a future arrangement. Heck, I might even be able to afford a PSL.

50% deposit is required by June 30, 2007. Balance will be due no later than September 30th, 2007. You are welcome to pay ahead of schedule. If your balance is not received or postmarked by that date your deposit will be forfeit, concise factual feedback left, and unpaid stock sets posted for sale. I'm sorry if this is a bit harsh, but some people don't understand the irreversibility of custom work. Of course I reserve the right to be reasonable, and to extend deadlines. Along with this comes the fact that being custom work, orders can't be cancelled. People who would wish to cancel are encouraged to find another buyer, presumably one who missed the original opportunity. I can assist if this becomes the case.

    Guarantees:

I promise to accurately quote and describe the details of what is included in an order. If I make a mistake I will correct it at my expense. That typically goes without saying, I call it an "honesty and accuracy guarantee". One thing that is critical to custom work however is the articulation of expectations. Any specific expectations of fine details of shape, wood grain, and such need to be made clear and mutually agreed upon. If I can't read my wife's mind (who I love dearly) I certainly can't read the minds of people I meet on the internet. So let me know what you have in mind and I will tell you honestly how close I can get before you commit to an order. Any and all questions are welcome, and I encourage people to take as much time as they need to make a decision. So I also have a "patience guarantee."

    Revisions:

People sometimes want to change an order once it's placed. Sometimes that's easier than others. Any changes have to be mutually agreed upon, and will probably have additional charges associated with them.

Attached to my sticky thread is a catalog which gives an overview of my work and some available styles. It doesn't include PSL specific furniture, but many styles shown for AKs and Saigas could be adapted for the PSL. I also expect to post some pictures of additional styles developed as time goes by.

I realize that this thread is worthless without pics. Some of you have seen pics, for those who haven't just hang in there. This thread is to break the ice and get the wheels turning. Please feel free to ask me any questions, preferably by E-mail, using my screenname at hotmail.

  8. If Saigas go DD, a few members of this site whose states don't allow DDs will mutate into zombies and eat all other Saigas and their owners.

And there's a big difference between a couple people working on drums and us being able to buy them. Not trying to join the unobtainium accusation crowd, but there seems to be a lot that needs to be done between now and the time we could actually buy them. I think we'll be lucky to see either in a workable 2.75" version by election time.

  9. Regarding the ATF and DD status, they are more likely to rule it a DD if people keep asking them about it. It's like if your neighbor calls the cops on you even if you aren't doing anything wrong, the cops will give you some instructions so that no one can accuse them of not doing anything.

If the ATF wants to declare the S-12 a DD OR declare the combination of S-12+Drum a DD, let them take the initiative. Some people are so anxious about it becoming a DD in a non-DD state that they are actually prodding the ATF into doing something about it.

Ruling a mag + gun combination when there is no actual law on mag capacity would be a very slippery slope to get on. If the combo is ruled a DD, there is a higher likelihood that the DD ruling would ultimately land on all S-12s, and not stop there, but move on to SBSs, Mossberg 590s, p-gripped sporting shotguns, slug guns, and use your imagination from there.

  10. I think the list of people who would like to be involved with Tromix is a long one. Hiring another person makes everything a lot more complicated, including most importantly quality control.

If you like what Tromix does, let him keep working the way he has, and if he finds someone he wants to bring on board on his own initiative, you'll know it's being done in his and everyone else's best interests.

Congrats to Tony on having the very good problem of too many orders.

  11. Sore for all of us because it hurt this forum.

My version is that the development of a drum was announced here against the clearly expressed position of this board. It was marketed with rude and profane words against everyone who opposed the idea, for which the developer has since apologized. He was banned from the forum and a misunderstanding among moderators caused Cobra to be banned by another mod. (I'm using the term misunderstanding very loosely and euphamistically.)

Then, another drum was advertised on its own site. Nothing this forum can do about that. So with the idea that drums are out there anyway, the drum developer who unwelcomely advertised here convinced the admin to allow him to post about it here. Since then we have seen a picture or two, a hand cycling video, and a live fire video that still didn't fire a complete drum without it falling out of the mag well.

So my version is that yes we are now TALKING drums, but they are far from on the market as they both show serious limitations. I wish very much that people attempting to make them had kept them to themselves until they were closer to market.

  12. If you want the highest capacity pump imagineable, put a 10rd extension on it, one made for the short tube. With the long tube, it would be even more than 10rds. Then you could use Aguila short shells, which feed in the defender, and have even more capacity still.

You'd have to use a longer barrel though, one made for the short tube, with a spacer in between the mag tube cap and the barrel band.

A model called the "practical defender" has the 8rd tube and a 22 or 24" barrel with chokes and rifle sites, and was designed for competition. I'd love one myself, and have been seeing one at a local big name store. Must resist...

  13. Here are the first group progress pics with more to come. You'll notice that the machining stages for fitting come first, and then on some items there's some basic contouring before they start to take a smoother shape under shaping tools.

Some folks here may recognize their orders, but this pic is not all inclusive. There are several more sets that are at the same stages that just didn't fit into the picture at the moment.

  14. You don't install the trigger and linkage when installing my US made FCGs. Some of us have used binding posts for cosmetic hole fillers, but if you're using it to pivot I'd say you'd need to start fresh. Perhaps an undersized screw with a bushing so that the threads don't rub against the trigger or link bar?
