  1. Any one have experiece with either of these? I was looking for something inexpensive for a truck gun. Local shop has both.

Winchester defender. wood stock 18" cylinder barrel, mag tube goes out to the end. 3" chamber. only s/n on reciever and white line on top to line up bead sights very good shape $175

Old remington 878 semi-auto 26 or 28" full choke barrel. nice wood but no checkering, No engraving on reciever. blueing loss on the reciever. Odd gun, but I understand that 870 barrels will work if you drill gas ports. $195

The price is without tax and they won't budge

I'd go with the Defender. Remington semi-autos are out there and are a dime a dozen used, especially the non-standard ones. (Standards being the auto 5, 1100, and 11-87.)

Winchesters, especially the standard ones, can be found at good deals but will only go up in value due to Winchester closing. The Defender has a few quirky neat advantages that you may or may not care about. One is that it, unliek Rem and Moss, can cycle Aguila short shells without mods.

The Defenders can be pricey too, so that price is a whopping good deal. I'd say jump on it if you're in the market and like what you see.

  2. I thought it was set forth in the new forum rules that one should leave prices and pics up after an item sells. If not, I'm for it being an explicit forum rule. I don't think people are removing them for any bad reason, it just needs to be made clear that they shouldn't.

I noticed some people are using the strikethrough feature for sold items. Seems like a good idea to me.

  3. For a belt fed 12ga, forget the Saiga and start with an MG design. Resize it and redesign to semi-auto only.

    Simple. Just costly.

Figure $100k = a year of engineering + 3-D design software licences + prototype machining.

Might get one, two, or three prototypes at that price.

Considering that some people pay tens of thousands for a registered MG, this is not a far stretch either. Someone just has to do it.

Then they could be produced for a measly $10k each or so. Seriously, that's not really all that bad either. Considering that some people pay a quarter that price for a high grade medium caliber AR. And a majority of that price for a Barrett M82A1.

This for something that fires only one shot per trigger pull, but many projectiles per shot.

Me? My holy grail of shotguns would be hopper fed. No belt or mag to load. Just a port to dump the shells in.

  4. Couple more items completed.

First is a reworking of a S-12 handguard made from hickory. This style is an attempt to simulate the AK handguard style in a one-piece form. I'm currently working on a new version of this style that emphasizes the lower handguard styling more and the faux upper less.

Second is a stretched Galil style handguard with integral retainer for the Saiga-308. It uses a buyer supplied rail. I am not confident in a rail-on-wood setup for any level of precision, so this wouldn't be useful for laser sites, but it's plenty firm enough for foregrips, flashlights, sling attachments, and other non-accuracy related items.

  5. I can make something similar. I've done them in a similar style to that and in the more curved wooden style. I agree that they are an excellent ergonomic shape.

Check out the two upper right grips in this picture:

And the lower right grip in this picture:

  6. I too have examined what it would take to make a doublestack 12ga mag. It is daunting, but:

IF you made a double stack 10rd mag that was as tall as the 5rd mag, I would consider it far superior to a single stack 10rd mag.

IF you made a double stack 20rd mag that was as tall as the single stack 10rd mag, I would be far more interested in it than a 12ga drum.

So IF you have actually factored in all the variables and have a solution, then by all means make them!

  7. Democracy is rule by the people. It does not necessarily mean rule by the majority.

Direct Democracy is rule by majority. Constitutional Democracy means rule by a Constitution that enumerates the powers of government and establishes how votes are to be taken and how they count.

Democracy is a broad concept that includes many forms and variations. Ours is one that is designed to protect the people instead of enabling them to force their will upon others.

  8. Now we'll all be searching the net for where "Ivan" came from, and he will become a favorite of the forum just like Miss Saiga, having nothing but an accidental association with the forum.

  9. I am new to the board, I would of only been a reader but this thread is very interesting.

I recently got a RAA Saiga since they are off list in California, my only option is to stick with the factory 10 rounders - but I DO have my pre-ban PMI mini-14 40 round magazines... if I could use those in my new Saiga then I would gladly spend $70 for that modification!

Please make some of these for us in California.

Thank you for that observation. I will consider it.

  10. In case there was any confusion, I am currently taking orders again. Here's how it's working:

    1. Current production run is scheduled for completion by the end of June. I'm not starting any more orders until then. Current orders will be completed and shipped between now and then.

    2. The next production run is scheduled for completion by the end of September 2007. The cut-off date to have your order in for that run will be the end of June.

    3. Romak III stocks, G3 mag adaptors, and other items that I've been holding off on due to the need to do them all at once, will have group buys announced when my schedule is more clear. There will be several stages of commitment (both on my end and yours) and payment which would be laid out in the initial thread.

    Edit:

As of 5-3-07, three orders are in the mail.

    Order count is 13.

  11. What I was getting at with rosewoods and filtration is that whatever a person typically needs for other woods, they need more for rosewoods. The rosewoods I'm familiar with are cocobolo and morado, both of which are very fine, dense, hard, and expensive. Padauk is hard, but not as dense (which isn't a bad thing) and not as expensive (also not a bad thing.)

I was just wanting to make the distinction between a good price and a jaw-dropping price.

Guess we had the same idea about the Galil style grip, that flaring it is an ergonomic and visual improvement. People will often ask me to copy an existing style of grip (usually a rare foreign one), which I do as well as I can. But no matter how much they paid me, I would have a hard time replicating any grip as close as your grip was to mine. Interestingly enough, I've seen a Russian grip or two where I look very closely at the shaping marks and think "Hmm, they made this the same way I would have." Good to know I'm on the right track.
