  1. I haven't "passed on the idea", but wood furniture orders have priority since I have been confident enough to take pre-payments, and then have to deliver in a reasonable time. I am streamlining those operations and expect to have more tiem available, in which I could catch up on sidelined projects such as this one.

The G3 mag adaptors will have priority over this because they are more of a niche item, while other mags may be a better fit for the S-223. Pro-mags aren't the best but at their current prices they may be a better deal than Mini mags with an adaptor.

A royalty arrangement with another person would be tempting, but tracking their sales and enforcing it would be undesireable. The only arrangement I would consider would be to sell a set of dimensioned drawings, machining notes, and other engineering related work that could be discussed and negotiated. Any interested parties may contact me.

  2. Saigas are a specialty item. All Saiga specific components are low quantity compared to other rifles and will always cost more. The reason they exist at all is that people value the Saigas enough to buy such items.

The advantage of a smaller market is greater individual attention and ability for customization. If you want a good deal, find a way to pay a fair price and get a lot for it, vs paying a low price and getting something that leaves a lot of room for improvement.

  3. Are you sure padauk is rosewood? It's good material for gun furniture but I don't think it's rosewood.

Rosewoods are highly irritant and require substantially more ventillation and respiration, and are 1.5-2x as expensive as Zebrawood. If someone offered a rosewood set for less than a zebrawood set, that would be most impressive. Offering a zebrawood set at such a low upgrade price IS impressive. Where I shop, zebrawood costs 3x as much as padauk.

Got any closeups of some of the items, particularly the flared Galil style zebrawood grip?

Looks a lot like this one and I wonder if they're related.

Please take this in the most amiable manner. :)

  4. More than 4 shots in a 44 Rem mag carbine, yeah I could go for that. But I'm not sure I'd want to be throwing quantities of 44 Rem mag downrange at current prices. 7.62x39mm has longer range and is less expensive. 357 might be a different story.

If someone made a 44 Rem mag carbine with various mag sizes, that would be great and I would get my hands on a big mag or two. But if it was more feasible to make a lower capacity carbine, say with a tubular mag, I'd go for that. 5-10 rounds of 44 would do it for me.

Actually, since my state doesn't allow hunting with semi-autos, I'd love a tube fed 44 pump. If Remington did a corresponding pump and auto like the 7600 and 7400 but with a tubular mag in 44 Rem Mag and 357, I think that would be win-win for everyone.

  5. I'm often told I'm long winded. So I'll let the pictures do the talking.

First two pics: Yugo and AKM handguards, one in a Krinkov style

Third pic: More progress on the classic full length US Mil style stock for the Saiga-308.

Fourth pic: The latest generation of grips and wood choices. The lower three are actually available if anyone wants to buy them. I was planning on making a big for sale post when more items are done and ready, but interest is welcome. The ones at the top are either not done or belong to a set in progress.

The two grips on the upper right are a new style of mine, designed to resemble the popular but rare Izhmash grip found on some Russian Saigas. This version matches the standard AK grip angle and has a more aggressive lower "bill", which can be trimmed if preferred.

The wood of the grips on the bottom are hickory, deep stained hickory (an experiment), and lyptus. The wood of the grips at the top is jatoba, wenge, phillippine mahogany, and bubinga.

  6. I think that the criteria is that it serve the same purpose as the original part.

For example, if you made the front end of an SKS into a Saiga handguard, that would probably still count as foreign. But if you sectioned the buttstock and shaped a handguard out of the wood, that would probably count as US made.

Case in point - I've come upon a few reject Chinese thumbhole stocks. I could probably form some into regular AK stocks. Those woudl still count as foreign parts. The grip section would be worthless. I could then make matching handguards and p-grips out of the wood in the other buttstocks, treating them just like wood material. I believe those would count as US made since I'm not making a handguard into a handguard, I'm making a buttstock into a handguard.

  7. The full length 1100 stock is still there, I'm not sure what I'll be doing with it in the future. I wasn't impressed with the shotgun but maybe that'll change as I learn how to take care of it better. I also don't think I'll be adorning that sasafrass furniture with a brass buttplate. I'll probably be making another stock on the same concept out of better quality wood.

  8. Dare I ask? Is that the one? It's going to look bee-yooti-ful in maple!

    Doc V

    Indeed it is. :D

I need a Handguard for my Saiga .223 in that Redheart color just like the one below but with a couple of vents in the side of it, can you make it for me?

I won't be using redheart in the future, but have a supply of padauk that would work very well for a similar color.

Can do that style with handguard vents. PM me if interested.

My beta version catalog is now available. It doesn't include prices, but includes an overview of styles and options.

  9. The thumbholes were a funny item relating to the ban.

They did count as pistol grips, so they counted as your one restricted feature during the ban. So you couldn't put a bayonet lug or a flash hider on a MAK-90. But they counted as "sporting", so an otherwise importable rifle could have a thumbhole stock and not need US parts. Hence the single stack WASRs still coming in with thumbholes. Then when they hit our shores the tools come out and they're modified to the unimportable double-stack models with US replacement parts.

Far as my abilities go, it MAY be possible to mod a Knoxx stock to fit a Saiga-12. My only concern would be the risk of modifying and messing up something so high in value.

A less expensive option that I could quote with confidence would be a customized stock with a limbsaver recoil pad.
