  1. yep!

I have a savage 99e 308 lever gun and wanted to replace it with the ruger gunsite scout.

I have seen several people saying that the steel cases were giving their gunsite rifles issues. FTF to eject, stuck cases.

Then I read some people were not having issues with steel cases but had only fired 20 or 30 rounds in total.

I usually put at least up to 60 rounds per week. I could not find anyone who could confirm that this type of use would not be an issue.

I have a large stash of wolf poly coated , silver bear (lacquer coated) and MFG ammo. I know the lacquer coated ammo has a reputation for jamming in American chambers but the rest should be fine.

next, i figured that a Russian bolt action would definitely handle the steel case ammo.

This evening ,I realized that, I already have a great 308 in the savage and it can do everything the scout can do. I just needed configure it in a similar and it has the benefit of a 20 inch barrel. I already know it doesn't handle the steel cases well but with brass its a great ,easy carrying, shooter.

I know myself and would rather save money by using cheaper steel case ammo for the range.

I am presently building my stash of 308 brass to hand load.

So I figured I would go ahead and get a vepr in 308. this will definitely handle all the steel case ammo I have and future brass hand loads. This gives me time to build my stash of brass, ability to shoot all the steel ammo I want, provide fire power as needed and double as a hunting weapon.

In time, I may make a decision to let go of one of them but not in the immediate future.

Its too bad that no one could give me concrete evidence that the gunsite could handle the steel case ammo without issue as it would have been nice to play with that rifle.

now I just need to sell my LNIB glock 26 4th gen to make up the money I am spending on the vepr.

    .

  2. I have been contemplated a bolt action rifle in 308. I want to use steel cases while I build up my brass collection. anyone have any knowledge about the saiga los-7 308 bolt action rilfe? I am sure they should be able to handle steel case ammo with not issues that I have heard about the Ruger gunsite etc.

  4. cool. thanks. wanted to trade my converted .223 with mags and ammo, sling and lula mag loader as a package. I want to pick up a ruger gp100 357 in 4 oor 3 inch, a 357 lever gun, and a marlin 39m or any other 22lr lever gun.

    yeah going old school.

Ever since i started back into revolvers....they are just so darn accurate and fun to shoot that i thought why the heck not just go back to lever action guns as well.

heck i am even considering my selling and or trading my 10/22 and glock 20 gear. Go figure!!! i never figured i would be wanting to go to the single action society side but stranger things have happened.

    thanks again.

  5. looks like the only real issue is the demensions of the indent on the front of the vepr mags. the saigas seem to taper from the feed lips to the front of the mag and seem somewhat wider then the vepr. I can't tell from the picture but it doesn't look like there would be enough material on the front of the saiga mags to grind and or sand the contuor. Him i wander if you took a heat gun to the front of the mag and despress both sides it would become narrow and allow small amount of grinding.

Maybe getting some promags would be a cheaper alternative. what is your range report on these mags. I do prefer the metal ones but some cheap reliable poly mags would be nice to round out the collection.

  6. Sorry for not being clear yes I am looking for the internal bolt hole open lever. I prefer that to the safety lever bolt hole open

I figured there may be some laying around as most people don't like them.

I am looking for a couple for the 308 as well. i will also need the springs.

Heck i figured there would be a bunch as most people don't use them when they convert. anyone?

  7. guys i am looking for a couple of the bolt hold open levers for the 308. If anyone has them the aren't using send me a pm. I would like to have two if i can. i haven't researched them for cost but send me a shipped price.

i guess i should be clear in that i am looking for the internal bolt hold open lever that most people don't use when they convert their rifles. I will need the srping as well. I just prefer the internal bolt hold open.

  8. I finally got a chance to get out to the range. Man I have a new favorite rifle. Other than ammo cost, I don't know why most people aren't using the .308 (vepr or saiga). i don't think the percieved recoil is much more than the 76.2 x39. it didn't take more than 20 rounds to get it on at 100. I took my time starting at 25 yards....where of course with the sights on the bull the impact was about 6 inchs low and about 4 inchs low at 50 yards. it was here that i actually moved the sight to hit a several bulls with a 6 o'clock hold. I had to adjust the sights again at 100. It was all cake after that.

Seriously, I was expecting more of a sharp recoil. It was a soft push very easy to shoot and absolutly no discomfort. i went through about 50 rounds. I should have been shooting this a long time ago.

honestly I think the 20 or is it 21 inch barrel is not that big of a deal in handling of the weapon. i guess time will tell.

this is a bone stock vepr right out of the box with a little oil. I thought i wasn't going to like the trigger but the two stage feel wasn't all that bad. I am sure with a little polishing it may be a keeper.

I had decent 2 some 3 inch groups out at 100yds with tulla 145 grain. Man i was impressed with this weapon.

Now my tendancy to never leave well enough alone i replaced the rear sights with krebs peep. Yes i have them on both my saigas so why not. I took one from one of my saigas and figured i would give it a go. I definitley could acquire the front sight post quicker and see it with greater calrity. due to the height of the peep i had to adjust the front sight and 3 turns down to get the impact on the bull.

groups opened up a bit as there really is no uber reliable way to lock in horizontal alignment. My eyes were getting a little tired at this poitn as well. Thats my excuse and i am sticking to it!!!

Anyway for the first outing i was super pleased. i am going to continue to switch between rear sights to see which one i like the best. I am may try to open up the OEM rear notch to allow more light for quicker accquistion.

i am feeling like a kid in the candy store for the first time. Great weapon and round.

Now to get it to 922r compliance for high cap mags, i may have to give up the stock trigger. correct me if i am wrong as all in need is the trigger group say the tapco g2 single hook and a new piston.

dam can't weight to get it back out to the range again.

the perma grin is casuing my teeth to hurt. LOL

  9. I had an AMD65 in years past. great little weapon, i found it loud but accurate for what it is. easy to carry, quick to deploy in cramp environment etc. I prefer to be able to shoulder the weapon and fire for more accuracy. still all in all its a fun weapon. never had an issue with mine. stay in touch and let us know what happens.
