  1. Hey guys I got a deal on a Citadel 1911. I hear nothing but good things about these pistols. Does any body know anything about these bad boys. And I dont know much at all about the beautiful 1911's but do the barrels have feed ramps built into them or is it something else to help feed the ammo? (kind of a weird question i guess).

They are not the same gun as a Kimber or Colt. The metalurgy is different. Cast vs forged steel. Lots of MIM parts. Talk with a gunsmith who builds race guns or enhance the 1911 guns to shoot the 460 Roland. They have info on their websites that will let you know. (http://www.clarkcustomguns.com/rowland.htm#faq)

That said, some are happy with them, but I would spend a little more money for a U.S. made 1911 made with better metalurgy.

  2. I have the same problem with my conversion. The trigger guard with the grip nut built in is quite expensive....IMO!

Finally found a thread with a template for cutting a new hole for the grip nut. Thinking I'm going to just buy the trigger guard with the grip nut built in to save the hassle. This one is turning out to be a bit more pricey than I had planned.
  3. My vote goes for the Galil. The Galil have a very good reputation with this supplier,( http://www.classicarms.us/ , Read this supplier's write up on these guns. I bought a gun from him and it was exactly as he described it. Personally, I like the rear peep sights mounted where you need them. Rear peep sights are a very desirable improvement to the AK design as they allow the shooter to better realize the accuracy of the AK rifle. Check out the high dollar Tromix AK rifles and you will see the rear peep sights and improved front sights similar to the Galil. (link) If you don't like the Galil rifle, I would dare say, you will probably be able to sell it for a nice profit in a few month.

Galil are low recoil, fast shooting and .223 ammo will always be available in the future, always. The future availability of 5.45 ammo is anybody guess.

  4. FWIK, Eastern block ammo and Western block ammo are designed with totally different ideology. Eastern block ammo, FMJ or HP is not engineered or designed to expand. The eastern block ammo has a large air pocket in the nose of the bullet. It upsets, tumbles and goes sideways, sometimes completely reversing. This is what gives the bullet it's effectiveness. It definitely "will not" drill straight through as western block FMJ ammo does. The HP is designated as such to make it a hunting bullet, thus making it legal. It is never the less, pretty much the same as the FMJ bullets. The Wolf MC hollow point is the bullets I would use, but the other eastern bloc hollow point or FMJ bullets will work also. They will tumble upon impact.

  5. So i'm sick of the leaf sights, i think i'm gonna start looking at ghost ring style setups, what would you guys recommend as a tuff sight system? Should i go with a beryl rail and stick on a iron rear sight with a hi vis front post, or replace the leaf with a mojo or williams setup? i even saw something neat from Ameriglo.....

IMO, one can spend a lot of time and funds looking for a better sighting system for the AK rifles. Most probably will not work as well as you want especially for the money spent. I think a red dot scope.(1) Ultimak with a aimpoint or (2) the new LaRue Red Dot mount w scope are the options that work very well, are fast sighting, and will probably not sit in a drawer or table later.

I would probably go with the LaRue Red dot mount.

  6. I have a place outside of town where I keep a few horses and goats. I caught two coyotes stalking a baby goat. I shot the two coyotes from about 40- 50 yards with the .223 and they just spun around in circles biting at the areas where the bullets entered. Eventually they ran off as fast as they came. Now, I had a friend who was hunting hogs with a SKS and I took notice of the wounds/damage the FMJ 7.62 ammo did to the hogs. I bought a AK 7.62 x 39 rifle and when the coyotes came around looking for baby goats, I shot two and they dropped like a rock on the spot. Both were dead when I reached them. That sold me on the 7.62 x39 cartridge. I hardly ever take the .223 to the farm. The 7.62 x 39 is equivalent to the 30/30 in terms of power. The eastern bloc ammo has a bullet with an large air pocket in the nose of the bullet that causes the base to upset, tumble and go sideways causing more tissue damage. I would dare say, even the 6.8 is not a whole bunch better than the 7.62x39 ammo and quite a bit more expensive.

  7. I installed a flat bullet guide, and I am having some trouble with the Saiga 10 round magazines feeding properly. The AK 30 round seems to feed ok. Is there some modification I can make to the Saiga 10 round magazines to work with the feed ramp?

Best to use the correct bullet guide, then modify the cheap magazines/mag catch/etc.

  8. I'd like to find the most effective sight upgrade for my stock SHTF saiga 7.62. My research has discovered peep sight, HK sights welded in place, etc. Can anyone give some adive and/or range report on the various options? Please include pics and links when possible.

    Thanks

When I first got my AK, I fooled around with peep sights for the Ak with little satifaction compared to the peep sights on my lever action rifles and my AR guns. In my opinion, the peep sights need to be close to the rear of the gun, and quite close to the eye to be most effective. The design of the Ak does not lead to this without extensive work on the receiver cover which has to be made stable but still able to be removed. You can buy peep sights on the receiver cover such as the following. linky-a or linky-b When one replaces the stock rear sight with an aftermarket peek sight, the rear peep sights are too far forward for the shooter to realize the benefits that peep sights can add to the gun. You have a large circle instead of the half/or opened square. One may as well keep the stock sights. That said, I think you can spend a "lot of money" on the various peek sights and get very little, if any, improvements in accuracy and faster target aquisation. The money is better spent on a Aimpoint red dot scope/or Aimpoint clones and the Ulitmak forward scope mount.(linky)

  9. Im curious how the J-Tac47 compares to a true 74-style brake(I.E., Krebs).

I had a Ak74 brake(part no. MMT-0012A) that Bushmaster uses on my Bushmaster AR-15 rifle...see this (link). I shot it without earplugs by mistake and I can say, it was awfully painfull! With the J-Tac the noise or blast "is not" directed towards the shooter or bystanders. In my opinon, the J-Tac brake also does a much better job of keeping the muzzle down.

  10. OK, like I mentioned in a earlier post of mine. My shooting and rifle owning experience has been limited to mostly bolt deer hunting guns fro the last 20 years. Mainly remington 700 series of various calibers.

So this being my first semi and first homeland defense type weapon I noticed a few things this weekend while shooting.

Mainly while trying to fire rather quickly and still be on target. Recoil is a huge problem for me. I'm a rather small person and it was quite a PITA trying to keep the muzzle down.

    So......

Having no experience with muzzle brakes, are they worth it ? Will it help me with my problem?

You can do a google search on "J-Tac47" and see all the info you get. Anyway, I have the J-Tac47 brake on my AK and it works as described on the website. Primary Weapons's link:check out the reviews and videos

  11. OK, On a whim, I stopped by a small gun shop, and saw a dimpled 7.62 Saiga. It is the only one out of about 10 or more. I never really cared about the Dimples on the Saiga rifles before, but I am beginning to feel as if I ran across something special. The gun store clerk said he never had a dimpled Saiga in the store before and did not know what dimples were until I pointed it out. I am just wondering if this is a good find that I should jump on, because they are so rare? It is priced the same as the other Saiga rifles. Can some explain the history of these dimpled Saiga?

  12. Right now i have a stock Saiga ak47 and i have purchased a reddot that i want to add onto it but i am trying to figure out the best type of scope mount to get

the 3 i am look at are

    http://cgi.ebay.com/SAIGA-SPORTING-RIFLE-T...7QQcmdZViewItem

    http://cgi.ebay.com/WEAVER-RAIL-SCOPE-MOUN...7QQcmdZViewItem

    http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Low-rise-POSP-SIDE...1QQcmdZViewItem

i would like to get the cheapest which is the top stock replacement but i really like the ability to easily remove the reddot and possibly use both the reddot and iron sights.. any input?

IMO, You can spend a lot of time and money trying the various mounts for the AK rifle and not be satisfied with the results. One ends up spending money for parts that just sit in a corner and not used as they simply don't work well with an AK rifle's design. The AK design is not as easy to scope as a bolt action rifle or even a M4-AR. The top cover is too loose to hold a zero unless you have it worked on. The side mounts sit way too high over the bore of the barrel and sometimes are not even centered. Granted, some side mounts are better than others. Of course this is my opinion/my experiences. I would recommend the Ulitmak scout mount and and a Aimpoint or a good Aimpoint clone. I do not know of hardly anyone that is unhappy with the Ultimak/aimpoint combination. The Ultimak/aimpoint combination is the only mounting system for the AK that is low enough to allow you to co-witness the red dot with the iron sights.

  13. Most likely it has it. But to make sure, just strip it down as if you were gonna clean it, then look inside the receiver. Look where the trigger plate is now, you should see the new trigger hole right there. I don't have a pic, but you get the idea. As far as the conversion, go for it. Once you do it, you will have one of those "That was easier than I thought it was gonna be" moments, I know I did after I did mine.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

+1----exactly what to do. Your gun more than likely has the hole already there. Everything is hidded by the plate. There is a good conversion deal going on here: (link)

  14. IMO, that scout mounts sits way too high on the rifle. The Ultimak scout mount sits much lower and you still have use of the sights. The Ulitmak is probably the lowest mount for the AK rifle. Just my 2cents cause you can spend a lot time and money on aftermarket sights for the AK and not get it right.
