  1. I really love my PSL, and it's my go-to rifle if I don't know what I want to do that day, whether messing around or heading to the range.

Always fun when you can plop down with an oversized AK and actually beat the accuracy or a lot of other rifles out there. I just evened up the crown on mine, and it'll out-shoot me regardless of the range.

Was kind of hard to sight in because with a 25 yard zero it was about a foot and a half high at 100.

I think it's an attractive looking rifle as well. Managed to get the action so flawlessly smooth I still have trouble believing it's an oversized AK. That being said, if I had $2000 or $2500 and could find a tigr I'd snatch it in a heartbeat even if I was eating ketchup and bread for a few months. For now though, I don't believe there's a functional difference, I just want an Izhmash in x54r.

    Nice stick ,CAT :killer:

  2. haha yeah

ok guys well I had someone contact me on a PSL with 10 mags, all the accessories and a hard case for 700 shipped.

Or I can get a kit locally for 550 with a nodak receiver ( unsure if its a flat or bent ) unsure if it comes with the scope.

If I got he parts kit route, Im going to try and get it a tad lower... I also have someone locally that has built AKs before, and he is going to help me without charge!!!

Original Rom. PSL +10 mags, for 700$? make sure you buy it ,or I will :super:

Very hard to find original PSL this days.

  3. Yeah, he will ! His other Grandpa is also coming. Us two old farts are like night and day in personality, but we get along great, so the trip will be a really good time for us as well as a learning experience for the kid.

Here's a couple of photos from previous visits to the area-

  4. Is it necessary to cut the shroud all the way to the FSB? All of the pictures I have seen show the threads start a little more than half way.

If you want to tread a barrel and keep FSB, cut vertically around the barrel with the drimmel

    cut.jpg

Not necessary, but I didnt know if it would be enough space for a thread, was more then enough.

I drimmel on the both sights as well

    cut-2.jpg

I think you saw the ones ,when you move FSB down, what I did ,removed part on the front of FSB

go slow and use tape for FSB and hammer

  5. We 'bargained a bit' ! to get that rate. I asked for references, as I don't know these folks at all. They sent me a list, and I got 3 responses from the 7 I contacted. One guy is a Cmd Sgt Major, who's word I will take as gospel. He gave me a good run-down on the routine of the hunting days...so we signed up.

A side benefit, The ranch is located about 20 miles from the SHINER brewery !! Been there, took the tour, and enjoyed the free beerS that come with it ! Also near Lockhart, Luling and other MAJOR BBQ locations, in the heart of the Texas BBQ belt ! We have visited the area many times as our Czech family heritage stems from that area. So in addition to a new experience in hunting hogs, we get to introduce my grandson to Kolache, BBQ and Other Texas sights and sounds.

I will post a trip report after the fact, in the correct forum. Since Indiana doesn't allow .223, 7.62x39, or .308 for hunting, I have been reluctant to buy a Saiga in those calibers...but if we like this hunt, I think a .308 will be on my list shortly.

Damn ,pig hunting, beer and BBQ sign me up :super:

P.S your grandson will tell stories about this trip to his kids, I can bet on it

  6. Hey...No Problem, wait a little while and NorCal will be moving your way anyway !!!

Lately it seems that hogs have been getting a lot of attention in the hunting (and media) world. The rate of growth of the population has exploded beyond the needs for any seasons and limits in some areas (Texas, for one). Here in Indiana there are fewer, by far, but the spread north is happening.

BTW our hunt is $500 for 2 adults - 3 days-2 nights, meals and lodging included, 2 hogs per hunter and skinning and quartering and cooling the hogs is $30 each. The Grandson gets in for another $100, so it looks like the biggest single cost will be the damn Gas back and forth from Louisville to the San Antonio area...about 2100 mile R/T. :dollar::dollar:

If anyone else has any tales of hog hunting, I hope you'll share them. I am trying to learn all I can before the hunt.

You have a great deal,Here its usually, $300 for first hog ,$150 for the second and $75 per night lodging,I am not sure about skinning.

    Have fun :killer:

  7. I hunt with PSL, its a little heavy to carry around,so its my blind/treestand gun.Making it shorter wont make it a "brush" gun , brake has a purpose as Zen mentioned it reduces muzzle blast and recoil too. Have you shot it before cutting the barrel? It would be interesting to hear if you fill the difference

  8. Where is your buddy located?

I sign any waiver for my safety on his property, and volunteer my time, rifle(s) and ammo to eradicate as many as I can for him  I'll even bring him a cold 12 pack.

    YUM!

Oh, and what Chile said!

I'll ask him and if he will be ok with that ,I don't see any problem ,if you can get to NorCal :super:

  9. Great to see your Hog...and the sausage too !! NICE JOB.

We are headed to Texas in June for a 3 day-2 nite Pig hunt. It isn't free, but it is pretty reasonable. I will be using my Saiga-12 ga. for the primary weapon, my friend will have a Marlin Levergun 44 magnum, and the Grandson will have a 20 ga shotgun with slugs also. We hope to take two hogs apiece (the limit without paying extra. A 60 yard shot like yours would be just about right for me. We'll be in blinds at night and walking (a little) during the day.

That hog you got looks like just the right size for a 'meat on the table' pig.

They should pay you,its a disaster aria in Texas ,the wild pig situation is out of control over there. Saiga12 will do just fine, dont stop shooting until its down, and it would be great to have a trained dog,its a bitch to look for them if they wounded.

Good luck to you and your grandson :killer:

  10. Part of the question is how much accuracy do you get for the money vs cool factor. Some guys only count the dollar to MOA ratio and if that's what matters get the PSL for sure, it's much cheaper and will perform very similarly.

If you really want an SVD though, Tiger's and NDM86's are fantastic rifles. There's really nothing else out there like them and they are (IMO) much nicer to shoot than PSL's. Trigger pull is very smooth and light, the stock is easier to get used to than the PSL and there's a big optical quality difference in the PSO-1M2 on the Tiger vs the LPS/TIP2 on the PSL.

Out of the box I think Tiger's and NDM's are going to be more consistent shooters (I've never heard anyone say they got a lemon), PSL's on the other hand can suffer luck of the draw like any kit build...some are great and some aren't. Like I said in PM my TGI was a dog and could never hold better than 4 MOA but at the Behind Lines class Marco Vorobiev's PSL was a real 1 MOA shooter.

Safest bet IMO is to go for the PSL first and see how you like the combloc style DMR. It's not as comfortable as the Tiger or NDM but will give you an idea of how they operate, later you can sell it and get most of your money back at least, then buy a Tiger if the mood strikes you.

Having owned both, for me the argument is more like an underfolder vs a side folding stock AK...both will basically perform the same but to me the underfolder is not as nice as the side folder, if that makes sense.

Another thing I forgot to mention is an NDM86 in 308/7.62x51. It's a true sub MOA shooter, my old one did .74 MOA using Winchester Ballistic Silvertips in 168gr and did 1 MOA without any effort on my part. The nice thing is they are generally much cheaper than 54R versions but in the last few years they have become really hard to find for some reason.

With the 308 version you need to be careful about what ammo you use though, the SVD action is violent and I had continual problems with pierced primers liquifying and jamming the firing pin because Western commerical primers are really soft. I sent it to PA Distributing and Bill rounded the FP tip and that was a huge improvement. CCI 200 primers are much harder than many 308 primers on the market, when I handloaded for my 54R I never had a single pierced primer and had not had the work done to the FP on it.

Speaking of 54R again, if you get into handloading you can really can work up a load that will shoot sub MOA, at least for less than 400-500 yards. I used .311 Speer 150gr flat tail bullets and shot a .93" at 100 yards, but the flat tails don't do as well at longer ranges. Still, there is room to cook something up that will get the most out of the SVD design which is truly capable of sub MOA performance. It just needs a decent shooter and the right ammo.

+1 on what Zen is saying, I have PSL, love it, accurate enough, fun gun to shoot 7.62X54R light ball is great round and cheap too,but if I would have more money to spent on my toys I would definitely go with Dragunov/Tigr, Different rifle better quality

  11. Congratulations!! Very nice hog, man I could get into some sausage, looks like there is alot there.

Yep,They multiply like rats, smart and dangeraus, my buddy's property is overrun by 200+ wild pigs and its no way he can get rid off them

Nice rifle,I hate to tell you Tommy, this thingi on the dustcover wont work.Side rails on AKs is for a reason, the only part on AK that is not moving when firing.Get the posp scope 100$ and you wont have any problems of holding 0.

  13. Atak:thats awesome, great trophy and tell your girl i said great shot.i would be willing to bet that if a "situation" would happen that she would not become a statistic and rather a survivior.good job to you both.

Thanks Buzz . Rick, sorry for a little hijacking, back to the 21" barrel PSL :killer:

  14. Shortening the barrel doesn't make it a WASR10.. it's still a PSL. I have no idea what your getting at. It still shoots 54r which is different.. and cheaper. It still has elongated internals.. It's a different gun. Cutting a few inches off it doesn't put it in the WASR10 camp.

    Looks cool to me!

Sure, looks cool but PSL is 2" MOA 1.5" with ammo that she likes , so with short barrel is what, 3-4, common its a waist of the rifle. this why I am saying if you just want to have fun of shooting cans buy WASR,but if you want to use it for lets say hunting,or shoot 300-700 yards

the reason why they made this AK on steroids in a first place, leave the barrel.

    Just my humble opinion
