  1. Been expectign this from day one of the Ukranian debacle.  Made sure I had Izmash made 5.45x39 rifle and a supply of 7N6 before all this came to a boil. Already had a Izmash 7.62x39 rifle and stack of ammo for it.  I just remember all those nay sayers saying it will never happen. Yeah, right.... Saw this one coming from light years out.

BTW, everyone get their Mosin Nagants yet? I am sure they will be next.

  2. Been expecting this.  One reason I scrambled to get a SGL-31 when all this Ukrainian BS started. Personally, I am on Russia's side in this, historically the Ukrainians were Nazi supporters who aided Hitler and are know to have major Neo-Nazi movement going (which is what started this whole thing). I am pretty sure it was the Ukranians military who shot down the plane as it helps them get support from the west. Nothing we need to get mixed up with.

Next question, have enough ammo stacked up?

  3. BTW, it is illegal to manufacture SBRs in WA state except for military, LEO or export.  If you decide to get one you have to use an out of state manufacturer and get it transferred here.  I am on the fence on this one, have several candidates like an AR pistol, AMD-65 and a VZ-61 Scorpion pistol I would like to SBR, just not sure it is worth the hassle.

  4. You think you have it bad... The neighbor across the street has five, count them, five daughters.  Every year I get inundated by them asking me to buy their calorie filled wares.  And even worse, two doors down is another neighbor with a Girl Scout daughter too.  Now to top it all off a family just moved in next to me on the other side with two more girls.  WHAT IN THE WORLD AM I GOING TO DO NOW???what.gif

  5.

    .

It should only count magazine fed pistols, that fully enclose the magazines within the grip. It should only count simple blowback actions.

Most pistols are NOT simple blowback actions. Due to high pressures most pistols use some sort of locking mechanism, only low powered rounds like .22LR, .25 ACP, .32 ACP, . 380 and 9x18 Mak use simple blowback. Your argument falls apart right there then.  I do however agree with you that this ban is arbitrary, opportunistic and just plain sucks.

  6. Back about 30+ years ago, when congress was still a little bit educated in science compared to our present congress, the scientific research funding requests had to be written at a 6th grade level.  I shudder to think what it is like now.  I know this as we were required to take classes in "technical writting" in our degree program at a science and engineering university (NMIMT) so we could dumb down technical papers and proposals for this target audience. This is why the US is so backwards and behind in general STEM knowledge, our government will not make a requirement to teach it and allows the fundemental religious right to include such hogwash as "intelligent design" into our schools.  Further, while the rest of the world uses the SI or metric system, we are still using the outdated, archaic English system. Also the invasion of pseudoscience programming on TV to channels that actually were originally about science and technology (Science Channel, Discovery Channel, etc.) propagates the ignorance, superstition and fear of science, math and technology in our society.

  7. It means a bunch of stuff to me:

    1) Specifically, the name of the picture I use as my avatar (the Czechoslovakian Soviet Republic Coat of Arms.)

It was NEVER the Czechoslovakian SOVIET Republic.  I am very offended that you said that. It was Ceskoslovenska Socialisticka Republika (Czechoslovakian Socialist Republic).  Never was Soviet, just a mamber of the Warsaw pact. I ought to know, I was born there and saw the tanks in 1968 too.

As to my screen name, ...think about it....

  8. Well I walked in the lgs today and they had a Sig 556R on the wall. Used in vg condition at a decent price. It even had the MI front sight. So I bought it along with an Eotech 517. Guess the Tavor waits.

Good decision on your part.  I have had a chance to inspect/handle a couple of Tavors and for my part, I am NOT impressed. The supposed ergonomics are just not there for me.  The lenght of pull seems just a tad too long.  Also the forward hand quard is awkward, get worse if you try the supported 5 points of contact hold as recomended by the IDF. Sorry, will stick to standard AR-15s, SIG 55x platform (have 551-A1 and 556R) and AKs.  BTW, it is not the bullpup thing, I have a nice .308 bullpup consiting of a Springfield M1A in a Juggernaught Rogue chassis which I love.

  9. Just got myself an SGL-31-61 5.45x39 Saiga build.  Are they considered Saiga or is this area only for purists?  Decided to drop the hammer on it as any and all real Russian AKs will soon be under iport restrictions I fear.  Came with one 30 round circle 10 mag and paperwork (manual, factory certificate, etc.)  Will be topping it off with Tapco 249 grip and a Midwest Industries 30mm scope mount with Vortex Strikefire scope. Might switch out the hand guard for a Midwest Industry smooth modular extended. Anyway, expect these to beceom unobtainium soon. Made/imported by FIME group out of Las Vegas, base rifle was a Saiga.

  10. From what I have seen/heard the ATF has banned all MilSurp ammo as being "Armor Piercing". Supposedly some moron made a 5.45x39mm pistol and told the government. The rumor has been confirmed from several sources, including a posted copy of the ATF letter.  Well, I have spam cans stacked high so this will not affect me, short of a war here in the states that is. NRA been getting my  money for the past decade, have no more to give at this moment.

  11. Went and picked up my M1 Garand yesterday. I had left it to be rebarreled and fitted with new wood a month ago. Picked it up a year ago and but was not sure it needed a rebuild. Finally I asked the local riflesmith, one of the few old school ones left in the area, what he thought. He is a retired marine sniper and will not work on any semi-autos unless they are M1 or M1A/M14 models, most of his work is custom bolt guns. Anyway, it looks like new to me. If I get lucky and the weather hold I may try shooting it next week. I am just giddy, love weapons made of wood and steel.

  12. Well, one of the reasons I want to trade in the SCAR is that I am beginning to have doubts as to the solidity of the folding stock. I want to go the SGL-31 route and buy a fixed stock version. Two, I hate the little detent pin one has to push to get at the SCAR piston, even with the suggested tool it does not push in easily. The SCAR is mag finicky only takes GI magazines as a basic rule, Lancer L5 magazines and PMags do not work properly in it and I do not want to be buying EMags for just one system. Also found out from a army buddy who has close contacts with the SOCOM community that the SCAR eats optics, especially red dot scopes, due to recoil impulses of the bolt carrier group and piston set up. Supposedly FNH has done a fix for SOCOM but I doubt I am eligible for the upgrade being a civilian puke now. Further there is parts availability and serviceability, parts for an AK are easier to find and install.

Not interested in the SCAR 17 at all, especially as it take expensive proprietary magazines and the above concerns as to parts and such. I bought the SCAR on a lark but now am not as impressed as I was once. Just explaining why I am considering the switch. My gun safe is pretty full do this would make space for the new gun too. I think I have made up my mind to get rid of the SCAR, the question is to trade it or sell it to someone in a private sale. I have done some upgrades, like installing an AAC 18T Blackout so it's suppressor ready. I guess it will depend on the deal I can get for it.

  13. I have a SCAR-16S that I am considering getting rid of. I am interested in hearing if I should go pick up a SGL-31 and get some cash back on the SCAR or if I should keep the SCAR. I am not entirely happy with the gas system take down and cleaning on the SCAR and would probably prefer the straight forward manual of arms of the Saiga. I have plenty of other 5.56 platforms so I do not really need the SCAR. Is there a good reason to keep the SCAR vs getting a 5.45x39 platform and some change?

  14. Well, one of the reasons I buy the US made polymer mags is 922r issues. I have a custom AK built out on an AMD-65 kit (short barrel and all) which I want to make sure has a surplus of 922r parts. Once SHTF I won't care about 922r as much and I will go with what I have on hand. The weird thing about the US polymer mags is they are more reliable then some of the surplus steel I have. Then again, I am not running my guns especially hard like some here do.

  15. I have gone both routes. I have a ton of cheap surplus steel that I am reconditioning with new springs and K var compliance followers plus base plates. I also have bought a goodly amount of polymer. The problem is that if SHTF or there is another ban do you have enough to get you through the rest of your life? I do not think any equipment is combat losable if you have no further supply and a long dark tunnel ahead. Carry a dump pouch, use it and you will not have to worry about running out.

  16. So what do you guys use to lube your Saigas? Normally I would use CLP or LSA but I have a tub of lithium wheel bearing grease that costs lots less and seems to get the job done. I know, it should be surplus grease from T-34 tank gear boxes but that stuff is hard to find right now. I lube the areas where motion exists, such as bolt lugs and recesses the bolt carrier cam area and the rails on which the bolt cycles. Any place I missed? Just asking as I may find some new wrinkles I have not thought of.

  17. If you can't find any U.S. markings on it, just treat it as a foreign made pistol grip. Just make sure you have enough compliance parts.

Hell chevyman, I mean drilling a hole in a brush from a cheap cleaning kit and tying a string to it. Maybe a tiny bottle of hoppes#9. Something silly like that could work very well in a pinch. Especially since I dont have a cleaning rod. With a little weight on the end of the string, I think it would work beutifully.

QUESTION ANSWERED: I contacted a Mako rep and she said all mako products are made in Isreal, by FAB defense. Also she said there are Chinese knock offs, I dont really care which, the thing is solid as a rock and feels real nice in my hand. Even if its chinese, I still got a good deal. Its way nicer and better made than the tapco SAW grip im using now.

The brush idea is great. good thinking. It would be great for a quick scrub through when you arent able to do a thorough cleaning. And I agree, the tapco grips are just cheap and feel cheap.

Funny, I like the Tapco M249 grips much more then the MAKO and such. Either is an improvement over original AK grips though.

  18. OK, managed to get some trigger time today after all. Made sure I ran some CLP and boresnake through it first and lubed the bolt group and rails with some automotive bearing grease. It was mixed hazy/sunny sky with some clouds and a temp in the high 40s to mid 50s when I got to the range around 14:30 local. I had two other guns with me as I wanted to play with some accessories I recently mounted on them.

First of all, the slight wiggle did not affect things at all, I was worried needlessly. The rifle shot 100 percent and works with US PALM and ProMag AK mags with 100% reliability. Ammo used was some 123 gr FMJ Barnaul Silver Bear I had lying around and then Wolf 122gr JHP lacquer coated. I used a 50 yard sight in so as to get basic on paper BSZ. The sights shot a bit left for me but centered out easy enough with my handy sight adjustment tool. Took some shots at a steel man silhouette out at 200 yards and was doing a pretty good job of banging it if I took my time on the trigger. The Arsenal two stage trigger sucks rock, crunchy and heavy let off after a light first stage. I think my first mods will be a TAPCO M249 pistol grip and a TAPCO trigger set, probably two hook as the receiver should be easy to mod. Maybe an UltiMak mount and a Vortex Spark red dot to finish it off.

Groups were not impressive, probably around 2" at 50 yards off of cement bench and sand bags (Still it was a lot better then my SIG 556 Classic can do with or without a scope, do not waste time and money on SIG 556). Could have been my not being used to the trigger. Still, it would ruin your day at 100 yards and make you hug the ground at 200. Recoil was a a lot milder then the WASR 10 with slant break I used to own. Post range clean up was the standard simplicity by itself, but at least I did not use a knotted rope and diesel fuel. I will have to take the gun by itself next time and spend quality time instead of juggling three guns in one afternoon like I did today. I should try it with a scope too if I can get one mounted. Altogether I am satisfied for the time being and will work on wringing more accuracy out it.
