  1. BTW, the cheap WASR-10 furniture looks great if you sand it a little, hit is with cherry stain and then finish it with Tung oil. Has nice deep color, shows the grain well and looks really good in the light.

I do wish folk's would get off the "cheap furniture" train. The only thing "cheap" about the WASR furniture is that it's not been finished whatsoever.

It is a lamimated beech wood military stock set, just waiting for you to get creative.

"Cheap furniture" would be made of pine or that sh*t that they make out of glue and sawdust.

In my case it WAS cheaply finished. Not saying it was wrong wood and such but obviously cast off ex-military stuff with the finish flaking off in 1" square sections. I cut off the idiotic front pistol grip with a band saw, stripped the finish off and sanded it smooth. Then I did refinish job. The buttstock was OK and not screwed up but the hand guards, both upper and lower, needed complete refinish job to get rid of the garbage that was there. Looks good now, but it was garbage when I got it. Only reason I got it is I wanted another AK and knew I could fix it up with a little love. :D

  2. You know guys, you can buy a years worth of rice, flour, legumes and vegetable oil for the cost of a Saiga carbine, right?

There is no reason why anyone on this forum shouldn't have a year's worth of at least the 3rd world dietary staples I mentioned above and much more for that matter.Buy 20lbs of rice and beans per week and a gallon of vegetable oil per month until you have an adequate supply then start working on tinned meats, powdered milk, supplements, canned goods.

If just you packed a lunch everyday and spent the money you saved from not buying fast food on your lunch break you could have enough food to weather a few years of famine in a year.

I have 50 large bags of rice(1000lbs),42 bags of various beans(420lbs),7 bags of salt(175lbs),20 boxes of powdered milk(88lbs),18 bags of tortilla flour(450lbs), and 15 1 gallon jugs of vegetable oil in my larder. That's over 2000lbs dry weight yielding 4000lbs cooked weight, which is 2500 days worth of food on sustainable rationing for 4 adults and 2 kids.

That's almost 7 years worth of food and I sold an M1A Match package and a Kimber CDP with all of the associated mags, optics, doodads to buy it all.

If you can't come up with a year's worth of staple foods to live off before the S hits the F then you are already in a survival crisis due to poverty.

Great. How are you set for potable water? Remember, local water supplies will be disrupted and possibly contaminated. Dry food is good, but you still need water to cook it. I do get you point though. I figure I got a bunch of canned goods, always restocking those as we use them and some dry goods too. Bought a bunch of Mountain House in the big cans for pennies a few years ago, they are good for at least a decade. If I run out I can always turn to feral man's favorite pastime, pillaging. Being nice and civilized is one thing but here we are talking survival and everything is fair game. Obviously this is a last choice alternative though.

How are you on basic knowledge and hand tools? Do you know how to make or repair things once Lowe's is out of business and your electric drill can't get juice? Those are thing one needs to stock too. A good set of old, and I mean OLD (1800s), Brittanicas has so much practical knowledge in it you could rebuild civilization with it.

  3. Tung oil? Never thought of that, how does it hold up?

Tung oil has been a standard for stock finishing for years. You can always refinish if it wears. I did about eight coats on mine. Be careful though it can bubble if not applied right and it tends to get sticky as it starts to dry. Have not tested hard wear use, I treat all of my guns well, even AKs. When dry it is very water proof and looks real good. Here is a link to more info.

  4. Haven't had one in years. Quit smoking in 92. I do miss my pipe sometimes though.

The best cigar I ever had was in college right after big chilli breakfast cooked illegally in the dorms. One of the guys there was Italian and brought out an espresso maker (one of the old fashioned kind you used on a stove top) and made espresso. I got my highly illegal (dry campus) bottle of Courvosier cognac for the coffee. We then got a couple of cheapo cigars (not sure what they were) and went out with our cognac laced espresso to smoke and drink. It was snowing, that soft clean snow you only get in the south west areas of the US. It was a total sensory overload, the coffee with cognac, the cigar and the snow blown fresh air combined with a biting cold. Best start to a morning I ever had.

  5. I bought a S&W M&P 15T a year or so ago. It came with the folding front BUIS mounted on the free float rail and a foldign BUIS on the receiver rail. Turned out the rail and barrel are not anywhere near aligned, had to crank the rear windage half way over to get on target at 25 yards. Did some thinking and traded the folding BUIS in for a YHM folding front sigh tower and rear BUIS. The folding tower attached great just behind the flash hider and with a little tweaking of the tilt got it dead on without playing with rear windage. Now my concern is that the folding front sight tower is held on by 4 screws (yeah I loctited them) and they may work loose.

Should I replace the folding tower with a standard F marked front or just keep my set up as is? It would mean having to get the barrel profile drilled to get the retaining pins in. I am pretty sure I can talk a local shop into doing it for me, but what if they put it on at a cant? Right now I got it just right and if the fixed tower is canted it can not be corrected easily. Any opinions? And before everyone says get and AK or get a Saiga I already have both.

  6. It sounds like the leaf spring (3 fingered) is not locking into the little slot that keeps it in place. It is held there by the mainspring housing. Take the main spring housing off and then put in making use the bottom is locked into that little cut out.

    HTH!

What he said. Be careful, the leaf spring likes to move when you put the mainspring housing back in sometimes, make sure the little tongue of the spring is in the slot in the frame. I usually make sure the leaf spring is properly aligned and just slide the mainspring housing just far enough to hold it in place. Then I make sure the hammer strut is going into the proper hole in the mainspring housing while sliding it further up. Use a punch to hold the mainspring housing in place and test for function, then finally place the final pin in. When testing make sure you are blocking the hammer so it does not hit your frame, that would be B A D.

  7. I have about a year of food stocked up and am getting ready to start raising rabbits. I all you had to eat was breeding rabbits and were willing to eat their brains then you would not slowly starve to death. They are that rich in nutrients. Gotta eat the brain though. One buck and a couple of does will provide a lot of meat. Grow a garden to feed them and their very low maintenance.

I had heard that there were documented cases of people starving to death from eating nothing but rabbits, but they probably didn't eat the brains I guess.

    BraiiiinnnnSSSSS. BraiiiiinnnnSSS!!! BRAIIIINNNNNNSSSSSS!

  8. I have had some good luck with ProMag AK mags. They are US made and decently made, no issues so far with any of the 7.62x39 30 rounders I bought. Based on that I just got some ProMag AK74 mags in 5.45x39, they also look like a quality product, need to range test them. I have not heard much about the new Tapco Mags. Most of my mags are surplus East German of Hungarian mags with K-Var US made followers and baseplates.

To the Honorable Walter B. Jones:

    (3rd District of North Carolina)

    Good day to you sir.

My reason for contacting you is that I am highly concerned with H.R. 45 that was introduced on January 6, 2009. But first I'd like to share a little background information about me.

I'm XX years old, born and raised in Xxxxxxx, California. I married a beautiful lady and fellow Christian whom I met in elementary school and have two beautiful children. I enlisted into the Marine Corps in 2000 and have spent the past 8 plus years serving in the United States Marine Corps and plan to retire after 20 years of faithful, honorable service to this great nation.

The reason for my concern of H.R. 45 is that there are already several laws on the books that effect only to those law abiding citizens that legally purchase, fill out the paper work and follow the letter of the law. There will always be the illegal transfer, blackmarket deal or whatever you want to call it due to the fact that the only people your restricting from owning weapons are those that follow the law. If you look at the states that allow concealed carry, such as the great state of North Carolina, you will see that our crime rate is much lower that that of restrictive states. It has been stated time and time again that the criminal in states with a concealed carry law are weary of John Q Citizen because they do not know if he is armed. Infringement of the 2nd Amendment from the public even further will only cause further scrutiny, concern and doubt on the Congress and our Government from the people.

You and I both swore an oath to the people of this great nation and that was, "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God." That would include the 2nd Amendment, luckly the 1st Amendment enables me to voice my concern.

I ask you sir to make any influence over H.R. 45 you can, that you rebuke this Bill introduced to the 111th Congress and bring forth the true meaning of "Shall not be Infringed!"

    Respectfully,

    Mr Xxxxxxx X Xxxxxxx

Good letter but I think you mean to use "wary" instead of "weary". Wary means watchful, weary means tired.

  10. So far I have owned a Century STG-58 type FAL Sporter, a SAR-1, a WASR-10 and a (still being upgraded) L1A1 FAL Sporter built on a "Made in Canada" Argentine receiver. I have had zero problems with them, all functioned well. I am not saying all of their guns work as well, but these are good. Maybe I dodged the bullet too.

  11. BTW, on another note, it was recently reported that 20% of the US population is not illiterate. Not functionally illiterate, but illiterate. That will do a lot to slow economic recovery when 1 in 5 in this country can't read.

Where did you get this info? A quick google search yielded 2 sources citing 1 in 7 illiteracy. To me, even that is unbelievable with the exception of perhaps Mexican illegals diluting the literacy rate. Then again, I've never had much experience with the really dirty dirty inner city sections of the U.S.

Saw it on the news, a quick blurb of filler on one of the major programs a couple of day's ago. Wife did do a search to confirm it and it took digging. Highest rates in CA and FL (no surprise there). Next highest were TX and DC (guess all the legislators are keeping the rate down there, lol). I have no doubt the rates are true from a casual inspection of the population at large. I was depressed when in HS I was 99th national percentile and English was my second language. I figure rates could have only gone down since then.
