  1. It seems like in the last year or so there has been some seriously fervent purchasing of firearms on the part of myself and a lot of other people I know or encounter. This has led me to question the actual reasons and manner in which this taking place, if y'all follow me. At the gun show, the atmosphere is one of impending doom, which I have yet to decide whether I agree or not. For example in November, I purchased a bulk amount of ammunition based on the fact that I had heard that prices for ammo, particularly steel case 7.62 short would be rising exponentially in January. Well, it's near the middle of March now, and I haven't really noticed a significant difference. But then again, it could be a trickle down effect.

Similarly, I recently ran out and bought a Saiga 12, which I totally intended to purchase with my economic stimulus check, based on the impression that I may or may not be able to get one by the time Uncle Sam gets me my check. This decision was based on a conversation I had with a guy that wanted $900 for a 18" S12 with a folding stock, who told me that he had ordered 100, and only received 25, and that he may or may not get some more this summer. After I talked to him I got in touch with Nathan at MAA, and he said he would have some in in the middle of this month, but the price he quoted me was still a bit more than I wanted to pay. I ended up getting what I perceive to be a decent deal from a local guy, but was still a little more than I anticipated paying, but whatever, I've got the gun now.

I guess what I'm getting at is there seems to be this atmosphere permeating the gun sub-culture is that we are in the grips of some sort of impending catastrophe, and we have to do (read: purchase) everything we can while we still have the chance. Now I'm not going to sit here and say that the Democrats don't have gun control on their agenda, and that they won't get elected in the fall. But then again, one party hasn't even chosen their candidate, and the rhetoric involving gun control hasn't been too terribly strong on either side. (I say this because I am familiar with McCain's stance on gun control). I'm just starting to wonder if I'm being made to think that something horrible is about to happen and that I need to spend alot of money NOW, by the industry that stands to benefit from it, the gun manufacturers.

Am I reading too far into this whole thing, or do I have a legitimate point? Opinions please.

  2. look at it this way... any one of us that has the OEM stock left over could get that and put the OEM stock back on it...

but it is still damn ugly as is...

Yeah, but you'd be paying $500 bucks for a gun that you could get for less than $300....

  3. where is this bad ass pawn shop that has all the saigas? all the pawn shops here in vegas have mosberg and lorkin .25's and chit like that.

Dude, right down the street from my place. The guy that runs the place is pretty awesome, he'll accept stuff with his FFL for free, and if you want to order something out of, say, Centerfire, he just charges you 10% over what they charge, which I think is totally reasonable. But for stuff off of gunbroker he doesn't charge you a dime.

One time my kel-tec su16 jammed up on me and I couldn't get the offending shell out, so I took it to him. He fixed it, then pulled a mag off a gun on the shelf, dug through a coffee can of bullets, pulled out a couple of .223, said "fire in the hole," and took the thing in the back of the store and shot it off. It was awesome. All these people in the store were ducking for cover.

  4. I bought a saiga .308 from him a couple of months ago, but I think I got a decent deal. $430 shipped with a 25 round mag, ended up being about $20 cheaper than the guy at the pawnshop wanted for one with a factory mag. This was before I found this forum, of course.

But then the guy at the pawn shop hooked it up on a S12 last week cheaper than I could find anywhere, so it's all good.

  5. I would take the dust cover off when you experience this FTF (failure to fire) and look to make sure the hammer is cocked and the safety is not interfering with the trigger. Plus you might see some other bizarre interference with the trigger.

I know that this is not polite, but: MAKE DAMN SURE THAT THE GUN IS POINTED IN A SAFE DIRECTION AND IS HELD FIRMLY WHEN REMOVING THE DUST COVER. REMEMBER: IT IS LOADED.

I did that, and it looks like the trigger is getting hung up on the safety bar. (Sorry, I don't know the technical term for this, kinda new at the whole gun customizing thing. ) Is there a fix? We were talking about just dremelling out the spot where it was catching, but I don't know if that's a great idea.

  6. HAHA, that's the guy that wanted to sell me a S12 with a folding stock for $900.

He did bust out some "Well, I ordered 100 of those things and only received 25, and now I only have 2 left. I may get some more around the middle of the summer, I may not."

    Whatever dude.

  7. I have a (seemingly) similar problem with my new S12. It's not a feeding issue, it's more of a trigger issue, I think.

I took it out to shoot for the first time on sunday, put about 15 rounds through it, and it worked fine. But then it started acting up. Every time I put a round through it, it acted like the safety was on. The shell would feed fine, but the trigger wouldn't pull, and I would have to pop the magazine out, manually rack the bolt to eject the shell, pop the mag back in, and rack the bolt again. It would fire one, and then repeat the same aforementioned phenomenon.

Any ideas? I was shooting remington 2 3/4 dove shot, BTW.

  8. A guy at a place called sparta guns and ammo in NC quoted me $900 for a S12 with a folding stock on it. He said that they were supposed to get some more in towards the end of summer, but that he couldn't make any promises, hence the price.

I talked to the guy at my local pawn shop and he told me he could get one for mid $400's. I ended up walking out of the store with the thing for $475. This is just an example of the wide discrepancies concerning hear-say and actuality.

I have a theory about the frenzied gun purchasing going on right now, but that's a different topic for a different thread.

  9. I'm surprised there's not more car guys, but I guess this is a relatively new thread. It seems like car guy are always into guns and vice versa.

I'm into cars, up until this point mostly import cars, but with the trouble I've been having making my turbo sentra run right, I'm about to the point where I want to buy an early 70's chevelle and throw a big block in it. I've also always been a fan of the SS camaros. LS1 is the shit.

  10. I use a Barska 3X9X42 IR scope on a UTG quick detach rail mount, and get 3/4 inch groups with Remington ammo.

This Barska scope is less than $100 on Sportsman's guide.

    Hope this helps, Jimba

I was looking at one of those barksa's in the sportsman's guide and wondering about the quality. I saw that 3-9X for around $40, IIRC.

  11. I got a POSP 6x24 scope and it worked out good for me.

    I want that!!!!

    DROOL!!!!

Yeah, I'm interested in that stock for the S308 I just got. That is the one that costs $75 on saigastocks.com, right? Is that just the same stock that they sell on the 16" 308's, or is there some difference?

  12. Hi. I just purchased a Saiga .308 from gunbroker, I expect to have it in my possession within the week. I'm pretty excited about finding a decent auto-loading .308 that didn't break the bank, and have read nothing but praise as far as the saiga is concerned. I also own a Century arms AK and a glock 23. Eventually I plan on getting one of the skeleton stocks for the saiga, and some sort of optics. I assume that the skeleton stock off of the 16" .308 will also fit on the 22" .308, so hopefully I can find someone on here who is converting their 16" to a folding stock or something.

Anyway, just wanted to introduce myself.

Here's some pictures of my previous guns:

    I got this one first:
