  1. I figured out what that "mystery paddle" in the cleaning kit was after reading your post last night :rolleyes:

    Thanks again. I've got it raised up to where the aim point was from memory, and with some tweaking at my next range trip, I should be good to go.

  2. Today I took my s308 to the range for the second time. It is still 100% stock, no scope. I was shooting Lithuanian surplus 150 grain fmj.

    I have gotten the point of aim pretty well sorted out, and I find that it shoots high at 100 yards. If I put the front sight dead on the target, it ends up around a foot high. The point of impact is actually closer to centered between the two prongs than a "dot the I" aim point.

    Is this normal? I have the sight set all the way back on the 100 meter notch. Is there any way to get more of a dead on aim point?

  3. So can anybody chime in as to what RSA trigger group to order? Is the standard AK or the VEPR .308 ??

    I read someone on here saying they used a vepr fcg on their s308 and it dropped right in. Why not email or call red star arms and ask them? www.redstararms.com . I am considering an rsa fcg too.

  4. I don't know about the RSA trigger, but the G2 requires some grinding of the "bump" on the front side of the base of the hammer in order of it to clear the cross member on the receiver. This is pretty straight forward and you really can't screw it up since your grinding off a part of it that doesn't come in contact with the trigger and other parts. It's more of a meatball cut and not a precision thing you need to do. I'd suggest putting it in first to see what and where you need to grind (you'll figure it out in no time).

    If I remember correctly, the width of the G2 only needs to be modified if you plan on putting the bolt hold open back in it. This can be handy, but may not be entirely necessary if you plan on using the surefire mags which act as a bho in themselves. Personally, I ditched the BHO in two of my three 308's because it tends to slam into my trigger finger when firing while wearing my winter jacket (or anything that bounces back the gun after recoil)

    The safety issue can be dealt with in a couple of ways, the best and easiest is to not leave a round in the chamber when you want to be safe (that's a good idea for any gun). The second thing is that it only becomes "hot" if you pull the trigger with the safety on. If you first push the trigger back forward before taking the safety off, it will not fire. The second option is just more of an FYI in case you've forgotten to clear the chamber and may have fudged the trigger. Keep it pointed in a safe direction if you pull the safety off in that case.

    You can also weld a bit on to the hammer in order to resolve the issue (see the post for that in the tagged threads to get a better explanation).

    I am also trying to decide on a fcg for my s-308. The safety issue to me is really important and I would prefer not to have to worry about it(aka I want no issues with possible nd's involving safety on trigger pulls). I noticed on Dinzag's site that he modifies the Tapco fcg. Do his mods eliminate this problem?

  5. Hey guys, thanks for the information. I stumbled onto a page that gives some information on this topic since i posted this. http://gunsafe.org/ak-47.htm . They(CT DPS) originally said as long as it didn't say "AK-47" on it it was ok. After eight years and thousands sold, they changed their interpretation to say it can't have the operating system of an AK, use 7.62x39, and have interchangeable parts with an AK. So, .223 and .308 are not banned seems to be the key.

  6. I live in CT where there is an assault weapons ban. "AK type" rifles are banned, but for some reason Saiga's are legal in .223 or .308.

    So, my question is this: Will converting my Saiga .308 magically turn it into an "AK type" rifle in CT? Has anyone in CT gotten an answer to this from a knowledgeable source?

    I am thinking I can convert it as long as I don't add more than one of the following according to the AWB:

    (i) A folding or telescoping stock;

    (ii) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the

    action of the weapon;

    (iii) A bayonet mount;

    (iv) A flash suppressor or threaded barrel designed to

    accommodate a flash suppressor; and

    (v) A grenade launcher;

    And the fact that it isn't 7.62x39 will keep it from being an "AK type" like it does now.

    Hard to figure out the laws when they don't make much sense.

  7. I live in CT and we do have a state AWB, but semi-auto rifles are legal.

    Ar15's are legal as long as they aren't Colt(way to be dumb while hurting state businesses lawmakers!). DSA FAL's are legal(FN Fal's are specifically listed as banned, the same as Colt AR15's are). Saiga's are legal as long as they are .223 or .308. "AK types" are banned, but apprently an AK type has 7.62x39 according to them. M1A's are legal.

    No rifle can have more than one of the following features:

    (i) A folding or telescoping stock;

    (ii) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the

    action of the weapon;

    (iii) A bayonet mount;

    (iv) A flash suppressor or threaded barrel designed to

    accommodate a flash suppressor; and

    (v) A grenade launcher;

    There is also a fairly long list of specific rifles that are banned.

  8. I think it was in the speer manual where they recomend not pushing lightweight .223's above 3000 fps in fast twist barrels because they spin themselves into oblivion. It was only in the lightest .223's and I believe they were saying in regard to 1:7 barrels that they were cautioning against it, but I guess we have an instance reported here showing it is not just .223.

  9. Hi all. I just got a 16.3" Saiga .308 a few days ago, and I have been reading many threads and learning a lot. I think I have answered this question for myself, but I thought that this new forum would be a good place to post this question for others to have an easy way to find the answer that it took me a few days to figure out (ok, maybe I am slow :P ). I also want to double check that I understand it correctly.

    It is my understanding that the 922r conversion allows you to modify a Saiga with a pistol grip and hi cap mags. Is this the sole reason? Can I do other modifications, like furniture and buttstock without making it 922r compliant?
