Shark brake vs. plastic shotshell wads

Recommended Posts

Shark brake wins!

In doing a little forensic testing the other day I went downrange to examine my fired wads. Holy mackeral sapphire, the Win. AA wads were just shredded to crap! Took me a few minutes to figure that the sharp-edged vents on the near-bore-sized inner diameter of the shark brake were almost certainly the cause.

On a few it looked like maybe a petal or two had caught and started to fold back while passing through the brake, and I wondered if this might affect patterning. I cast my own Lee slugs which use plastic wads, and I do get some flyers.

Anyone do any serious testing of shot patterns and/or slug groups with, and without, the shark brake? I for one don't feel like taking mine off just to see. Even if I get better slug groups at 100 yards without it, I'd still put the shark brake back on because it reduces recoil and looks cool. It's a close range weapon anyway.

Slugs with traditional fiber wads (like factory slugs) are probably unaffected by the brake in any event.
