timy 1,185
I'm going to change my 223 to accept AK handguards and noticed there are vented and unvented tubes available. Any advantage to either one or does it matter? Thanks, Tim
L5K 162
Vented tubes were used on Chinese rifles, and older Soviet rifles that did not have a vented gas block. The vents serve absolutely no purpose in the function of the rifle, but from my experience do help to allow debris to escape out into the air before it gets deposited on your gas piston and inside your rifle. You can run the rifle with no vents at all, vents in the tube, vents in the block, or vents in both, and it will function exactly the same in any configuration. I appreciate the information. Sounds like it would be a plus to run them in order to keep the internals cleaner and for aesthetic reasons if you prefer the looks. I was also wondering if maybe the rifle would run a bit cooler with the vents. I would think so, if only by a small margin.
L5K 162
I can't say for any temperature tests, but in theory I would think that it would be slightly cooler. Probably not enough to worry about though. Even venting the debris, I don't think is enough to worry about realistically.
