Tapco has made a retainer for thier galil style handguard. That could probably easily be made to work. They are also possibly going to be selling just the retainer someday as well.

Could you just use a gas tube with upper handguard retainer built in along with the Tapco unit for full conversion? If so will any do?

You can use a standard upper gas tube I have a bugarian vented one on mine I believe. The only problem is that it will not match tapcos Galil one which actually now that I think about it goes up above the gas tube. This is how I got a standard one on there:

Just get a standard retainer and cut it down the middle almost all the way through. Pry it open carefully then install it. After that I ran a machine screw through the hole where the original locking lever was and tightened it up. Works pretty good.

I do various AKM length forends with integral retainers. I designed a Saiga clamp-on one, but concluded that these were more cost-effective.
