shipwreck2 1
I am thinking about getting an ak74 and making it an sbr. It would be a home defense gun. What do you think of this idea and what would be your base platform? it does not seem like there are as many ak74 options like there are for the ak47.
BigChongus 765
I've always assumed that it's mainly because it's very hard to find a short 74 barrel with the proper twist rate. Most short 5.45 barrels on the market are cut down 16 inch barrels which don't stabilize the round which results in keyholes.
mancat 2,368
Buy a Zastava M85 or M92 5.56 is actually an ideal home defense round as far as rifle cartridges are concerned. Lots of loads to choose from which have limited wall penetration. Of course if you have no neighbors or others in the home it's no concern.
shipwreck2 1
Thanks guys, I did not think about the twist rate, for some reason I did not think it was as much of an issue with 5.45. I can go eiither way but was leaning towards the ak74 for the relabity and low ammo cost.
XD45 7,124
For reliability and low cost ammo (once the current panic is over) go with the M92, if sbr is your desire.
shipwreck2 1
I see the m92 is a 7.62. Do you prefer the 7.62 over the 5.45 for a home defense over the 7.62? Are the ak74s not as reliable? Edited March 2, 2015 by shipwreck2
BigChongus 765
74s are every bit as reliable. 5.45 and 5.56's performance suffers a lot more out of short barrels than 7.62 though.
XD45 7,124
This ^ Plus the M92 is high quality and extremely easy to sbr.
