  1. I hadn't thought of this until reading these posts but bear with me for a moment. If you go to your local auto parts store you can find some adhesive tape designed to be wrapped around headers (you can also find the much more expensive fiberglass wrap). If you were to remove the HG and put a layer of this into it would it remedy the problem of a too hot HG? I guess the only problem I could see is that the heat has to go somewhere and it might reflect too much of it back to the barrel.
  2. Did I mention the girl w/ the gun pic was OK?
  3. Many years ago I read something in "Guns and Ammo" (circa 1984) that has stuck w/ me. Paraphrased it read "You don't get used to noise, you just go deaf." After many years of being on a construction job site and going to hardcore clubs w/ a hobby of shooting guns I am quite happy with being regarded as the geek who always wore plugs.
  4. I live in a relatively dry climate and keep my ammo in my basement which generally stays between 65 and 70 degrees F year 'round. I keep all of my ammo in ammo cans. Is there anything else I need to do to ensure this stuff will go bang into the future? If I keep opening and closing these ammo cans will that do anything to compromise it?
  5. OK I needed to bring this back up as I to am now looking for a stock handguard. I went to modify mine and apparently there was an extremely localized earthquake at the time contained entirely in my basement. I thought I would be able to file/ sand out the imperfections but there were a few vents that went too far out of whack. And as a heads up to anyone else trying this: if you cut too low on the front of the HG toward the front where the groove holds onto the pins on the barrel you will run into metal that is embedded in the HG. As a rule of thumb I would say to not cut below the heig
  6. I may be naive about this but I usually find OEM stuff to be adequate for the intended use. It seems to me that by adding vents it could only help any potential heating problems.
  7. This may be a topic for another thread but in the debate or shorter vs longer stocks and shooting styles raises a question. My father was a police officer and when he was trained to shoot it was the squared off isosceles stance (mind you this is for handguns but I'm going somewhere with this). Around the mid eighties the wisdom shifted to the Weaver stance which had you standing at 45 degree angle to your target. The thought was to provide as small of a target area to a bad guy as possible. Remember at the time vests were still not in wide spread use. Now the theory is back to th
  8. Thanks for the input. After reading your replies and thinking more about it I think the NATO length is what will suit me best.
  9. GRR! You so took my idea! I'm am in the planning stages of what I'm going to do w/ mine and what you did w/ that HG is almost identical to what I was thinking, I even started drawing the pencils lines and they almost mirror what you did. Seriously though I think it looks good and gives me faith that it will look sharp when I'm done with it.
  10. this is my converted 7.62 next to my .223 the 7.62 has the warsaw stock so that should give you some idea of how they look compared to stock.. Ya know I looked at your post before and should have recalled that you had that pic in there. It seems that the NATO stock would be pretty close to original length. Thanks for the pic.
  11. My bad. I knew what I meant but typed it in backwards - oops. How does the NATO compare to the stock stock (heh)?
  12. I'm starting to put together the preliminary pieces for my conversion and need a little advice. I know this question comes down to personal preference and body geometry but I was hoping to at least get a few opinions. I'm 6' tall and trying decide which of these stocks I'll be happier with (I'm looking at the KVAR). I'm a bit concerned that the NATO may be too short but can see the upside to more "carbine" sized weapon. Any thoughts? On a totally separate note I'm looking at getting the G2 FCG from Dinzag. Since he includes the e-clips do I need the retainer plate? Thanks
  13. So we have all heard of the panic buying and the skyrocketing price of ammo. My question is this: Is anyone shooting less? I personally have never been one to get out to the range on a weekly basis so I can say that my shooting habits have not changed. I have tried to get a modest supply for my meager collection (3 handguns and 3 long guns) but have not put a moratorium on shooting them. I am wondering if some of you that are stocking up are refusing to fire your weapons for fear that the ammuntion may truly not be there for purchase in the near future. Or is there perhaps a middle groun
  14. When I bought my rifle the dealer also had ProMag products. He tested fitted 3 mags before he found one that my rifle liked. The other ones did not latch properly. I've only put about 400 rounds though it so far and there were some jams in the first hundred rounds or so but since then it has been flawless. That experience told me not to buy any mags online. I'm not sure what the difference is between mags but it definately seems that you need to find a match.
  15. I know very little about these guns but am trying to learn what I can from this site. I can tell you that the 7.62 that I bought came from a gun store that was closing. The gun was not represented as (nor did it appear to be) altered in any way. With this gun I also bought a 30 rnd mag (waffle mag) and it has performed just fine for me.
