  1. There should be a thread in the tech setction about putting a pin in the mag to hold down the 2nd round and thus not crunching the first round. When you need to fire, simply pull the pin, disengage the saftey(if on) and rack the bolt. Works for me.

  2. I have a NcStar 2-7x28 scope for mine(for those 100+yrd shots while hunting) but for round the house I have a set of cheap pistol style, rail mounted sights(had to as I Bullpupped the gun) that work spot on under 50yrds. And for longer, they flip up to an AR style peep sight. Bare bones is good, but so is haveing options.

  3. First, is there money beyond the bonus?

If so, how much will determine where to start.

    If not, see question 2.

Second, do you have a good Rifle, Shotgun or Pistol?

If yes to the Rifle, go for the S12, if not(unless you already have a 12ga.) consider what you can legally hunt with in your area. If you can hunt with a rifle, I'd go for the Sx39 or S.223 as they are cheaper than the S12 and have longer reach. The S12 is almost the cost of a S.308 so that would be up to you, depends on your needs.

Get the gun/ammo you need or can make the MOST use of, then get the tac gear.

    Good luck

  4. Hey RR666,

If this is just for SHtF, than go with what you can get and upgrade later, BUT, if it's for day to day needs where your life is on the line, go with the top of the line if at all possible.

If it is for SHtF, consider spending less money on an "over armour" vest and getting concealable armour for underneath. That way you can use the armour for more than just when SHtF. This is the route I'm takeing as I am no longer in the Mil, LE, etc. The concealable is of more use, in that I can wear it anytime without suspicion. The plate carrier, hmm, not so much.

    Good luck,

  5. I've found Condor to be excellent "low end"(meaning price) gear. For me it's a matter of haveing the best I can afford now and upgradeing later, rather than waiting for later and not haveing anything now.

If SHtF, You'll use what you have. If you have NOTHING, well, you're just SOL.

There is a reason that the high end gear is so expensive, besides the name. I've found the higher end stuff to be more water resistant and possibly ware resistant also. That said, I really like my Condor gear.

I have Condor, UTG, BlackHawk, etc. The great thing about Molle gear is that you can mix and match depending on your needs and your budget.

If it is what you want, get it. Better to have and not need, than to need and not have.

  6. Well, first off, having a Muslim, of any stripe listen to the problems of combat vets from a Muslim dominated theater is just utter stupidity on the Army's part. Go figure he'd get pissed off about the war and then add to that threatening to send him into the fray. There was a reason Japanese-Americans served in Europe and NOT the Pacific. Ya, sounds good, "they can better relate to the indigenous people", or be lured into the enemies mind games. I'd rather have a queer in a hole with me in Iraq or A-stan right now. Not that Muslim's (or Gays) can't be good and trust worthy people, quite the contrary, but that the lure can be so damned great at times. Why put them(and everyone else) at risk?

    again, just my 2 bits

  7. Sounds great, but I can never remember to use the damn coupons till I'm out of the store.

At any rate, why not just push the stores to save money by dropping the coupon thing and cutting thier prices. Honestly, I shop at the same store, usually buy the same stuff(with occasional variances) and all I see is prices going up. WHY!

To pay for the printing of coupons to attract people who like to think they're getting a good deal.

Now my usual store is cutting out several of my typaical products and I've about had it. May have to start shopping elswhere.

I, have better things to do than cut coupons, like maybe a new mod for my S12 or even some range time. :super:

    Sorry, just my 2 bits,

  8. "The 12 round Surefires are FREAKIN LONG. Much moreso than I prefer. I like the 8 rounders myself. One thing I DID notice with them while unloading a mag outside the gun.... sometimes on new mags, the last round doesn't always get kicked up the entire way. It sits just down far enough that the bolt probably wouldn't catch it, were it actually in the gun like that. I want to say though, with the mags in the gun, I have never been able to reproduce this by hand cycling the action or by firing it."

I've noticed that there is a ramp at the top of the mags that starts off a bit too harsh and the rnds tend to catch on it. This often seems to go away after several cyclings and is no longer a problem. At least on my six AGP 10rnds.

  9. Try checking the camping section of your local Wallyworld(or similar) for the closed cell foam. It comes in 6'x2' rolls as sleeping bag mats or even exercise mats. Then make a "pillow case" for it be stitching two peices of cloth(your choice) together leaving an opening at one end. I just did this for a single gun soft case I got recently and now have a two gunner.

If you can't stitch, find someone that can or take it to you local Horse Tack shop. They do heavy weight stuff and usually cheap.

  10. Good luck Waite, if you've made it this far, you're almost in.

I was up for a local LEO position about 5 yrs ago, and got to the oral boards. Sad thing was, that I was in the top 10 of about sixty apps. And that after about 20yrs since I was Military Police. They were only hiring 2 and I didn't make it that far. I don't interveiw well, tend to be too honest at times, lol. I did get a call a few years later, but was already Shoeing Horses and the pay/schedual is way better. And usually the only dumb Asses I have to deal with now, actually are.

    Stay cool,

    Mikel

  11. Hey Guiri,

Now that you let us know that you already have a pistol and a shotgun and will practice, things have changed a bit. Since you already have the Shotty, forget the S12 until you are ready to upgrade.

Buck has a good point, most any .22 will be of use, esp. if you look to Hide and Evade as Facepull mentions. A long barreled pistol may be handier than the Papoose, but not by much and the Papoose(or any carbine) will reach farther. I've seen one take down a deer at 50yrds.

So that puts you at 4 guns already, each with different ammo. Arik lays out the pros and cons very well and I'd say the .308 is out, due to weight, cost of gun/ammo. Unless you have your heart set on it, in which case, this is all moot. And you can always upgrade later.

So that leaves the x39 and .223. At this point it is almost a personal choice.

I prefer the x39 for all the reasons Arik listed. I've used the .223 and didn't care for it. If you're carrying a .22 already, why carry a high powered one. My next weapon will be a x39 with 20" barrel. Besides, the x39 is the ammo of choice for most survivalist, which means you are more likely to pick it up from abandoned caches/corpses(you wont be the only one in the hills/mountains) or trade for it if need be.

    Just my thoughts,

    Mikel

  12. I've got a PT145 Millenium for CC and it shoots great, I can do a 6-8circle at 30' which suprised the crap out of me. Esp. w/ Wolf ammo which I wont use anymore due to oddities in the cartridges. Some were fine, others too long and caught in the mag, and others didn't have enough powder to make it to the targets.

The down side to it is that all the controls are right hand only.

  13. Guiri,

If you not going take the time to practice, you WILL need more ammo, no matter what rifle you carry. The .308 is a Battle Rifle(not a Sniper Rifle) but without practice, you loose the distance advantage regardless.

Esp. w/ the 16" barrel. Imho, and for you, forget the .308, it's advantages are outweighed by your needs. Go with the x39. It was built as an all around round and is the best of both worlds(relative accuracy and stopping power), besides the fact of it's availabilty. I'd go with the 20" barrel just because I like to reach out as far as I can. But then I would Bullpup it, likely makeing it a bit shorter than the standard 16"er and no butt stock to just add weight. But thats my op. I carry a cleaning kit, for all my carried weapons, on my vest/belt.

Ultimately what you REALLY want is a Saiga 12 w/19" barrel. The ammo is cheap, plentiful and insanely diverse, relatively speaking. Not to mention, One 10rnd mag of 00 buckshot = 90-120, roughly .30 rnds(9-12/shell). Thats 3-4 30rnd mags of ANYTHING else. Think about it, that's 9-12 .30 rnds, going down range, with EACH pull of the trigger. At 50yds, you'll have roughly a 50" spread +/-. You WILL hit something with at least a few of those .30 pellets. Esp. if you aim low center mass. Beyond 30-50yrds, switch to slugs, esp. the 3" Magnums. Unless you're a "natural", you'll likely not be much good beyond 100 or so yards anyway, at least not w/o practice.

And remember, if SHtF, you will most likely not be where you want to be at the time(whats your relative location?). So you will have to get there, possibly through an urban setting, and even in the woods, your max range will likely only be 100yds or so(stay out of open feilds/parking lots/etc.).

For the non-gun nut, go S12 all the way. If this is your first/only gun, or as you said, you just want something, just in case, that IS highly reliable, easy to shoot, easy to maintain, and can take out a bear if need be, the S12 is the only real answer. Everything else's only advantage is range(if you practice).

At least that's what I've found to be true. I wanted the S.308 until I moved to Ohio(from Arizona). Too urban here and where it is not, 100+yrds is pretty standard. The S12 will doing everything you need plus so much more.

Good luck and see you when it hits,

    Mikel

  14. I have 1 5rndr w/ 00buck in gun(fits in safe better than an 8 or 10), and one, similarly loaded, 10rndr handy. You know, just in case there's more than one or two invaders and they don't learn from their buddies mistakes.

For SHtF, I have 6 AGP 10s, 5 Tai 5s and 2 Surefire 8s. It's a start and what I have the pouches for if I need to bug out.
