  1. Thanks for calming my fears. I forgot to mention I had to tug on the front of the trigger guard to get it to line up with the hole on the receiver. I think it placed some tension on the front two screws like they are fighting each other. Anyway thanks and I will just check them every time I clean.
  2. So I am done with my conversion. I bolted on CSS trigger guard and put some blue locktite on the threads, cause I didn't have any red. I later found some red and tried to remove the bolts and couldn't remove the two front ones. I actually ended up stripping the front one, and it still wouldn't budge. I was able to remove the back one and put some red on it. I just double checked everything and the trigger guard is still secured well. So my Question is will it stay and should I worry? Thanks
  3. Parts came today. Started my first S-12 conversion. Waiting for the alumahyde to cure. Converting is fun stuff.

    Buttstock

Yeah, I need a Warsaw. I plan to put a pad on it, which will put me at about nato length. I like to get on top of the S-12 and show it who's boss . The Warsaw lets me man up on the weapon. Plus my 74 has a warsaw, so its what I'm use to.

Guess I will be ordering it from Kvar. Anyone ever have a bad experience with them? If so who would be better to order from? Thanks.

    Buttstock

So far I have everything ordered from CSS, to do my full conversion, except a buttstock. I'm looking to put a solid warsaw length stock, but I don't want to use the TAPCO stock (because I hear they are weak). Anyone know where I can find a good deal? Can't wait to get this project moving. Do we as forum members get a Discount from Kvar?
  7. I did check out the videos, and to be honest that is what has me confused. In the video with the shepherds crook install, there doesn't seem to be any mod to the bho, and there is no mention of any modification to be made. In the video with the retention plate there is. Guess I call Greg.
  8. So if I don't want to modify the BHO, I would use the shepherds Crook. Sorry to ask so many questions but I want to make sure I purchase the right parts. I don't want to spend good money after bad, if you know what I mean.
  9. so no notching for the safety to fit? Ok, I think I found the answer. The modified BHO that you can buy allows you to be able to access the BHO without having to remove your FGC. I think it also helps when installing a retaining plate. Is this correct?
  10. Thank you everyone for the speedy responses. So let me get this straight. . . . I Dont have to notch the bolt hold open for the safety to fit? I was planning on notching it for the spring to be retained proper, but the safety has me puzzled. I have seen a U notched by some for the safety. I think you can even buy a bho modified. Also, It seems like the retaining plate is the better way to go? ChileRelleno, I have been studying the techniques on how to install the spring and the fishing line sound s like it would be the way to go. As far as parts I'm just doing a basic conver
  11. I'm getting ready to order parts and I don't know what to get. First off do you always have to notch the bolt hold open? I've seen it done without notching. Do I go retaining plate or shepherds crook. Do I have to notch when using one or the other. So confused. Please help
  12. Thanks to everyone who has voted/ replied to this post. I am still thinking about which one to continue to mod, but everyone has brought up really good points and I find myself falling back in love with my S-12. Self-Inflicted thanks for the video brother.
  13. Some of the words you chose are giving me a flashback. I absolutely agree about it being nerve racking and it is not for the timid. 'Stressful' is almost an understatement with the lack of replacement parts. I'm not sure where you found pics of how to do it, but I did mine with no real explanation and one pic that wasn't very beneficial. It was quite stressful, but worth it. I certainly do not recommend this operation for those that might not be so good with their hands. Good job. ETA: The posts in the 'bolt polishing' thread were not there when I did mine. It was somewhat of a 'hush hush'
  14. Good deal, thanks. I have seen these posts and mostly just skimmed over them not really soaking up a ton of info. I didn't realize that extreme amount of blending and forming is what can lead to the closed bolt mag load mod. I have used a lot of these tutorialsfor reference and polished my own bolt's on my 2 S12's but both still won't load on a closed bolt. guess i need to remove more material and smooth a little more. I don't see any problem why it would be a problem, but does any1 else have any feedback on why it would be a bad idea to take a loaded mag, sit down with my dremel and heads and
  15. After months of trying to find the extra cash to send my bolt off to Cobra, I finally grew a set of balls and polish/contoured it myself. It was a little nerve racking but it was definitely easier than I thought. I just took my time and checked a bunch. I now can load on a closed bolt, and it cycles better. I didn't over due it, just modified it enough to load a full mag. I just wanted to throw out a Big thanks to Cobra and Paulyski. They took a lot of time to post pics and provide information on how to mod your bolt. I would have never attempted this if it wasn't for their help. I s
  16. Daniel I'm sorry but I'm further south. MN.9130 good advice. Waffen can't argue that the S-12 is a powerhouse. 2oo yards is further than I would have thought an S-12 could be effective. Thats awesome.
  17. Hi ya'll, I live in Texas, pretty close to the border. If you watch the news I don't have to tell you how dangerous things are down here. I have an Ak 74 and a S-12 and don't know which one to make as my primary weapon. I need help deciding so that I can start upgrading one of them. So which one do you think would be better. I don't live in the city if that helps. I want to improve the 74 so that I can see the sight better at night.(red dot and mount or night sights.) The S-12 needs to be full converted. Money is always an issue. Both will eventually get done just want a nudge wh
  18. Well I fix it. I took a little off the back of the muzzle break and now it fits perfect. Call me crazy but I just believe that nothing should be wigglin on a man's muzzle.
  19. I know the muzzle break wiggle isn't a problem, however it bugs the hell out me. Anyone ever file the front site base to get it to index uptight against it. Just an idea I had. Or I could file the muzzle break. It would only take of fee1 .001 of an inch I think.
  20. I'll try to today or tomorrow. Do you think there is a problem?
  21. Thanks. I figured as much. My last 74 didn't share these characteristics so I was just wondering. I have handled an AR-15 or two and they never rattled as much. No big deal to me though, just as long as it goes bang .
  22. I was looking over the 74 today (still havent shot it) and noticed that the 74 break isn't indexed all the way up against the FSB and it wiggles a little. Is this a problem or should I just put some teflon tape on the threads? Also when I shake the rifle I can hear the firing pin rattling around pretty good. Is this normal? Thanks RF28
  23. Bvamp, don't know what went down with the transfer of the rifle. It may have been someone else's at one time and they repaired it. Anyhow, I have heard of gun manufactures doing this before. Maybe someone can shed some light on the situation. All I know is that I am happy with what they shipped me thus far.
  24. Wow, but given the circumstances I believe I would want a new one instead of a cobbled together one. What are your feelings on this? I'm more than happy to have received a new rifle all together. I was hoping that would have been the outcome when I sent it off. The fit and finish on this rifle far exceeds what I was hoping for.
  25. well, I haven't been able to shoot the 74 yet but I have inspected it a few times. I mentioned that the rile had all new internls; scratch that its a new rifle. It has a new serial number.
