  1. This topic has been discussed a number of times on older threads. I would start by looking there first. There is a ton of great information on this site posted by some folks who don't mind tap their vast knowledge and experience.

  2. I went with the Springfield loaded as my first 1911. You get a lot of gun for the money. I have run various loads of various qualities and have had not a single jam. There is a 1911 website that has a fair bit of information about various makes and models you can check out. I was going to go with the Kimber but have heard multiple complaints about the quality and the external extractor problems. One question, is this going to be a pistol you shoot a lot or a little. A friend of mine mentioned that makes a difference, especially if you buy a 1911 with an aluminum frame. Just my 2c.

  3. Is ammunition going to be an issue? If it is, the HK might be the choice since your backup is the 1911, you only have to carry one type of ammo. If it isn't, few things beat the simplicity of a good old bolt action. Simple to operate and simple to clean and maintain. I hunt in Alaska and the last thing I want to be doing is unfucking my gun while trying to use it. Just my thought on that.

  4. In response to what was said earlier about the Coast Guard, before you call them pussies, sit out in 30 foot seas in the middle of a storm for 20 hours straigt looking for a small craft that is in trouble. Coasties may not get shot at but they have some rather difficult jobs. Intercepting drug runners and illegal drugs is an honerable way to serve your country and your neighbors. Now as far as being worried about your child, what is wrong with that? If they join though, with their eyes open to the possibilities of what may occur, that is their choice. As far as other gripes with the military, it is an all volunteer force with certian stipulations that when you sign on the dotted line, you have to be prepared for. The pay was shit, the hours were terrible and the recruiters were liars but that did not change the fact it made me a better person for it and I don't regret a minute of it.

  5. I am going to add my 2 cents to this. I actually hunted for years in Alaska with an 1893 7X57 mauser. I hunted sitka blacktail deer. All I did to the rifle was coat the stock with epoxy, glass bed the barrel and put some peep sights on it. It is a great 100-250 yard rifle. It's ugly but perfect for brush busting. The swedish 6x55 is also a great round. Its penetration power is amazing. I read that some English hunters swore by that round and took down elephants with it. If you go with a mauser of military heritage make sure to buy one that was either swedish or german made, they used the best steel and didn't cut corners.

  6. I pray that some idiot doesn't shoot someone with a tater and spoil the fun for all the rest of us. It's ok to have a launcher but ONLY for entertainment and NOT for aiming at anything living. Mine will put a spud out almost of sight and there's a 15 second hang time before it comes splashing down into the pond. Just the sound it makes is enough to help with our annual resident Canada geese invasion problems.I would hate to see the damage a spud would inflict on a human body. I have seen them go through a hollow exterior door, continue through a house about 15 feet and take out a window including the wooden panes. That to me sounds a lot more dangerous than a tennis ball, flaming or not. By the way this was an abandoned house on my own property, don't try this UNLESS you're at home.

Hey Cobra 76 two, if its any consolation, I work in a fairly busy ER and I have seen a number of projectile injuries but none yet from a potato (yet!). Seen some interesting nail gun injuries though (one should never look down the barrel of a loaded gun, any gun!).

  7. Thanks for the post AegisDei. This answers a lot of questions I had about what to shoot through what. I had inadvertently caused some off-topic conversations on the Knoxx drum thread. The only other question I have here is can steel shot be used thru a saiga barrel? Will this affect the chrome lining. Is there any definative evidence one way or the other?

  8. Good to know. I'm still fairly new to the modification and parts scene. I bought my s-12 before I knew what their potential really was. Mine is a 19" that has the permenant choke. I was kind of thinking about having it reamed out and having a american (e.g. winchester or remmington) screw in placed. Any thoughts?

  9. I'll second that! Disasters bring out the best and the worst in people. The press seems to want to look more at the bad parts than those who have gone out of their way to help. My hat is off to anyone who in some way or another lent a hand in this debacle.
