  1. Sent my Robinson Arms .308 Vepr to Krebs Custom to have it converted to accept Saiga .308 Surefire mags. Marc deemed it to be an unsafe conversion, due to radical milling required on the front trunnion. I then asked about modifying the mags to fit the gun, and he said that wouldn't be a good idea either, due to the amount that would have to be removed from the mag bodies, leaving them weak and prone to possible failure. He said the best thing, would be to modify the rifle to accept Galil .308 mags, which would be a safe, clean and simple operation. New 25 round IWI Galil mags are availible right now on the net for $99 a pop, while 5 and 10 round Vepr mags, are virtually non- existant. I then asked about converting M14/M1A mags to Galil configuration to save on money. He said it would be "False economy" because, the M-1A mags would end up costing more, if you had them professionaly done, than the Galil mags, and wouldn't be reliable.(That why nobody does them anymore) Everything is about liability and reliability these days, and that's good from my point of view. I guess I'll order a few of the Galil mags, while they are availible, and wait to see if any more show up later. Hope this info is of interest. Oh, once I figure out how to do it, I'll post pics of the Vepr!

    UPDATE: 3/17/10

  3. As I browse the forum, I can't help noticing the creative screennames...some are obvious (like mine for instance, my actual name), but others, not so much.

    So, what does yours mean?

Haifisch is German for Shark, and is also the name of a song by the baddest band on earth, RAMMSTEIN!

While I'm not German, but descended from a Scottish Highland Clan with Celtic origins, I did have ancestors in this country who spoke German.

    WIR HALTEN ZUSAMMEN.......We hold together

WIR HALTEN MITEINANDER....We put up with each other

    WIR HALTEN ZUEINANDER.....We stick together

  4. Where can you pick up the HK sights?

I just got mine from carolina shooter supply a few days ago. They seem to be one of the only places with them that are not backorder. They shipped extremely fast too...

If you have tools, time, skill and patience, you can pick up the HK sight parts at WWW.robertrtg.com for $52.50, and

convert them yourself or you can just order everything you need from Carolina Shooters Supply for $84.95, and have them TIG'd on. And yes, CSS is very fast on delivery!

  5. Exploring the idea of converting my Saigas to the left side Galil safety. All necessary Galil parts, grip and screw,

left and right safety levers can be had for about $104.

Anyone done this conversion? Anything can be done, if you're willing to spend the money! I'm just interested to see if anyone has gone this way before, and has any words of wisdom.

The safety operated with the shooting hand thumb, on the left side of the grip, just feels better to me!

My inquiring mind needs to know. Thanks

UPDATE: cost of all parts necessary for the conversion ( that I have found )

    STANDARD SELECTOR: $129

    INVERTED SELECTOR: $274

If anyone knows of better prices, I'd appreciate hearing about it.

  6. I think you need to study it first, as I have an idea you are clueless as to how it actually works.

Took your advice and studied the parts involved and their interaction and now have a firm grasp of the entire operation. No longer " clueless " but well informed! Thanks

  8. There are two types of Galil safeties. There is the one that I believe is more common, it's basically just 2 parts and you push it forward to make the gun "safe". The second type, is more involved and is a forward to fire configuration. Once you see them, it should be fairly obvious what is required. Keep in mind that the thumb safety can be rather stiff but it's usually fixable by tweaking the right side selector. Here are few pics:

  10. I have a chance to pick up a Vepr soon. In fact two Veprs: Vepr 223 and Vepr 308. While I am aware that Vepr 223 takes AK74 mags with special mod, can Vepr 223 take Saiga 223 mags? Can Vepr 223 take AK mags in 223?

More importantly can Vepr 308 take Saiga 308 mags?

    Thanx

    Hello Tigerclaw:

I have a Robinson Arms Vepr .308 that I sent to Krebs Custom for evaluation, to determine feasibility of modification to accept Saiga .308 Surefire mags. Upon examination, Marc said he was not comfortable with such a conversion, as it involved such extensive milling of the front trunnion, that it would leave it in a weakened condition.

I then inquired about the possibility of converting the mags to fit the gun, and he said he would have to remove so much of the magazine body where it fits into the action, that it would make the magazine weak, unreliable and he wouldn't trust it. He suggested modifying the gun to accept Galil .308 mags, which he said was a simple, clean, safe and reliable conversion! He said the Galil mags are very good and more obtainable than the Vepr mags. I have long searched the net for .308 Vepr mags, and have yet to find one! In one nights search, I found all the new Israeli .308 Galil mags that I could possibly want, with the only drawback being that they are $99 dollars a pop, plus shipping. I then read that the original Galil .308 mags used by the IDF, were in fact modified M14/M1A mags.

I then asked Marc how difficult that modification would be, and he said that it would be a false economy, and that the converted mags would end up being more expensive and less reliable than the Galil mags, if you had them professionally done. I bought one of the Galil mags (ouch) and sent it to Marc, and told him to go ahead with the conversion. I will just have to pick up additional mags, when they are available, and as finances allow. I just wasn't comfortable having only 2 mags for my Vepr, 1-5 round and 1-10. I hope all this helps.

  11. I have searched countless postings, but have been unable to find this info.

I need to remove my S-12 barrel from the receiver for machine work, and my machine shop has never done this before.

After removing the FCG, and driving out the barrel retention pin, what's the proper way to press the barrel out of the receiver without screwing anything up? It seems to me that a tool machined to the configuration of a 3" 12 gauge shell at the front, with a straight rod at the rear, extending beyond the rear of the receiver, for the press to act upon, should do the trick. What say you?

Due to the way the barrel is made, with the shell guides at the rear, this means the barrel has to be pressed back into the receiver EXACTLY as it came out, with no margin of error. I asked Tony Rumore if the barrel was in any way keyed to assure perfect alignment, and he said no, it's just trial and error, and being very careful when re-installing. Be sure to index mark the barrel and receiver to help in re-alignment, prior to dis-assembly!

Any advice from those who have been there, would be greatly appreciated

  12. I don't mean to be insulting but you do have the proper NFA paperwork already stamped and in hand before you start this little journey right ?

No insult taken! I will complete the entire conversion, minus the barrel bob, then will submit paperwork, when that returns, , then the amputation will take place, by a proper professional. Thanks for your concern though.

  13. Hello: Being new to this forum, please bear with me! I am converting my Saiga 12 to a SBS. I have in hand, one of the Kross "Hellion" handguards. By actual measurement, I see that I have to move the front gas block, rearward, exactly 3.87" or 98.32 MM. By doing this, the bolt carrier/gas piston assembly needs to be shortened a like amount.

This eliminates the gas piston completely, along with the front portion of the bolt carrier. It appears that at least a portion of the front part of the gas piston is necessary, to protrude through the rear wall of the gas block into the gas chamber 1/4 of an inch. This is necessary for the gas Puc to impinge upon, forcing the gas piston/bolt piston/bolt carrier rearward, cycling the action. It appears that some have accomplished the same action, by removing the gas piston, filling in the front of the bolt carrier, reshaping it a little, boring out the rear hole in the gas block, and using the bolt carrier as a piston. This strikes me as rather crude. What is the correct way to do this mod?

    I need some enlightenment! Thanks

Your close ..... 3.75" for 8" guns .... longer barrels don't reqiure the same dwell time

the bolt carrier/gas piston assembly needs to be shortened a like amount.... correct

appears that at least a portion of the front part of the gas piston is necessary ...incorrect, weld and reshape the carrier

boring out the rear hole in the gas block...correct, and taper

This strikes me as rather crude ..... just as the AK

    Thanks for the info Saigatechusa!
