  1. I bought some Chinese steel mags from Cope's. They were cheap - and really well made too. Fit like champ with a little grinding on the catch - and the Saiga mag fits perfectly too - no grinding needed on the Sagia mag. As long as the catch grabs good on the magazine and releases without hanging up - all is good.
  2. Brown bear. 500 rounds from Cheaperthandirt for something like $109. Shipped the same day I ordered. Great balance of price, qty, quality, shipping cost, etc. About $0.22/round seems to be the target price right now (before shipping).
  3. No thread joy. And as it turns out, the flash suppressor I want to use has a thread depth of .425--which I found out this morning via a tech email from Brownell's. However, I cut off .625 of the shroud, which means I need to reduce the barrel length of a little over 3/16" if I want the flash suppressor to contact the remaining part of the shroud. That would leave me with a barrel length of 16.1"...still legal, and it gives me a chance to clean up the crown. I shouldn't have been so impatient. In addition to the lack of threads, I my rifle doesn't have a grip hole, either, but I do have dim

  5. What about Hollow Points with a Saiga? Anyone have trouble with them hanging up? i had some hangups with hp's at first. once my bullet guide got broke in no more probs. Thanks for the info. I am eventually going to get around to the bullet guide. Sounds like it might be worth while to give a new bullet guide just a little sanding on the leading edge.
  6. OK. Compelled by evil Saiga forum to get dremmel out. Removed 5/8" of shroud and confirmed threaded barrel. Went easier than I thought it would. Dremmel is the way to go for sure. Go slow and when the base material gets super thin and cracks just begin to show under the cut in a few places, just twist a little with a vice grip or channel lock. I actually got the material so thin all around (without touching the barrel underneath), it took almost no energy to twist the end of the shroud off. Start to finish was about 30 minutes of work including clean up and touch up paint. Ready for MB
  7. I have a 3/09 also, and it has all the same good stuff. Pretty certain it has threads. I can slip a feeler under the shroud and catch the first thread pretty good. Now that I see others in this production that do in fact have threads, I think I am going to grab the dremmel! 5/8" it is from what I understand.
  8. LOL. Half of what I do that gun, car or xbox related winds up being covert. Explaining why the Fed Ex guy delivered a 16 pound box of ammo (500 rounds) was near impossible though. To a non-gun person that is A LOT of ammo. And explaining that it is for when zombies attack does work well either (note to self). The crappy part is that I really need 200-300 more to go to the range and still maintain some inventory (for the zombies of course, ha, ha, silly to have a gun and no ammo around). The 200 round a pop thing might just slip under the radar. Also have a Ruger 10/22 that is great
  9. Thanks for the info. I always google companies to see what gives, and saw a few complaints about the price hike thing. Shipping was $2 more than SGAmmo. I think it was $16 S&H (SGAmmo was $14). But I had trouble getting SGAmmo order to work. Being pretty impatient to get some ammo (new gun... gotta go shoot it!), I went ahead with cheaperthandirt for now. I will check out Cope's today and bookmark it. Thanks. just as a follow up. the order arrived today. super fast shipping. can't complain.

  11. Thanks. Tried to buy some from SGammo but had some computer trouble that I will sort out with them for the future. Instead, got 500 rounds of Brown Bear HP ammo for $109 plus shipping from cheaperthandirt. Same price as SGammo actually (+/- $2). That should get me to range for a day! Now just need to save some money for the conversion, some magazines and more ammo.
  12. What about Hollow Points with a Saiga? Anyone have trouble with them hanging up?
  13. thanks. I saw some pretty cheap at the Cheaperthandirt place, 500 round box. I think I might give them a try if the shipping price is reasonable.
  14. Also... is Brown Bear ammo OK? Never heard of it. I have heard of Wolf Ammo though.
  15. Looking for a reliable internet site for 7.62x39 ammo in 500 or 1000 round boxes. 500 preferred. Anyone have any suggestions?
  16. I've got an 09 rifle also. I plan to put a muzzle device on it and when I removed the FSB shroud, mine did not have threads. I know others with 09 riles found threads under their shrouds. If you're planning to add a muzzle device, let us know what you find under the shroud. Here is where the noob part really comes out... are we talking under the gas tube? Or do I need to take something else off to see? I will check it out right away. The shroud in under the front end of the barrel in front of the sights.. the extra metal is cut off and hopefully the barrel is threaded. If not

  18. After reading the "dimples" thread, wanted to post an update... My Saiga is a 09 gun. It came with dimples and the PG hole. Very cool.
  19. I just got mine yesterday. Last week while gun was on order I thought about the possibilities. In the end, the cost and flexibility of doing the conversion was the same (or better) than trying to go the other way and still use high-cap mags. The US made Saiga mags are really expensive, so are the butt stocks with pistol grips built-in. Finally, the balance and handling of the gun is supposed to be much improved by the conversion. In stock form, it is front heavy.
  20. Got my first Saiga today. Not a noob to firearms - but a noob to Saiga's/AK's. Can't wait to go to the range now! Can anyone give me a quick rundown on items to check and how to check them? So far, quick inspection and break down shows that everything appears to fit well and function. AK receiver holes are present so conversion will be a lot easier. Front post is slightly left, but the factory alignment marks in the front are right on (so I doubt it has been zeroed in and a windage adjustment might be in order). Barrel looks clean and shiny. No rattles or loose parts. A few mino
  21. All I can tell you is they the TAPCO Mags, just won't work in my Arsenal SAIGA SGL-20, some say file your Mag. catch on your rifle. NO WAY!!! as my steel 30rd Mags work great and the Arsenal circle 10 30rd Mags work great. So I won't mess with my rifles Mag. catch. Also if I want to sell off the TAPCO Mags that I don't keep for 922r compliance, grinding on them is bad thing to do. Good advice. I am definately going wait on any mods before testing fit-up, firing, etc. Easy to take material away but a real pain the *ss to put it back! What would be real downer is if the rifle d
  22. Agreed on the reliability factor. Thanks for the advice! Any suggestions on internet sites to buy these from? I was looking to get at least 6 of them to start.
  23. New member. Lurking for awhile. Started off looking for an AK in a lower price range. Idea was to get a SHTF rifle to compliment my glock 30 and Ruger 10/22. But, just in case the S does not HTF, the rifle needs to be really fun and use cheap ammo. Accuracy over 100 yards not as important as reliability here. Stopping power a plus. The basic Romy's had my attention at first. Then I noticed the Saiga, did some research, and decided this was the route to go. Order is in at Classic Arms from last week. They are apparently running a little behind in getting orders processed, but I am hop
