  1. Hi Everyone:

I want to ask does anyone makes a classic mil-dot scope anymore? I'm talking about scopes with reticles that are FFP, and literally have dots instead of hash marks on the crosshairs. I think the dots are simply one mil in diameter.

It seems like everyone makes either plain crosshair or "Christmas tree" reticles now. In my opinion, those Christmas tree reticles are too busy. I don't doubt their accuracy. They're just too busy.

Just wondering. I have an M-40A1 clone project I want to pursue, and it'd be nice to have a classic mil-dot scope for it. I think Leopold used to make one, but I can't find it among their modern offerings.

    Thanks! :-)

  2. Hi Guys:

I'm getting interested in learning to preserve meat. I've purchased a few books, but the focus seems to be on preserving pork. One can learn how to make prosciutto or cure a ham.

I want to learn how to preserve pieces of beef. I assume similar processes can be used (like smoking), but I'd like to have a book focused on beef just to be sure I am doing things right.

It occurred to me our ancestors kept both types of meat around for centuries before refrigerators were invented. I want to learn how. However, like I said, the books I've found on Amazon seem to focus on pork pieces. The only beef preservation method I've done is making jerky. What else is there?

    Thanks!

  3. Hi Guys:

Are there any companies that make direct replacement heavy bull barrels for the Savage 93FV in .22 Magnum? I'm talking about barrels like Green Mountain makes for Ruger 10/22s that are direct replacement bull barrels. However, they apparently don't make direct replacement Savage 93 bull barrels.

I'd like to pursue an idea to take my Savage 93FV's bolt-action receiver and a .920" dia. bull barrel (like for Ruger 10/22s) and put them into a Boyds gunstock. I figure if I could have the barrel tapered a bit in a Boyds "Tacticool" gunstock to make it be a mini M-40A-3.

CZ made a version of the CZ 457 in Boyds "Tacticool" gunstock. That's what I'm imagining, but with a longer and slightly thicker barrel. CZ's has a 16.5" long barrel. I'd like to use a 20" - 22" barrel.

Thank guys. I'd appreciate any help. My gunsmith said to start with a Green Mountain .22 Mag barrel blank would make the costs go up a lot vey quickly. The main issues being it isn't threaded or chambered yet. He mentioned something about it not having a tenon yet either like replacement 10/22 barrels already have.

I just assumed Green Mountain would have Savage direct replacement barrels like they have Ruger 10/22 barrels. It'd just be cool to have a .920" dia. bull barreled .22 Magnum rifle too.

    Thanks! :-)

  4. Hi Guys:

I have an idea for a custom .22 Magnum rifle project. I'll be using my Savage 93FV as a donor gun. I was wondering if anyone like Timney makes triggers for this rifle. Also, does anyone make pillars for the Savage 93 action?

If the answer is "no" to either of these questions, fine.

I'm thinking about getting a Green Mountain .22 Mag barrel turned down to the classic .920" bull barrel diameter, attaching it to my 93's bolt, and putting them into a Boyds "tacticool" gunstock that'll be glass bedded. I'll call it my mini M-40A3. I figure I'll get the barrel cerakoted and given a target crown at the muzzle.

  5. Hello:

I want to ask if anyone knows where I can get a type of axe that's called a "broad axe" or "broadaxe" for a decent price. I'm used to axe prices I see at hardware stores. For some reason, a broad axe is not a type of axe you typically find at a hardware store anymore.

Broad axe prices I've seen on-line are around $200 -$300.

    I'm having serious sticker shock!

  6. Hi Everyone:

Years ago I visited an elderly family friend who was not a shooter or gun collector. This was before I knew guns as well as I do now too. He had worked in some exotic locations during his life like Saudi Arabia. I think he once worked in Germany too because of an antique gun he showed me. He was glad I knew some German and wanted me to translate something on it. It said "Schmidt und Sohne" - Schmidt and Sons.

Am I correct thinking he had something valuable? At the time, I had enough sense to tell him to let someone at a place like Christies appraise it for him if only for insurance purposes.

    Thank you.

  7. Hey Guys:

One of my Dad's Marine Corps buddies submitted this to me. He's wondering what the value might be. I was wondering if you could help take a guess. He didn't have a picture. Sorry.

  8. Hey Guys:

Canik's pistols look pretty good. I'm intrigued by the METE SFX model. It looks like you can get a pistol with a barrel about as long as a Glock34's with 18-20 rounds, but it costs several hundred dollars less. Do any of you own, or have you shot, Canik pistols? I'd like to know what you think of them before getting one.

My situation is I have a Glock 43, but I'd like a big brother for it and use the 43 as a back-up gun. I've been thinking about the Glock 34, but the Canik METE SFX looks like a budget friendly alternative. I think Glock is too proud of their pistols. Thus, their higher prices.

Either way, I wish both companies would make these in O.D. green. That just looks cool.

  9. Hello:

Please pardon my ignorance, but would someone explain to me why everyone seems to be losing their minds over Springfield and CZ (?) making their versions of the Browning Hi-Power pistol? I've heard something about the patent expiring. The excitement is lost on me, but not for any lack of curiosity.

What is the importance of the Browning Hi-Power? Or what is the historical significance of this pistol? Why is it so popular?

To an uniformed layperson like myself, the Hi-Power just looks like a 1911 chambered for 9mm. I'm sure I'm wrong and that there is more to the story.

I mean no disrespect to a John Browning invention. I'm just trying to understand what the excitement is all about. Maybe I'll get one too.

    Thank you.

  10. HI Everyone:

I finally got a custom .308 bolt rifle built. It has a trued/blueprinted Rem 700 action and a Shilen heavy barrel with a 1:12 twist. I figure I better get proper cleaning gear for it before I do sight-in firing.

I basically told my gunsmith to give it a "match" chamber since I'll mostly be firing Federal Gold Medal Match 168 gr. ammo in it. I don't know what he did, but my bolt is VERY smooth.

Anyway ... I don't want to accidentally mess up anything when I clean my rifle. For example: I'll only use nylon brushes.

My question is what is considered a high-quality bore guide and cleaning rod for a custom rifle? I assume Tipton for the cleaning rod, but I really want to make sure my bore guide protects my chamber and centers the cleaning rod.

My rifle is basically an M-40A3 on steroids due to its heavier and longer 26" barrel, and MacMillan A4 stock. Rem 700 SA receiver (blueprinted/trued), Timney 510 wide blade trigger set at 2.5 lbs., Badger .250" recoil lug, bottom metal by someone in Oregon (Pacific Tool and something - forgot full name), AICS 5-round mags, Badger 30 MOA rail, Harris bipod, SWFA fixed 16X mil scope (for simplicity). Things have been bedded and pillared too. Muzzle has what's called a Schraeder crown.

I had many questions about this project that I submitted here on this website. I wholeheartedly thank everyone for your past encouragement and guidance about this project. I'll show its grouping as soon as I get a chance to go to the range. However, I have already achieved my primary goal: having a really cool rifle! It's already received approving nods from members of local law enforcement.

    Thank you!  :-)

  11. Hi Guys:

I am overwhelmed by the number and kinds of boots out there. Now I know how a non-gun person feels when they hear a jillion pistol & rifle calibers spoken about in conversation. Here in Texas, we had a harsh (and rare) winter storm hit us earlier this year. I've never seen single digit temperatures my whole life. My New Balance running shoes were not proper foot wear for snow and ice. I nearly slipped on several ice patches, and the snow soaks your shoes if it's deep enough.

I want to finally get a pair of quality hiking boots or hunting boots that are at least truly waterproof. Both insulated and waterproof with ankle support would be nice.

I am asking for any suggestions since many of you are actual hunters in mountain states. I want to be prepared for another winter storm with proper footwear. I was fine regarding clothes and jackets. However, I simply did not have proper footwear for real winter weather, and it took me aback. I didn't realize how much I took footwear for granted until we had that winter storm. The lack of one simple item nearly "froze" my activities.

Thanks guys. I appreciate any recommendations. I'm sure it's hard to get into a final firing position if your toes are frost-bitten. It's also hard to take the garbage cans to the road too.

  12. Yeah ... I was thinking it might be a collector's item now ever since the import ban. My thinking (and I hope this is sort of right) was to get rifle with AK reliability & toughness, but with the better accuracy of a .223 or 5.56 cartridge.

As far as I know the 7.62x39 round is less accurate. However, I still wouldn't want to get hit by one.

Given my Saiga's possible collector's value, I'm glad I've only taken it to the range about three times and never rapid fired it like I'm a Rambo wannabe. I did, however, buy it knowing it'd be a good battle rifle if stuff ever does get really crazy. The AK is easier to field strip too.

I am just now wanting an AR-15 like a good American. I like PSA's A2 classic with a 20" barrel. BOY! Those sure have gotten expensive!
