  1. I bought a Saiga about 6 or 8 years ago, still haven't fired it. Smoothbore, but I can feel and see that it is choked. Can the barrel be changed out, or do I need to either have a gunsmith bore it out or just sell the gun? I want to shoot slugs.

I just registered and checked the FAQ's, so if this is a noob question, flame away, it keeps me warm. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Tromix is toying with a quick change barrel system but it is, I believe still in development. As such, you should sell Your Saiga 12 to me for what you paid for it and look at something with a quick change barrel system...

Just kidding, what kind of accuracy are you looking to get with slugs? I was knocking 8 inch plates off of posts at 80 yards, Offhand during the Ironman with the cheap Winchester 1600 FPS slugs. Once I get the poly choke on I will sit down and really see what she can do on paper.

P.S. Welcome to the forum by the way.

  2. Here are some pics of a 4 pouch over the shoulder rig I had made. For three gun stuff I plan to simply tuck the flap into the pouch to get quick access to the each mag. I am going to try some of the vest guys flat Molle open top pouches as well.

  3. I am in the process of having some mag pouches made just for 3 gun matches. I will TRY to post some pics tomorrow of a 4 pouch over the shoulder rig that I have and a vertical pouch that is still in the "development phase" as it were.

  4. It is a good addition to the S12. I had my barrel shortened and the Polychoke welded on for an OAL of 18". The adjustability it gives you is sweet.

What length of barrel was yours and did you have to mess with the gas ports? I have a 19 inch that is going to get this exact treatment shortly as I have a Polychoke sitting on the work bench staring at me.

Also where did the actual welds get placed?

  5. I have had the gas plug so gummed up it wouldn't come out. Once I had the plug out I had to use a pick to pull the rest of the carbon out of that area. It was a used shotgun so I don't think the guy before me had cleaned the plug out before. My ports were bad but open. Since that I opened up the ports after trimming the barrel from a 22 down to an 18. I haven't had a lot of carbon built up since then. I guess I'll have to go shoot tomorrow and strip it and look. Do you use a foaming bore scrubber, I usually do and will plug the chamber to get the foam to come out the gas block area, it seems to help.

I don't have a foaming bore scrubber. So far the tetra solvent or "old reliable" Hoppes # 9. I thought about deep creep the end of the second day of the MGM Ironman to get the plug loss and out.

How much did you open your ports with the barrel shortening?

  6. Well In my new quest to keep the Saiga gas system absolutely spotless, I have started cleaning the gas piston area THROUGHLY every time I shoot.

Armed with some tetra solvent and and a 12 gauge brass brush I now scrub the crap out of the piston area.

This last time, while I had everything apart, I became curious about the number of gas ports in my gun. "Does she have 3 or 4 gas ports?" I wondered. Shining a light into the plug opening and looking down the barrel it appeared that I had three. Looking from the top it appeared to be 4...

So I took a dental pick and promptly "popped" a small plug of carbon / lead out of the back port. "HOLY CRAP ! ! ! " I thought that couldn't have been good. Poking around a bit more opened up the the others a bit as well.

So I am off to test fire this afternoon and see how she runs. My question is, has anyone else had their gas ports "plug up" like this?

  7. Wow, I was actually considering buying one of these but now I'm not sure. So the general consensus seems to be that the BP-02 mount causes ejection failures in the S-12? Thats disappointing.

I highly recommend the BP-02 mount--on anything but a S12. Mine is going back on my .223 Saiga now

THANK YOU VERY MUCH for posting the pics I appreciate that. Your EO tech is getting beat up there.

I had planned to mod the BP-02 by cutting the rail down and mounting it INSIDE the two little raised areas, to get the optic that much lower.

WELLLPP back to the drawing board.

  8. So, just got back from the match. I didn't use the BP-02 mount.

    Guess what?

Not one fucking problem! She chugged along all day long and worked great! You're lifesaver SR

Yeah, I guess the BP-02 mount is going back on a regular Kalishnikov.

Good to hear. Our next multigun is the weekend after July 4th. I need to drift the rear sight slightly, but otherwise...irons baby.

Does anyone have any pictures of where on the mount the shells are hitting?

  9. I am about to try out a Leupold Prismatic 1X that I picked up cheap. They have a circle with a dot and crosshairs. I could do with out the cross hairs. My thoughts are sight the dot for slugs and use the circle for Bird shot...

WE will see how it goes.

  10. The AGP Gen 2 magazines can be loaded with full magazines. With practice, I have been under 3 seconds shot to aimed shot. The best I have been with a mag well is 1.99 seconds.

I carry my magazines "shells up", with about half the magazine exposed above the pouch.

Shaving the underside of the bolt "Tromix style" is a must.

An extended magazine release is mandatory.

In the 3 gun matches I shoot, the normal stage has series of arrays, all under ten rounds. I just change magazines after every array.

The drill is: shoot, push extended magazine release (most of the time the magazine still sticks in the gun). At the same time grab the closest mag about half way down. Punch the mag in the gun to clear it from the gun, rock and lock the new mag, Shoot. I like grabbing the magazine half way down its body, because it give me better control.

If you run out of rounds or use the bolt hold open, you are going to lose against good competitors.

What kind of mag pouches are you using?

  11. I wanted to update after range visit and mods on magazines. First, I was intrigued by one member's post on putting a pin in APG 10 rd mags. Even with bolt polishing and some relieving, it was difficult to load full 10 rd magizines with the bolt closed. Until I get a good reliable LRBHO device, I will be shooting 9 and changing magazines on a closed bolt. Here are some pictures of my placement of a pin.Basically, it goes smacl dab in the middle of the top small rectangle formed by the reinforcement ribs:

    Saiga%20Mags%20001%20-%20Copy%20[640x480].JPGSaiga%20Mags%20002%20-%20Copy%20[640x480].JPGSaiga%20Mags%20004%20[640x480].JPG

As you can see, the 9th round is pushed against the pin (pop rivet) and the rivet is across the brass (low brass load) of the round. The next picture shows a 10th round placed on top of the rivet. Saiga%20Mags%20013%20[640x480].JPG

I found out there is just enough tension to lightly hold the round in place. The great thing about this setup is that when you insert the mag into the gun, it goes in with very little effort and as you rotate to lock in place (actually depress the top round slightly) if you have the gun rotated slightly, the pop rivet falls out and all of the shell rotate into their normal position.

On reliability, I shot 4 magazines with a mixed load like shown in the picture in my first post. These were a bunch of odds and ends picked up when I RO'ed the Ft Benning 3 Gun Match. So far, no malfunctions of any kind. 20 from the shoulder and 20 from the hip. I plan on shooting at least another 150 in the next few weeks. I'll keep you posted on results.

AHHHH it'll run perfect for all the practice sessions. Not ONE failure, but I swear Saigas hear the beep of a TIMER and all bets are off......

At the moment I just have a manual bolt hold open and a LRBHO kit still in the bag waiting... In the Recent MGM Ironman, what did was, simply pull the bolt back with my right thumb and lock the bolt open with a push up from my middle finger.

    Then swap mags.

The LRBHO will speed things up by the fact that you won't pull the trigger on and empty chamber, as such you will start the reload that much faster.

In addition to Scaring the Saiga, the Beep of a timer also erases all prior planning for the stage as well. So it is a rare instance when I know for sure I have just expended exactly 10 rounds and make the change. I NEED a LRBHO alas. A mag well wouldn't hurt either.

By the way I like the pop rivet idea ALOT.

  12. All the new guns that I have seen lately just have the thread protector nut. The very first RAA imported guns (17.2" bbl) had a Cylinder choke tube on them.....ie, no choke. I have never seen a gun come from the factory that had a real choke on the barrel, though that doesn't mean it never happened.

Mine is a 19 inch that came through EEA and it did have a choke on it. It is marked horizontally, "KA^ .12" and then on the flat vertically "6(0.0)" any oone know what that is? Also can you buy different chokes?

  13. I would still drill and tap if it were mine. Murphy's law usually only happens at matches, not practice.

    HERE HERE ! ! !

Murphy scrupulously avoids my practice sessions ! ! ! Only to show up to my matches like clock work ! ! ! I hate that guy.

JB weld is a very strong epoxy however I doubt it will stand up to the repeated stress of the 12 gauge for a very long time. Sucks I know.

  14. Any gas piston made in the USA is desirable due to the 922r law. Installing it in your rifle allows you to legally use US made magazines of 11+ capacity.

They all work the same, no matter whose name is on them.

    OHHHH I see.

So there is no great advantage in function to any of them? Wouldn't the stainless be easier to clean?

Also how tight a tolerance is necessary for sealing?

  15. After market gas pistons like the Chaos and the Tromix, what is the advantage to these?

    ALSO

Has anyone lightly polished the surface of the stock version?

    And one more question,

What is the fav carbon solvent for cleaning this area? Hoppes # 9 or something else?

My piston and selector gummed up on me the 2nd of 3 days at the MGM Ironman and I had to break everything down as best I could. I was astounded at how much crap had built up in there from the few hundered rounds of Slugs Buck and bird shot run through it.

  16. I'd love to watch, Parma is about 5 hours away... but I'll have relatives in town at the time.

When they say "This match will beat ya like a Rented Mule..." They ain't kidding. It is tough on competitors and guns. One guy running a Saiga 12 with a Tromix stock had the stock BREAK and it was in a section that was a slug stage and the guy held the gun out in front of himself and kept firing. The broken end came back and split his chin nicely. After which he splinted the stock and applied duct tape and kept going...

Mine lasted till the end of day two before the gas ports were so gummed up I needed help getting the plug out. All in all, a real EYE OPENER. I need to work on the gun, the mags, ME... Once my shoulder turns another color besides BLACK tinged with Blue I will be back at it.
