  1. 1. Define "high level of reliability" - with "what for?" - if you are building for home defense and range plinking - most stock ARs are a good choice with little or no gunsmith skill really.

If you are doing 3 Gun Matches - you go to the range and see what the pros use - basically stock ARs with maybe a trigger group mod, pin retainers, medium to light barrels.

If you are going to be some kind of "operator" you need a IAR/SBR build by the pros that provide weapons to SWAT and LEO - check in with them via google.

    2. Anything you use or build will only be as good as the operator/handler. There are guys I know that can run circles around a group of guys with AR15s - with a bolt action rifle.

If you do not train with your weapon, you do not know it and that makes you unreliable.

    3. "Buy an AK" really? hit anything much beyond 300 meters? lol, the debate over WHAT brand, model, caliber can go on all day long. Its a personal choice, and it might not be an option - you might only find a mosin nagent, mossburg pump, or ..AK. You could buy a PSL!

But if you only shoot it at a DNR range - one shot per minute, 100 yards only, bench - you didn't really need to spend that money did you? A .22 LR Ruger 10/22 would be just fine.

Not trying to insult, but being blunt ; )

  2. I stayed for 1 year before they started the short sale on my house. I made every house payment (9.7% interest, yes I was a sucker) for 3 years until I got sick and lost my job. No refi - it was early 2009 - so they didn't give a shit.

Stay until they post notice on your house, then you have 90 days left.

Once the date expires on the order, I understood they could come in anytime and put my stuff on the curb, no call, and the sheriff will be there.

I made sure I took all the appliances, light fixtures, plumbing and bath fixtures - it makes my small trailer look like home...

  3. it fits on any rail system, so get a quad rail system.

I agree, it does not lend to shoulder fire or aiming down sights, it is a hip mounted - laser or flashlight aim.

If you think about it, a over the shoulder sling would be better as it would hold the weight of the weapon for ya.

It can be a double point sling - not a three point as shown -

  4. just get the UTG Quad rail - $99, comes with short and long rail for you to choose, I use the short top rail, I mount a RDS and it works great.

(also seen here - Mississippi Arms barrel shroud to protect barrel, TapCo stock. SightMark RDS)

You will replace the forearm, it installs like a clam, and all alum. construction. They include rubber grip panels!.

Side rail was such a pain in the ass on a mosin nagent and AK- just did not even bother on the Saiga ...

  5. jdpete if might need fitting - even the instructions inclued with the drum tell you that you might have to shave some plastic off the section that will fit in the rear part of the mag well. Since your saiga 12 cycles ammo in all other means - it sounds like the drum is not fitted and not feeding the shells correctly, tweak it a bit.

  6. My story is similar - it is a great shotgun. I just had to work the MD/ProMag 20 drum - shave a bit of plastic to get it to fit right. I prefer the drum to the longer stick magazines. I upgraded to Tapco collapsible stock (required no fire control group to be moved forward) and UTG quad rail for the forearm - so I now have a pistol grip and adjustable stock, and red dot optic, I can put my flashlight on it for low light. I was just given a MD Arms V-Plug to swap out the original gas plug. I will give it a try as I am trying to get the saiga to work flawlessly - off the shoulder etc. The main thing I understand from talking to a few people - the saiga was supposed to eat anything - the gas regulator was meant to dial it in so it would not beat the shit out of itself, not necessarily make it feed better.

Remember NEVER lube the puck. And buy in bulk ; )

  7. The whole point of not trying to load a full mag with a closed bolt is the issue of damaging the shell where it causes feeding problems. By stuffing the magazine into the shotgun you damage the top shell so it is deformed before you even jack the bolt back and try to get it up the feed ramp and into the chamber while it is out of round shaped. (lets agree - some brands damage more easily - ie - Duplex buckshot - it is not a crimp but a cardboard disk rolled in. Even crimped shells can get damage enough that it is out of round and will not slide up the feed ramp smoothly or fit smoothly in the chamber - requiring the forceful bolt rack and slap to make sure it goes to battery)

That is the reason I don't try to load on a closed bolt. I just make it habit to use the bolt hold open or store it with an open bolt.

  8. All state gov has its nuts - the good news - the illinois AWB looks like it is stalled -

    http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2013-01-04/news/chi-gay-marriage-assault-weapons-ban-votes-delayed-in-illinois-senate-20130103_1_marriage-bill-assault-weapons-gay-marriage

" an effort to ban semi-automatic assault weapons and large-capacity ammunition magazines --- backed by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel --- also lacked the votes needed for passage. Opponents argued the measure was too broad and unworkable."

So hopefully like a lot of government crap - it goes no where.

Or were you upset about the gay marriage thingy lol!

  9. Gun and knife show - Gibraltar Mt Clemens - fear buying and price gouging is the game - MD20's - $250. one guy offered $3000 for my buddy's chromed AK47.

    bulk 556? can't find it.

Soon thieves will target forums like this for robberies.. Setup up your OpSec.

  10. ProMag 20 drums are easy to load - use that cocking lever to move the follower down - you are practically dropping in the 12 ga round one at a time.

I do this while resting the drum on the ground/floor, than on a bench.

Yep - load it with the open bolt - it is easier, faster, and less likely to smush a weak crimped shell.

It depends on you - your arm length etc. I can hold my Saiga fine with a drum. Just take some time to get used to it.

You will eventally get a quad rail for the fore arm (for a center mounted top rail for Red Dot Sight)- and the fastest way to get a pistol grip/collapsable stock/folder - is by TAPCO, or similar - that does not require the trigger group to be moved.

SGammo.com is the place for me too!

  11. point being - should we start buying up more ammo and firearms BEFORE they are banned - with the latest press conference by the president of USA himself crying on TV - yea - I think we might see a ban on magazines, ammunition quanities, and firearm types - it won't matter if a Saiga 12 with detachable magazine was used or not.

  12. Dunham's is selling the QD SightMark RD - this one looks more like the EOD RD/halo sight - normally $120, now $99. I have also tried their $40 RD Sightmark - the back half of the sight is plastic - and broke. The above sight has more metal around it to protect it.

I also use TruGlo RD for the Ar15. In 3 gun matches, the range you are shooting at - these low priced optics are reasonable. I just could not see buying a $500 EOD sight for even competition. For life saving/self defense - you can use iron sights or pop on a more expensive 3-9x50 scope. Iron sights are a must - in case the batteries go or the optic is damaged.

  13. as a NRA RSO for the gun club I go to I got to hear about our AD's. Two ADs were by police officers using the range. One officer was showing off - he ejected a live round from his glock and caught the round in the air. His next action was to put his hand in front of the pistol and pulling the trigger. One AD was a quick draw, and yep - shot himself in the leg. The third was out on the skeet range, fired into the ground a foot away from another man's leg.

during the 3 gun matches - I see people 'panic' under the timer, fumble, and brain fart. The same issues happen when people drive and talk on cellphones - task over-saturation.

  14. Even consider "Knock and announce" - we just had four people killed by a group posing as cops. They laid them all down on the floor aka arrest style - and executed them.

You can't blame me for wanting to be safe and secure in my home - I live in a bad neighborhood. Even if police announce themselves - in the dark, in the early am - anyone busting in my door (after all - I am not a criminal, doper, so why would cops come for me??) I HAVE to go for a weapon. I cannot risk me and my wife being executed for our TV...

Blame the criminals who pose as cops - use the death penalty for anyone posing as a cop during violence crimes.

Police should also STOP performing SWAT style raids for low crimes - SWAT was used when ordinary police methods did not work and officers needed help.

When ordinary police officers grab a level 3 vest and a SBR AR15 and thinks that makes him trained for dynamic entry - goes off to pick up a young adult for a warrant for FTA about some MIP or a little marijuana - that is just a scenario for disaster. Valid police methods are contacting via phone, performing a knock and talk, and the traffic stop. They can always take you back home in handcuffs if they fear your saiga 12 in the closet.

Police deserve respect for their authority and they have every right to be safe in their duty. It is the situation caused by criminals - not innocent people with legally owned firearms in the right to defend their lives and home.

BTW - a tip, I suppose if you barricade your entry doors - it would take time for several things to happen -

    1. SWAT would have to change from stealth/dynamic entry to - barricade suspect - they fail to make entry within a certain safe time. You can announce yourself, and negotiate a safe surrender. "I am ARMED, I am calling the POLICE, STOP!" (avoid "fu*kers Ill blast ya!")

    2. You have more time to wake the heck up, re-assess the situation (is there an Armored MRAAP with police lights and siren, perhaps big letters SHERIFF in your drive way?) You can announce that the police are being called. 911 could clue you in if it is real police or not.

    3. If they are bad guys - they might be deterred - they lost the surprise/shock and awe advantage to their fake raid. They heard you announce that you are calling the police, so bad guys split the scene most ricky tick.

The barricade is a life saver in both respect - if officers are delayed, they would also fall back to re- assess the situation - perhaps slow it down. SWAT does not shoot anyone as they have no one to engage. It prevents you from having to shoot anyone - as no one made entry into your home yet. I know this conversation is off track - from weapons to home defense, so I end this here. ; )

  15. yea I got to watch the reference I use - "molle'' is just short for "plate carrier, molle webbing". In LE - you can have plate carriers with no webbing on them.

yea SAPI and ESAPI I believe are stand alone - steel plates are not, they need the soft armor to catch the round. Cutting cost by buying cheaper steel plates is off set by having to by soft armor to go with it.

I agree with the clutter on the vest - some guys need to put everything they own on their load bearing vest. It will depend on your tactics and activities, if you are vehicle mounted, you have to consider how you will access and move your weapons inside the vehicle. If you are humping, you want to loadout so you don't die from being overweight. If your tactics are fast, you might want to design your load to avoid snags. I just saw some issues with drop legs snagging on brush - try moving through deep brush or even just crawl through it - it can hang up on you. I guess it will just depend on training each person does with it - with the pistol mounted above my AR mag pouches - the mags clear the pistol, and the pistol is where I can keep brush away from it. Oh, and cut off the excess strap on those drop legs, you wont look so newbie ; )
