  1. I saw that, but I was hoping I could find something less than Kvar's 20.99 It looks like there are better deals out there: http://www.russiansurplus.net/product_p/ak74-firing-pins.htm Saiga's are '100 series AK's so much of the parts are based of the '74, and not AKM. I wouldnt really consider SGL's to be conversions, but rather a barreled reciever with US parts bolted on, which is even better. I wasn't sure where my SGL belongs. It still says Saiga on the side so I thought this was a decent place for it. Still not sure where I'll post pics if I decide too... Anyhow,
  2. Hey guys, I would like to buy a replacement firing pin for my SGL 21 as a spare and I'm not sure which one it takes. For those who are unaware, an SGL 21 is an Arsenal Saiga 7.62x39 conversion to regular AK configuration. Most 7.62x39 rifles take a standard firing pin, but that the SGL-21 takes a different sized firing pink than my other 7.62x39. The bolt is a different size as well. I believe the SGL-21 takes an AK 74 firing pin because it's built on a Saiga, but I'm not 100% sure that Saiga's take AK 74 pins as a rule... I believe that 7.62X39 and 5.45X39 Saigas along with
  3. Hey guys, I appreciate the effort to help, but I'm already decided on all aspects of this system aside from the optic mount. If I were going to use the side mount, it would be to attach a scope for 100+ yard shooting. I prefer the ultimak for a red dot, and I don't find the weight of micro series optics to be detrimental to balance. I've considered having a QD red dot for the Ultimak and a side mount illuminated scope so that I could have a choice of optics to switch between, but this gets expensive and would only be practical if both scopes stay sighted in when taken on and off the rifle.
  4. I'm considering optics for one of my rifles and I like forward mounted red dots on the Ultimak rail. I've been looking at the Larue T1 package because it's a highly competitive price for a top quality optic and quick detach mount. The only thing I don't like is that I've read it won't cowitness on my ultimak and some people have had trouble fitting it to the rail. A bit of digging has shown two options, both of which are supposed to provide cowitness and quick detatch from the ultimak: A.R.M.S. 31 https://www.google.com/#psj=1&q=arms+31 Aimpoint 12184 https://www.google.com/#psj
  5. What's the advantage to mounting a red dot rearwards? I've always heard it's better to mount them forward unless there's magnification. The advantages of forward mounting a red dot include wider field of view, less image loss due to the casing of the scope, and faster target acquisition. Red dots allow for shooting with both eyes open and rear mounting them may create a blind spot whereas forward mounting enables complete field of view. Eye relief is one of the major advantages of a red dot, and to fully utilize it wouldn't one want to mount the sight as far forward on the gun as possible?
  6. Cobra,Gunfun, thanks for answering my questions. I think my hammer is just about perfect now.
  7. I took an armorers course with Owen from Snake Hound Machine and have been doing some work on the G2s. The best two pieces of advice I can give are 1. There are lots of tools you can use to shape the hammer, but if you have nothing else you can do wonders with a straight file, and 2. If you're gonna shave the hammer down make sure you have a spare in case you mess one up. I've actually been having a lot of fun doing my own trigger smithing. There's a trick to making the hammer reset incredibly fast/smooth/crisp and I'm curious if the more experienced members here have used it... Q
  8. Tapco warns not to use a G2 in a saiga on their site... *Note: INTRAFUSE G2 Trigger Groups are not compatible with the Saiga platform. INTRAFUSE G2 Trigger Groups are also not compatible with NoDak Spud NDS-3 and NDS-65 "economy" receivers. In some cases, the use of these two products together can create accidental double firing of the firearm. http://www.tapco.com/products/ak/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=57
  9. Why do you care what people on the internet say?
  10. Thank for the input everyone, I got it today... I tried, but be started at $1125 and I came up from $800. It's more than I wanted to spend, but all things considered I think I did all right. As a general rule, if I think I can buy something and easily flip it for more I'll get it regardless of what it is. The SGL definately fits that description in my book, but I don't think I'll be selling it any time soon. I just figure with it being a solidly built AK rifle by reputation, and with the added desirability factor of the Legion marking, I'd regret not getting it while I can.
  11. The other question is whether my money would be better spent on a cheaper AK rifle. In the world of 800 io/century/m+ms (the M+Ms looking like the best of the three from what I've read), would I be just as well purchasing one of them instead. I'd love to have a military surplus rifle, one with a milled receiver, or one built on a Saiga as my shtf weapon, but I'm not sure how much more reliable they would be than any other AK, considering the legendary reliability of the platform. I also still see deals like this: http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&view=product
  12. So I took a Carbine 101 course and I was the only one there running an AK. I started talking to one of my class mates and he told me he's been considering selling his SGL21-61 to put money together so he can get an AK in .308 . A few weeks later we started negotiating and it looks like the magic number is $1000. My question is whether or not it's a good deal. The gun purportedly has less than 500 rounds through it and has an Ultimak top rail on it, but he wants to swap that back to the original gas tube and put the ultimak on his ak 74 before he sells it. The gun has had some work done
  13. Ask him whether they are the 2000 line or the 47c line.
  14. I haven't seen the claim that they bought Polish tooling. I'm not saying they haven't made it, but what I've read is that they invested heavily in tooling (non specified origin) and are now making rifles based off of the Polish blueprints with an experienced supervisor from the Polish factory overseeing the process. I have an AK47c as indicated on the receiver just in front of the magwell, and I'm very happy with it... I believe that the AK47c line may be the US manufactured rifles while the older STG200X rifles are the cannabalized WASRs. Admittedly I'm not sure that all of the above is t
