  1. 'Just got my hands on this RS Regulate AKML mount that I purchased to use on my Tromix S17. As far as I am concerned, This mount is perfection. It can be tensioned to your weapon so that you get a tight fit and you can center the optic over the bore. It puts the optic really low and best of all it allows you to use the lightest and best red dot on the market on your AK/Saiga 12 etc.

I pounded the crap out of it yesterday with a lot of 1600fps slugs and 3" 00buck with zero issues.

  2. I am sitting back with high hopes for this gun. This gun wins on ergonomics but it will be a little while before we hear how reliable they are. Now several months have passed and no horror stories about one exploding.

That said, this thing is a steal when compared to the $1400 guns legion is selling with lrbho and a top rail.

  3. What kind of classes?

There is a law down in this state that prohibits any kind of paramilitary training, FYI....

Was looking at defense pistol/shotgun course. I don't think something like this would run afoul of the law since Massad Ayoob runs a course up in Live Oak.

Yeah....I don't know how "paramilitary" training is illegal here.Hell, the first Magpul Dynamics Carbine DVD was filmed right down the street from here and I know just about everyone in the DVD.There are all sorts of civilian training in this state.

  4. I agree with Jim.What I would like to see is a S12 with all the normal reliability mods(basic conversion and MD/Gunfixr plug)No unnecessary stuff like puck, buffer etc. put up against an Akdal with the basic reliability mods(that shim Tromix makes)and someone get several bricks of Federal 7.5 and Remington 7.5 and start shooting and record the failures.

We all know what the common failures are on S12's and what the typical brands of ammo are they dont like.I would like to see someone with an Akdal shoot the hell out of it and tell us what we can expect from it.

  5. I am assuming you did that SEPSA match that was today.I really wanted to make it but due to my current circumstances I couldn't make it out. Those guys put on a good match.

I have done 3 gun with them before and heard the same comments only to prove them wrong.A few years ago the guys that run that club gave Hobbyshooter and I some grief when they put on a demo at a local range and when they saw we wanted to run their demo course with S12's they claimed they had never seen one run...etc.We ran the demo course probably a dozen times each with no malfunctions.

Sometimes they will do shotgun courses of fire with really high round counts at their matches. It is REALLY fun to see the huge time gaps when you run a mag fed gun with a bunch of guys using tube fed guns manually loading them.

Can you guys who are using your S12's for 3 gun competition post some pics of your set ups. I think Id like to set mine up for this purpose and have some questions and some ideas. Thanks!

  6. I think the Saiga's "track record" isn't a selling point. It seems that for every 1 person I run into that has good things to say about the S12(either in person or on other forums)there are 5 that say all they have ever seen of them is that they constantly have failures.

Either way,I don't see these driving the price of the S12 down.Once these Akdals take off(assuming they do for previously mentioned reasons)I see the opposite happening. It will drive the price of the Akdal up having little effect on the S12 price.

I too want to see these guns have a solid following because I really like the idea of a shotgun with AR ergos,LRBHO and drop free mags. For now,I will wait but time will tell.

  7. I have designed and built two prototypes of AR platformed shotguns in the past three years both ran well and the only component up in the air was the mags.

And I know of several others that have done similar projects.

So USA made guns have and do exist in this configuration.

But....and its a BIG but....people are concerned as to what ATF would decide to do, in regard to it.

Given that two box fed guns are now approved may give rise to American company's bringing them out.

Several years ago at Shot show, CMMG had one, they would not let you touch it....but it was hanging on the wall.

Its not lack of innovation that has prevented it from coming about, its uncertainty on a more political basis.

If and when a more favorable political environment comes about, an AR based shotgun will as well.

Actually I gotta disagree with this.

Sure, we've designed one (several versions, actually) as well, it's not rocket science. The problem is trying to compete price-wise with the Izhmash factory or the Turks.

To build a gun for under $1000 retail? Tough task. You are correct that the mag is the sticking point, just as it is with all gun design and most Tromix unusual builds came about because of serendipitous mag fitment.

I can imagine trying to compete against them would be a tall order considering you would essentially be starting from scratch and well Ismash....not so much.

That said,I think the winning combo for this gun will be the Turk upper and a US made lower that takes common AR parts(hopefully fire control groups too)That would be a game changer.

I cant speculate as to which is "better" since that is subjective. However,if the Akdal is reliable it beats an out of the box S12 on ergonomics alone.Hell,it beats most modified S12's on ergonomics. To me the most important part is going to be reliability.I will look over LRBHO,drop free mags and a top rail all day long if the gun isn't reliable and my S12's have proven to be extremely reliable.

Has anyone put a high round count through these guns?Jasper said earlier he had 300 rounds through his(this isn't a stab at you Jasper)but it isnt uncommon for me to run 300-500 rounds through one of my S12's in a single outing.

No offense taken. I just don't see putting a lot more ammo thru it yet untill I get at least the conversion parts from Firebird. I can practice some then without high caps. That will even help force to practice mag changes. I'm not a rich dude and don't reload shot shells.

For a club shooter like me I don't anticipate shooting over 2K shells from April thru October, if I end up using more it would suprise me. I wish I had the time and $$ but that powerball thing just hasn't worked out. Yet.

Don't get me wrong,I'm not a guy that has tons of money to spend on ammo. The shotguns are the cheapest to shoot guns I own.I bought some affordable steel knock down plates from a seller on ebay, made some stands and shoot steel with cheap walmart Federal #7.5.The range I shoot at allows me to run and gun and shoot the steel. This is also good practice for the few times a year I do 3-gun.

That is why the most important part for me on the Akdal is it needs to be reliable because I won't be interested in it regardless of ego's if it doesn't run well.

  9. First, congrats on a good shoot and coming out alive.

I read this last night and have been thinking about it this morning. Not that it matters now,do you think your cut thumb is what caused the failure?

Also, all this monday morning quarterbacking about gun and caliber is silly. I pocket carry a jframe with speer .38 short barrel in warm weather and carry a m&p compact in a mtac holster in cooler weather and feel that either are sufficient. That said,I personally know someone who shot a guy point blank with a .45 Kimber carry gun(comander size) right next to his nipple(under arm) with corbon DPX and the damn guy walked off until his lung colapsed. Paramedics arrived and the guy lived. This is why most instructors tell you that once shot a bad guy is going to keep on going for a little while unless you put one through their CNS.

Once again, good shoot and it couldnt have turned out better for you.

  10. Glad I saw this post. My wife and I aren't from Jacksonville, or the Southeast for that matter, and haven't been able to find anywhere to shoot my new Saiga 12. It's been a bit of a bummer to say the least.

A couple of weeks ago we drove to the range near Lake City only to have the range Nazi threaten a $500 fine if a shotgun was fired at the range. It was of course completely fine to shoot Casey Anthony photos at the range though.

I shoot Saiga 12s often at Amelia Shotgun Sports (A.S.S. LOL!) in Yulee, FL. I am due for a test and tune soon. PM me if you want to exchange numbers. I may go in the next week or so. We usually throw clays with the hand thrower and chase buckets. It is absolutely a good time.

There is a 3-gun in Fernandina on the last saturday of October.

I have been trying to find out when this event is. It seemed like noone that I knew could give a definitive answer until yesterday when I found out that it is only on the 5th Saturday of months that have one. I will most likely come to the next one and just watch. I'm not very hi-speed, but would like to give it a shot sooner or later. Hopefully it will be cool outside then. The heat has been kicking my old ass :cryss:

You certainly dont have to be high speed. There are a lot of fast guys out there but they allow you to shoot the designated slug targets with your handgun if you choose not to use slugs. That really plays to those of us who use Saigas.Either way,it is a fun, well organized club and you would have fun if you went "slow" and shot it since there are a lot of steels for the shotguns.

  11. Is there a reason that your front sight in post #5 is on correctly but in all the other pics it is on backwards???

No reason. It is just on backwards. :lolol:

I dont use a front post.I just line up the two circles and shoot. To clean the gas system on that gun the rail, muzzle brake and front site post have to come off just to get the gas plug out.

  12. Your searches are probably coming up with nothing because many of the thread titles will be "surefire" mags rather than SGM.

That said,I have no experience with the promag mags.I do have one of their 12 rounds drums and it works well. However, the AGP mags and Surefire mags are good to go.Google AGP arms.I have dozens of mags so I havn't been shopping for any lately but check AGP arms site,Carolina shooters supply and Mississippi Auto Arms to see what they have in stock.
