Recently purchased a 7.62x39 Saiga, reconfigured it to it's original configuration. Put on a hogue pistol grip and a Tapco G2 trigger. Buddy of mine gave me a wood stock and a handguard but he did not have the gas tube cover. I recently got some nice wood for my Norinco SKS but it's got the cheese grater gas tube cover so therefore cannot put the wood cover on it (I personally like the cheese grater anyway. I took my new Saiga 12 (from CenterfireSystems) out to the range for the first time last night and on the 2nd box of shells it locked up non-functional. The bolt hold open tab has either slipped inside the action or dropped off. I cannot see it and the bolt is permanently held open. In this position I cannot disassemble the action either. Centerfire Systems referred me to the importer, which is Russian American Armory. But they are closed today through Tuesday..... Anybody else run into this particular problem?

My Saiga 12 will function just fine with higher pressure shells (factory loaded buckshot or my own higher pressure hand loads) but will not cycle with factory target loads. They just don’t have enough pressure to cycle the gun no matter where the gas plug setting is set on. I have tried opening the port in the gas plug without it making any difference. My next step is to open the gas port in the barrel to let a little more gas into the gas system. I only see one hole to bleed gas into the gas system from the barrel. Any reason why I shouldn’t do it? I'm thinking maybe a 1/8 drill bit….
