Cobra 76 two 2,677
OK I have this sweet new 22" S .308. My plan is to transform it into the 1st VEPR/Saiga/Dragonov or "Vaiganov"...lol. (At leat the 1st one I've ever seen or heard of...) I have this beautiful set of VEPR wood furniture I'm putting on it (thanx dinzag ) once I cut the receiver and make a forearm retainer to accept it. Here's my delemma. I need 5 US parts right? Well the FCG will make 3. What will my other two be? I think I remember Tony posting some pics once of some .308 followers he made. Can these be had? What kind of gas piston will work? Or should I just take the easy way out and make myself some cool floorplates for my 8rd mags and talk Tony out of some of those followers? Yeah I know FBMG has whole mags coming out sometime. Kinda pricey since I missed the group buy by one day... I would prefer to wait til they come down a bit and the factory mags are more suited to the kind of rifle I'm building. Definately better for shooting from the bench or prone. Ideas?

kresk 10,063
Thought I saw a post where someone used a 6.25 inch piston in a .308, assume they swapped it for 922r reasons.

expeditionx 1
thanks Doc You should have 14 foreign original foreign parts (with no pistol grip). The drag/thumbhole stock is only considered one part. Soo, you need 4 original parts to exit the rifle. Trigger group 3 parts. Piston 1 part. Cobra 76 two 2,677
Is that a fact? I've heard all kinds of talk otherwise concerning thumbhole AK stocks like the one that came on my Maadi. I thought the ATF considered a T hole a pistol grip anyway. I thought the ATF considered a T hole a pistol grip anyway. It is a pistol grip as far as importation regulation is concerned, but since its part of the stock and not separate the thumbhole is considered as one foreign part rather than two. I guess I maybe need to dig up some ATF letters.
danny boy 0
So let me get this straight- you're building a Viagranov? Won't it only shoot straight up? Ahem...Sorry. As I understand it, there should be NO problem with parts count as long as the only evil feature you add is the thumbhole stock, as it would still be importable in that configuration. Go sticking a hi cap mag in it or adding a bayonet lug or flash hider and then you have problems. The PSL and WASR low caps are imported with 100% Romanian parts. Your Viagranov would be no different, but a nice adjustable US FCG and a stainless gas piston would be worth the effort anyway. Followers and floorplates would be the easiest way to go. The soupbowl industries letter states that the SAR 8 which I think originally was imported with a thumbhole has both foreign parts 15 and 16 ( thumbhole and pistol grip). That would make the thumbhole as 2 foreign parts. I can not find it,but a letter posted at sksboards stated that a thumbhole was 1 foreign part only. I guess you could write them and have the latest version of their policy regarding this issue.
