skifast 2
I have searched and read through the threads. I was going to get a 308 and do a conversion. I changedmy mind, due to the cost of mags and ammo and have decided to go with the 7.62 x39. I can get either a 20 or 16 inch barrel. From what I have read, the 20 inch increases the velocity and has better powder burn. The 16 is more manuverable. Accuracy is a wash. The weapon is going to be primarily a SHTF gun.I have handguns and shotguns for home defense. What should I do?
moxie1c 3
It is a tough call but let me put it this way. I have a x39 20 inch now and my next conversion will def be on a 16 inch, and I solidified that fact in my head tonight as I was wielding it around working on installing a bullet guide. But, from reading your post it looks like you have the close and intermediate range firearms. A 20 inch couldn't hurt. In my opinion, the 20 inch will be more accurate because of the longer sight radius--From an unsupported standing position mine can consistently hit bowling pins on the 150 yard line! If you plan on using optics then as you said, it is a wash.

b2673ad 0
Hello I have a 20 dont have a problem with it but it is hard to find a case to hold the 20 inch Saiga. I had to get the really long sniper bag from Cheaper than Dirt to hold it.
Dale 0
not trying to pick apart your x39 choice for a SHTF scenario. however i think the .223 for a SHTF scenario would be easier to get rounds for and a hell of a lot more accurate. not to mention around the same cost as a x39. just my .02 Edited July 21, 2008 by Dale
