New Saiga Owner Avoiding Conversion

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I should be getting my Saiga sometime tomorrow, 16" I do believe, from Centerfire Systems.

This forum has been great for my research into Saiga and their products, thanks all, I'm glad to be aboard.

Now, down to business: going through the 7.62 porno post (the picture post) I noticed that before I convert I'd like to see how I enjoy the other options, basically holding onto the trigger back where it is and adding either the ACE folder or Tapco adjustable stock that have the pistol grip attached to the them, or even a stock like Kymasabe's.

Ace/Tapco stocks.

Kymsabe's beauty.

However, I would like to get that classic Ak look with the gas piston which I believe involves changing the upper and lower hangguards yes? As well as a muzzle break (like ste's if you're at all interested), a foreward grip and possibly quad rail, peep sight, and 30rd Saiga mags or US made equivalent.

Where, if anywhere, am I going to have 922 issues? In the porno post there was talk of muzzle breaks making the item non-importable and thus in violation of 922, and I've heard that 30 rd mags will put me in violation. So, what's the scoop?

PS. Kymasabe: I'm also on TFL, and of the nice Saiga's on there, yours was the inspiration that really made me want to get one, I fell in love with it, it looks awesome, good job, take your eyes off of it for a second and I'm taking it.

Update: I've been searching the forums up and down, landed here at the "What's the easiest way to make a Saiga compliant?" That was especially helpful, I think I'm on target when I say:

If I add an ACE/Tapco un-converted stock, I can only use US made mags. And anything else I want to add to my Saiga will have to be US made, rails, fore grip, muzzle break, etc... yes?

And one more thing, do all US mags require that I shave something off the magazine or add a bullet guide or otherwise manipulate something somewhere?

It's not so much what you use that's US made, as it is what you *don't* use that's foreign. Once you change one part, you have to bring the overall part count in line. As far as US made mags, there are some that are made just for the Saiga - no mods necessary, and you get 3 compliance parts. The bullet guide modification is only if you want to use standard AK mags, plenty of which can be found from American manufacturers as well. Mostly a matter of preference in what type of stuff you want to buy and use. Regular mags are plentiful and cheap, but the Saiga-specific ones don't need any modding.

I've heard much of this G2 FCG. I see Dinzag has a FCG for non-pistol grip converted Saigas. Anybody have any opinions on his? I suppose I could just ask him right haha. And can I get the G2 to work in my non-converted? From what I understand, and it's not much, the converted FCGs are a bit shorter since the pistol grip is more forward on the reciever, thus my question.

Oh, by the way, I picked it up lastnight. My heart's a flutter. Field stripped it, ran some Hoppes #9 and lubricant, and some Remoil on the FCG, and then I polished her up stock and all with the Hoppes lube. Oh man, this thing is beautiful. Taking it to the range tonight along with a Chinese mystery SKS I need to test out as well.

Here's my unconverted SHTF gun.

Say, where'd you get that stock?

It's a Russian Saiga sidefolder I bought from David's Collectibles. It's heavy duty, and folds to the left (towards me), instead of to the right, like Tapcos. I took the thing apart, and drilled the pivot hole out a little bigger. It was a big PITA to try to open or close the SOB, until I drilled it out a little bit. It's also a lot quicker to deploy than the Tapco (for me). Has a nice soft rubber buttpad on it. I removed the sling swivel and re-threaded an eye bolt in its place, so it's easier, quicker to connect/dis-connect carabiner on sling, and stronger (won't bend if bungee gets snagged when runnin', hittin', and rollin', like the factory swivel might.

By the way, for those of you wondering, it's my "SHTF" gun only. Before I take it out shooting, I put the skeleton stock back on, and only bring the 10 round mags, muzzle break is welded. I have a new Saiga with all the compliant bells and whistles that I will convert in the near future.

Take care, FFF patriot.
