* Avoid driving in known bad areas, even if you need to take a much longer route - this will reduce your risk more than ANYTHING.

* Avoid alleys, dead-end streets, and confined roads when possible.

* Keep night driving to a minimum, this is when most of the cockroaches come out.

* Always carry a pistol loaded and ready with you, and spare magazines. Make sure the pistol can be loaded, shot, and manipulated with one hand - practice this, as you will probably be shooting with your left hand while driving.

* Stay out of middle lanes during traffic periods, or areas where you can easily be boxed in.

* Leave enough room in front of you to get out if you need to - never tailgate.

* Never get out of the car if things look suspicious or someone challenges you

* Don't hesitate to break the law when you get a bad feeling about something or something bad unfolds;

1) Run the red light or stop sign (carefully) if thugs are hanging out at the corner

2) Run up a curb, on the sidewalk, in the median, or over vegetation if things get ugly

3) SPEED, SPEED, SPEED - pedal to the metal to get away.

4) Ram the car in front, behind, or to the side if that what you need to do to get away.

5) Run people over if they are a threat to your life

* Don't hesitate to shoot through window glass or your own car door

* Do not pull over for an unmarked LE vehicle. Call 911 and tell them that an unmarked is trying to pull you over to find out if it is legitimate. I have fallen victim to this in Mexico and Panama. It happens all the time in the US too! A smart LEO will understand.

* Keep your vehicle in good working order. This includes tires!

* Never get caught trying to get away from another car with an empty tank of gas, never let it get under 1/4 tank.

* Know the capabilities and limitations of your vehicle.

* Practice basic evasion maneuvers (J-turn, 180, high speed backing, cornering, zig-zagging to avoid fire)

* If passengers in the vehicle are not capable of returning fire when the shooting starts, they should be down on the floorboards.

* and here is the big one, BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS. Do not be caught by surprise. You can easily go into la-la land daydreaming about life, while some thug approaches your window unnoticed.

The first and last items will get you out of 99% of bad situations in a car.

also, always move. a moving target is Much harder to hit.

in a situation, find cover or concealment to reload, fire, move, reload.

I agree, however, there are times that you just can't.

For instance, when you're sitting in traffic at a red light.

If you're in a middle lane, you're stuck.

Even if you have your windows rolled up and your doors locked, safety glass is very easy to shatter with the right tool.

They can be IN your car in the blink of an eye.

I consider "red lights" to be one of the most vulnerable places we can be.

Thugs can approach from blind spots and use other cars for cover. They pick the place and the time of the attack. An ambush is simple to set up.

There are numerous ways to protect ourselves, but in the end we're pretty vulnerable in the car, stuck in traffic, at a red light.

I took a police driving course, and have seen some other tactical driving courses offered by some schools, but unfortunately all of them are more law enforcement oriented. Companies like Blackwater have classes for civi contractors in war zones, but this is far too expensive. also REMEMBER that cops, soldiers, and heavily armed contractors DO NOT have to worry about car-jackings and robberies, so even this training will probably not address your needs. I read a great deal of stories about people surviving in bad places or in countries during economic collapses, and have learned a great deal from these folks, like the following;
