BLeeHandy 0
Hello, This is B. Lee Handy, I finally took my new Saiga 7.62 x 39 to the outdoor rifle range today. It fires great. Fairly tight groups at 50 yards without a scope. BUT, I'm getting some misfires. When I compare the fired round shells with the misfired rounds I notice the firing pin is not indenting the misfired rounds as much as the fired rounds. Is anyone familiar with this problem?? Firing Pin Spring?
Sheik Yerbouti 0
My Saiga in 30 Combloc didn't have a firing pin spring. You should probably take the bolt down and pull the firing pin and check for battering on the hammer end. Also, have you re-installed the hammer spring correctly? Is the hammer binding on anything? Did you lube the hammer axle?
BLeeHandy 0
Hey Thanks for the reply, Did I mention the rifle is new, I talked to a gun smith yesterday. He said it doesn't matter if it is new. may need new firing pin. But your options make more sense, cause you don't want my business. I haven't taken anything apart yet. maybe factory used too much oil, etc I'll clean it up and have another go at it. By the way is the hammer spring the firing pin spring? Sheik Yerbouti 0
Except on certain Chinese models, I have never seen an AK with a firing pin spring. That doesn't mean that other models don't have them, but I am pretty sure that Russian AKs have never had them. Saigas have the small shaft bolts which have no room for a firing pin spring. If your gun needs a new firing pin, I would order one from TAPCO for $4.00. They are extremely easy to install once you remove the bolt from the carrier. If your problem is not the firing pin, then at least you will have a spare. Another thing that occurred to me is that the magazine may be a trifle too high and be retarding the return of the bolt, causing it to be ever so slightly out of battery. This is rare, but it does happen. One way to tell is to single feed the rounds by hand without a magazine in place. Retract the bolt, apply the hold open feature, load the round, and let the bolt slam forward under the recoil spring power.
BLeeHandy 0
Thanks Sheik, those are great suggestions. I did field strip my Saiga today, so now I can see what you mean in all you said. That hammer spring looks complicated, I'll leave that part for the gunsmith. but the firing pin should be easy to replace. Sounds like a good way to test loading by hand, to see about the misfire. So that firing pin from Tapco for a regular AK47 will probably be an exact fit for my Saiga 7.62 right? Thanks again Bleehandy
Sheik Yerbouti 0
So that firing pin from Tapco for a regular AK47 willprobably be an exact fit for my Saiga 7.62 right? AFAIK, there is only one length of AK firing pin, so yes, the TAPCO offering should fit. Other places that carry AK parts are Global Trades Poly Technologies Centerfire Systems RPB Industries K-Var Dragunov Parts Edited November 30, 2003 by Sheik Yerbouti
