Darth AkSarBen 20
An AK-47 is 7.62 X 39mm Soviet An AK-74 is 5.45 X 39mm Soviet An AK-101/AK-102 is 5.45 X 45 NATO Where does the 7.62 X 51mm NATO (.308 Winchester) fit into this? On Gunbroker I have seen a Yugo AK-47 in 7,62 X 51 for $2,000 starting and buy it now was something like $2950.00 Are the the 7.62 X 51 actually known in the AK world as an AK-47? nalioth 405
No communist military has ever issued an AK in 7.62x51. Therefore, no "official designation". Zastava exported a commercial AK in .308 through the Mitchell company a couple of decades back.

On Gunbroker I have seen a Yugo AK-47 in 7,62 X 51 for $2,000 starting and buy it now was something like $2950.00 It's actual designation is "Zastava M-76", just like the PSL is a PSL, though both are based on the AK action. The x51N variant of the M76 is the export version, at home they use(d) the 8mm (there's also the M91 in x54R). I believe the original Mitchell rifles (8mm & x51N) are not marked M76. As Joe said in the info of the auction, in order to get around import restrictions they were relabeled "M90". Most of the confusion results from the ignorance/intentional deception of sellers (calling the PSL a 'Dragunov', for instance). Are the the 7.62 X 51 actually known in the AK world as an AK-47? In the "AK World", only the AK-47 Type 1,2, or 3, is an AK-47. Then there's the AKS, AKM, AKMS, 74, 101, 103/104, and 107/108. And those are just the Russian military variants! Here's a good basic family history on the Russian AK variants. The rifles are colloquially known as "AK-47s", but almost all that I can think of have specific designations from their country of origin.
Darth AkSarBen 20
Well, just for information, this link shows an AK-47, not a scratched out and remarked M90 being sold: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=138211253 What year did they start making the Saiga in 7.62 X 51? Maybe give it a new "American" designation of like AK-?? (date of first manufacture) or AK-308? Almost looks like a "third" rivet there near the front of the magazine latch. A Saiga could be pretty much converted to look a LOT like this one on auction without near as much cost. Only would be a "Saiga" and not one from Yugoslavia. nalioth 405
It doesn't matter what's stamped on it - it's a commercial product.
Lysander 0
It doesn't matter what's stamped on it - it's a commercial product. Yup. A lot of these stampings are changed to get around import bans and all the fun requirements we in the land of "Shall not be infringed" have to do in order to remain within the "Sporting Clause" of the 2nd Amendment. Look at the PSL for example they get stamped as PSL, FPK, or SSG-2000.
