KC913 324
Anytime I've painted a steel mag I just wipe it down with some de-greaser or alcohol based parts cleaner and scuff it up with a steel wood pad so the primer will stick. Apply primer in a couple light coats, let dry, apply paint in a few light coats. Painted a few of my mags just so they would perfectly match the 7.62 that I painted. csspecs 1,987
The finish on them is likely a phosphate coating or some other industrial grade finish. Bare metal does not hold paint very well, you will have the best luck going over whatever is already there. You will want to degrease very well, denatured alcohol is what I would use after using a degreaser to get the residue off.
