Your bound book could be just about anything purpose built for A&D or just a notebook with all the information written therein. Midway sells a "Firearms Collectors Logbook". Brownells sells a "Firearms Record Book". I just had Kinkos print me 10 spiral-bound pages of the sample bound book page from SurplusRifle.com.

A "composition notebook" is just fine for this use, use google image search if you don't know what I'm talking about. Really, any notebook that doesn't have removable pages. If you mess up on a page, put a line through it and continue, don't rip it out.
