Kellyc2215 3
Question for you guys that roll your own. What and from whom cast Bullets do you use? Also whats a good powder to use? I figure a good cast bullet for a hog should work just as well on a white tail deer. Looking for similar results as a 3030 ish type load. I am just learning about hand loading and starting to collect some equipment. Tried my hand at some .38 special. Not very good results yet but I will learn. psl sniper 963
i dont recomend cast bullets in a semi auto. as the soft lead will foul the gas port after a time. for bolt actions its fine. also unless your doing some hardcasting you will find your bullet velocity wil be lower. your best bet for a 7.62x39 would be a 150 gr soft point. I reload my 300 winmag,308 and 30-06, don't see why you need to reload 7.62X39 ,it cheep and if you want better performance, get thous fancy Brown,Golden,Silver Bears and as PSL says don't go heavier than 150g.I hunt hogs with "wolf" ammo 60 to 100 yards you wont have a problem to get medium size hog 90-200 lb, if you do your part But if you want to play with it try this. http://www.alliantpowder.com/reloaders/RecipeList.aspx?gtypeid=2 Edited June 23, 2011 by atakacorp
psl sniper 963
you could work up some nice handloads for it. my point was i just dont think exposed lead in a gas operated semi is a good idea. personally i like the wolf 154 gr soft points. i still have a nice case them left.
Scott Kenny 144
You can run heavier than 150gr in a x39, I have seen a couple factory loads for them with 160-200gr slugs. It's the PSL that doesn't like anything over 150gr. I also wouldn't run lead in a semi-auto. Save that for either a revolver or that Quigley rifle you wanted. I'd buy some 130gr Hornady SSTs, personally. They have an excellent reputation and are good fliers.
