Ok, I have read several threads on here about the mag catch, which I am currently working on. I filed down the top of the mag catch to the point where the military mag will catch, but the mag catch lever is straight up and down, if that makes sense. In other words, it is not returning to the position it is in without a mag in the well. The lip of the mag is angled, and I am trying to figure out if I need to file a tad more off. I don't want the catch to engage all the way to the bottom of the lip near the mag, just because I know it will loosen over time. Should I file it until the edge of the mag catch is about half way engage on the lip of the mag? Just need some advice. Like a wise poster once said, I can't put the metal back on.

Thanks.

The metal can be put back on, with a welder.

The mag catch will never be at the same angle as when there is no magazine in place. The tab should rest pretty much all the way into the corner of the magazine lug tho, for the most secure retention.

Grab the mag catch tab and work it in and out while the magazine is inserted in the mag well. This will help "wear" the catch down some.

Short strokes with a file and repeatedly checking clearance after every few, will ensure a good, tight, proper fit. Keep filing just dont get overzealous.

If you fuck it up, it just means its time to replace with an extended release or a surplus part. No big deal.
